Abstract

Language is very important for every people, by using language people can communicate with each other in daily life. There are a lot of studies that discuss language and one of them is swear words. Swear words is a word or phrase that's generally considered blasphemous, vulgar, or otherwise offensive. These are also called bad words, obscenities, expletives, dirty words, profanities. The act of using a swear word is known as swearing. It can be divided into six types; Excretion, Death, Body Function Term, Religious Matter, Mother in Law and Sex Term. The article entitled "Analysis of the Types and Functions of Swear Words Used in the PewDiePie video, aims to identify the types of swearing in the PewDiePie video entitled" This is Bad. To analyze the data, the main theory used in this article is the theory of swear words proposed by Wardhaugh. This research used a descriptive qualitative method to present the data descriptively and qualitatively to support the data found in PewDiePie video. The results of the research on cursing found four types of curses, namely the term excretion, the term gender, the term body function, and the term death. In addition, the swear word function used in PewDiePie videos is primarily to express resentment, anger, and contempt for an object or subject while playing a game.

Abstract

This study analyzed the types of subordinate clause in complex sentence found in The Boscombe Valley Short Story and the constituent structure of the subordinate clause. There are 21 data of complex sentences found in the The Boscombe Valley. The finding shows that there are three types of subordinate clause, which is the clause most frequently used is relative clause with 9 data or 43% of the total data it uses who, whose, that, and which as complementizer then followed by complement clause with 7 data or 33% of the total data which used that as complementizer and the least frequently clause is adverbial clause with 5 data or 24% of the total data it uses if and when as complemenntizer. And then the analysis of the constituent structure the researcher found that complement clause is marked when the verb (V) in main clause equals with the subordinate clause, it means this clause modifies the verb of main clause. While in relative clause when the Noun (N) in noun phrase equals with subordinate clause that means the clause modifies the noun. And adverbial clause is when the subordinate clause has modifies a whole clause or the whole sentence.

Abstract

In order to analyze further regarding to the phenomenon of flouting maxim in conversation, this study is concerned to describe the types of conversational maxim flouted by the main characters in Green Book movie through the theory of Cooperative Principle (Grice, 1975). In conducting this study, the descriptive qualitative approach is used to analyze the data. The study has found that all types of conversational maxim are flouted by the main characters in the movie, with the flouting maxim of quantity as the most dominant type in which as many as 31 (38,75%) occurences, followed by the flouting maxim of relation with 28 (35%) occurences. As for the lower ranks in the number of occurences consist of the flouting maxim of quality with 12 (15%) occurences and finally, the flouting maxim of manner with 9 (11,25%) occurences as the least dominant type of flouting maxim found in the movie. Abstract

This study is concerned with finding the types of grammatical cohesion used in “The Yak” Magazine and the function of grammatical cohesion used in “The Yak” Magazine. This study applied the theory from Halliday and Hasan (1976) to find out the types of grammatical cohesion. and theory context of situation from Halliday and Hasan (1989) to investigate the function of grammatical cohesion and supported theory from Renkema (2018). The data were collected by observation method and analyzed by descriptive qualitative method. This finding is presented in a formal and informal ways. The finding shows that there are two types of grammatical cohesion used in “The Yak” Magazine They are reference and conjunction. They are two types of reference found in “The Yak” Magazine such as personal reference and demonstrative reference. For conjunction, they are four types of a conjunction such as; additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, temporal conjunction, and causal conjunction. Additive conjunction is the types of grammatical cohesion which is the most use within the articles with the number of occurrences are 137 items (51 %), followed by personal reference 76 items (28 %), demonstrative reference 25 items (9 %), causal conjunction 17 items (6%), adversative conjunction 7 items (3%), and the last temporal conjunction 7 items (3%).

Abstract

This research pays special attention to the character analysis in the novel Pride and Prejudice, especially the two main characters, namely Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy. In accordance with theories explaining types of character and characterization, the data were carefully analyzed. The analysis focuses on how the characterization of Pride and Prejudice’s two main characters is realized. The aim of this research is to explore characterization of the main characters that is expected to contribute to the study of literature, particularly the existence of characters in the novel. Qualitative method was applied in the analysis. There were two main characters involved in the story, and many data were found to support the analysis of their characterization. Dialogues and narration in the novel were used to introduce the characterization based on three dimensions of characterization. This study found that three dimensions of characterization, including psychological, sociological, and physiological aspects of characterization could be used to make complete and vivid description of the main characters to share the values and message of the story.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study deals with the types of illocutionary act in Hillary Clinton’s speech “American for Marriage Equality” at Human Right Campaign. This study aims to describe the types as well as the function of illocutionary act used in Hillary Clinton’s speech. The descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data in this study. The data are presented descriptively because it was described and explain illocutionary acts found in Hillary Clinton speech. The data were collected by found out the video and the script of the speech, watching the video and reading the script repeatedly then underline and quote the data which are related to the theory. The writer used Searle’s theory for the types of illocutionary acts which is divided into 5 types namely assertive, directive, commisive, expressive, and declaration. And used the theory proposed by Leech’s for the function of illocutionary acts which is divided into 4 categories they are competitive, convivial, collaborative, conflictive. The writer formulated research questions are: 1.What are the types of illocutionary act found in Hillary Clinton’s speech “American for Marriage Equality” at Human Right Campaign? 2. What are the functions of illocutionary acts used in Hillary Clinton’s speech” at Human Right Campaign?. Data source of this study were taken from Hillary Clinton’s speech text “American for Marriage Equality” at Human Right Campaign. Generally, the result of this study shows that this speech text is analyzed in four types of illocutionary act: assertive 5 data (45,45%), directive 3 data (27,27%), commisive 1 data 9,10%), and expressive 2 data (18,18%). And the function of illocutionary act the writer found convivial 3 data (75%) and collaborative 1 data (25%). Key words: speech act, illocutionary acts, speech Abstrak Penelitian ini membahas tentang macam-macam tindak ilokusi dan fungsi tindak ilokusi dalam pidato Hillary Clinton “American for Marriage Equality” at Human Right Campaign. Masalah penelitian ada dua yaitu 1. Apa saja jenis tindak ilokusi yang terdapat dalam pidato Hillary Clinton? 2. Apa saja fungsi dari tindak ilokusi yang digunakan dalam pidato Hillary Clinton? Adapun metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian adalah metode kualitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan cara mencari video dan naskah pidato, menonton video dan membaca naskah berulang kali, menggaris bawahi dan mengutip data yang berhubungan dengan teori. Secara umum, hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa teks pidato ini dianalisis dalam empat jenis tindak ilokusi yaitu assertive 5 data (45,45%), directive 3 data (27,27%), commisive 1 data 9,10%), and expressive 2 data (18,18%). Abstract

The situation in which people involved in a conversation failed to obey the maxims is known as the non-observance maxims. This research focuses on finding the types of non-observance maxims performed by the main character during the conversation in the Knives Out movie. The theory from Grice (1975), supported by Thomas (1995), applied to find out the types of non-observance maxims. The data of this research were collected by using the document analysis method and analysed by combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The finding presents that there are three types of non-observance maxims performed by the main character in the Knives Out movie. It consists of flouting maxim of relevance (50%), violating maxim of quality (37,5%), and violating maxim of relevance (12,5%). The finding explains that the main character in the Knives Out movie tend to break the maxim by giving an irrelevant answer compared to the topic of discussion. Abstract

AbstractThere are many patterns used in song lyrics. This patterns support each other to make the song deeply meaningful when the listener listen the song. This study is about the basic sentence of S-V-C pattern found in Adele Album Song Lyrics especially in 21st Album. It aims to find out the types of basic sentence patterns and the most occurring type of basic sentence pattern which found in this song lyrics. Based on the theory from Quirk et al (1973) and supported with the theory from Brown and Miller (1991). The study found that subject and verb, subject verb and complement, subject verb and adverbial, subject verb and object, subject verb object and complement, subject verb object and adverbial, and subject verb object and object found in this song lyrics. The result of this study are total 63 lyrics found as the data. And it shows that found 9 basic sentence (14%) of S-V pattern, 16 basic sentence (25%) of S-V-C pattern, 13 basic sentence (21%) of S-V-A pattern, 13 basic sentence (21%) of S-V-O pattern, 4 basic sentence (6%) of S-V-O-C pattern, 7 basic sentence (11%) of S-V-O-A pattern, 1 basic sentence (2%) of S-V-O-O pattern. Abstract

In semantics, there are five important parts and one of those parts is figurative language. Figurative language is the use of words that makes the readers have to make a good interpretation not only by seeing what the words refer to or what it is said on the text, but also by interpreting it from the context. According to Anderson (2005:4), Figurative language is language used in an imaginative way; different from the usual or basic meaning. The aim of this study is to find out the types of figurative language in the song lyrics of Miley Cyrus’s “Breakout” album. The data were collected by listening to the song repeatedly so that they can understand the meaning of the song especially on the figurative language, searching the lyric on the internet or watching lyric video from YouTube, reading the lyrics while listen to the song, classifying the words, phrases, and sentences of the song lyric that contain of figurative language. Furthermore, in this study the writer used qualitative descriptive method. The data were also analysed by tabulating the data. The result of this study is presented in the form of sentences. The writer analysed the songs by reading them intensively. Afterwards, the writer examined the types of figurative language of the song lyrics. After analyzing the sentence in the song lyrics, the writer found two types of figurative languages that are used in the song lyrics; they are hyperbole and metaphor. The most dominant of figurative language used is hyperbole.

Abstract

The title of this thesis is The Analysis of Ellipsis Sentence in the Greatest Showman Movie Script. There are two problems of the study in this thesis solved which are, what are the types of ellipsis are found in The Greatest Showman movie script, and how are the syntactical structure of ellipsis found un The Greatest Showman movie script. The data source of this thesis was taken from The Greatest Showman movie script. The theory that used in this thesis proposed by (Halliday & Hassan, 1976) to solve the first problem about types of ellipsis and the second theory proposed by Brown and Miller (1991) to solve the second problem about the syntactic structure. The data in this thesis were collected by using observation method. In order to analyze the data, the writer used qualitative and descriptive methods. The method that applied in presenting the data is formal and informal methods. The result of this study is found one (1) data Nominal Ellipsis, one (1) Verbal Ellipsis and fourteen (14) Clausal Ellipsis.
