Abstract

This research focused on analysing the derivational process of suffixation found in the novel entitled “Confessions of a Shopaholic.” Observation and qualitative method were applied in this study. Observation method used in collecting the data. The steps of colleting the data were first, reading the novel carefully, second finding and listing all complex words that contains derivational suffixes, then identifying and classifying the derivational suffixes. Meanwhile, qualitative method used to analysing the data. There were two steps in analysing the data, namely identifying and describing the data by using some words and presented by using tree diagram. This research used theory from Plag (2002) and supported by theory from McCharty (2002). The result of this research shows that there are some derivational suffixes found in the data source. They are suffixes –ment, -ion/-ation, -er/or, -ance, -ist, -ism, -ing, -hood, -ity, -(e)ry, -ant, -ful, -ship, -ize, -able/-ible, -less, -al/-ial/-ual, -ive/-ative, -ish, -ic, -ary, -ous, ed, and –ly. These suffixes are divided into four classes of suffixation namely, noun maker, verb maker, adjective maker and adverb maker.

Abstract

Abstract Feminism is manifested worldwide and it is represented by various institutions committed to activity on behalf of women's rights and interests. This study used maleficent 2 mistress of evil movie by Robert Stromberg. In this movie there is nine main character there are Maleficent, Aurora, Prince Phillip, Diaval, Queen Ingrith, King John, Conall, and Borra. This study has two aims: (1) to identify the types of feminism depicted in the movie through the main characters, and (2) to analyze how the characters died fighting for their rights. The study was based on Tong's (1998) theory, and the data has been collected by watching the movie repeatedly. To observe the main characters' conversation, a descriptive study and textual analysis have been used. According to the findings of this study, liberal feminism is the most often portrayed type of feminism. The main characters in the story struggled to gain independence and their rights. Maleficent and Aurora were successful in uniting two kingdoms and bringing the moors and people together in peace and happiness. This study used the documentation method to collect the data and the method used in analyzing data was qualitative.

Abstract

This study concerned with the code switching phenomenon involving Indonesian-English found in Pamungkas’ speech during podcast talks or interviews. The study aims to analyze the reasons and classify the most and least type of the code switching by Pamungkas as the interviewees in the four podcast episodes on Spotify. Quantitative and qualitative method were used in this study. The data were analyzed according to theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) about seven reasons of code switching. The result of this study showed there are 78 code switching and all reasons from the theory were found. Based on the finding, expressing group identity was the dominant reason with 28 (35,89%) data, followed by 22 (28,21%) data of talking about particular topic, 11 (14,11%) data of interjection, 7 (8,97%) data of being emphatic about something, 6 (7,70%) data of repetition used for clarification, and 3 (3,84%) data of quoting somebody else. Meanwhile, intention of clarifying the speech content for interlocutor was only represented by 1 (1,28%) data, found in those four podcast episodes uttered by Pamungkas as the interviewees.

Abstract

This study discusses the persuasive language used in the advertisements of Frankie magazine. Persuasive language is a language used for when someone wants to influence others people to do or believe something. The aim of this study is focused to analyse the types of persuasive technique found in advertisement of Frankie magazine. The data of this study was analysed in descriptive qualitative method. This study applied the theory based on the Keraf (2007) to analysing the types of persuasive technique. There are seven types of persuasive technique by Keraf (2007) namely: rationalization, identification, suggestion, conformity, compensation, displacement and projection. The result of this study found three persuasive techniques from the six advertisements of Frankie magazine, those are compensation technique, suggestion technique, identification technique. The most dominant types of persuasive technique were found in advertisements of Frankie magazine, they are; suggestion is 3 (50%) data and identification is 2 (33.3%) data. The lowest dominant data of compensation technique is 1 (16.6%) data. The used types of persuasive technique in advertisements of Frankie magazine is one of the technique to help communicates the message and the content in the advertisements to the reader.

Abstract

Code switching occurs when the bilingual or multilingual people shift the code from one to another code in conversation. The aimed of this study is focused to analyse the types of code switching found in Algoritme Rasa Novel. Descriptive Qualitative method was applied in analysing the data. This study applied the theory Bilingualism by Poplack in Romaine (1995) to analysing the types of Code switching. Those are three types of Code Switching: Tag Switching, Inter-Sentential Switching, Intra-Sentential switching. The result of this study showed that all the three types of Code Switching were found on Algoritme Rasa Novel. The most dominant of the types of Code switching occurrence in Algoritme Rasa Novel is Intra-Sentential switching with 58 data meanwhile, Tag Switching be the lowest dominant data used by speaker with 23 data.

Abstract

Abstract This article discusses about the meaning of figurative language found in John Legend’ album entitled “Love in the Future”. The objectives of this research were to find out types of figurative language and their meanings in John Legend’s song lyrics. The article, entitled “The Meaning of Figurative Language Found in John Legend’s album entitled “Love in the Future”.To analyze the data, the main theory used in this article is first theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) entitledInterpreting Literature and the second the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) entitled Semantics. This article analyzed the data descriptively by using qualitative method. Thecollected data by browsing and downloading song lyrics from the internet, reading and understanding song lyrics and taking note and classifying the phrase and sentences that contain of figurative language. The data is taken from John Legend’s album entitled “Love in the Future” released in 2013.Type ofmeaning figurative language found in John Legend albumentitled “Love in the Future”are connotative meaning and conceptual meaning. Connotative meaning is the dominant type of meaning found in John Legend’s album.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the politeness strategy applied in the expressive utterances produced by the characters in Land before Time XIV movie. The data of this study is taken from the movie upload in Daily Motion website and movie script download from Fandon website. This study uses two theories, first from Brown and Levinson (1987) about politeness strategy to discover what types of politeness strategy that occurs on the expressive utterances in the movie. Second theory from Searle (1969) about the expressive function to find out what kind of expressive function found in the utterances. In this research, the method used to analyzed the data is qualitative research method. The result of this study found all the types of politeness strategy are applied in the utterances produced by the characters. Besides, all the characters are expressing some function of speech, there are showing regret, showing acceptance, appreciation, praising, condoling, complaining, and criticizing.

Abstract

Abstract When it comes to translation there are several things that need to be considered by translator such as the equivalence of messages, grammatical structures and culture value between two languages. Hence why, this is the reason to raise this topic as a study because English is not a native language of Indonesian. This study was focused on to find out the translation strategies which used in English-Indonesian signages at Bali Zoo which located at Gianyar Regency, Bali Province. The translation strategies theory which proposed by Newmark (1988) was used in order to answer the problem of this study. The qualitative method was used in this study. The result showed that there are 5 types of translation strategies can be found based on 22 data which are 7 literal translation (31.81%), 2 faithful translation (9.09%), 2 semantics translation (9.09%), 7 free translation (31.81%) and 4 communicative translation (18.18%). It can be indicated that literal and free translation are the most dominant translation strategies that had been found with each of 7 data. Then followed by communicative translation by 4 data, faithful and semantics translation with each of 2 data. Keywords: translation strategy, signage, bali zoo.

Abstract

Nowadays in daily life, people often use words to communicate with each other. The people interaction will produce a sound as an imitation of certain objects. These words and sounds are onomatopoeia. This study expects to an investigationof one types of primary onomatopoeia, from a Nursery Rhymes by Dave and Ava on YouTube. This study used the theoryproposed by Ullmann (1962:84) to identify the types of primary onomatopoeia and, the second theory of meaning is lexical meaning was analyzing by using theory of Lyon (1995:47) and contextual meaning used theory proposed by Ullmann (1962:64). The data of this study were analyzed descriptively. Observation method and note taking technique were used in collecting the data of this study. The findings presented by using the formal and informal methods. The result of this study shows that there are 12 data belong to primary onomatopoeia. Furthermore, from the two types of meaning, the lexicalmeaning become the dominant meaning of the primary onomatopoeia.

Abstract

This article discusses the hyperbole figure used in used in the song lyrics of Lewis Capaldi’s album entitled Divinely Uninspired to Hellish Extent. The author thoughts hyperbole is used create strong feelings in the mind of the listener by comparing an emotion to an object, experience, or event, or a songwriter might also use hyperbole to create vivid images in the mind of a listener. The article, entitled “An Analysis of Hyperbole in Album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent”, aims to identify the types and find the meaning of the hyperbola language in the song. To analyze the data, the main theory used in this article is the figurative language theory proposed by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963), the theory of meaning proposed by Leech (1981) and some of another supporting theory. This article uses qualitative methods to provide a clear picture of the problems identified. Descriptive study in textual analysis is applied to describe the types and meanings of hyperbolic figures in the song lyric. The data is taken from Lewis Capaldi’s album entitled Divinely Uninspired to Hellish Extent released in 2019.
