Abstract

This study is aimed to find out the types of figurative language in Passenger’s song lyric in Runaway album, and to analyze the meaning of figurative language in Passenger’s song lyric in Runaway album. The writer used the theory from Arp & Perrine (1991) to identify the types of figurative language and the theory from Leech (1981) to analyze the meaning of figurative language. The result of this study showed that are 6 types of figurative language found in Passenger’s song lyric in Runaway album. There is personification, metaphor, imagery, simile, symbol, and overstatement. The writer found simile is 9 data or 30%, the second types of figurative language is metaphor with total of number 6 data or 20%, imagery category with 3 data or 10%, there is also personification with 4 data or 13.3%, symbol category with 4 data or 13.3%, and the last on is overstatement with 4 data or 13.3%.

Abstract

AbstractFigurative language is a language that is used by figures of speech to convey the message or meaning to someone by spoken or written language. Figurative language is generally used in a poetry, song, novel or film. The objectives of this study are to find out types and meaning of figurative language in Jason Derulo song lyrics. There are two theories that used in this study. First, theory by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1974) is used to find out types of figurative languages in Jason Derulo song lyrics. Second, theory by Leech (1981) to find out the meaning of figurative languages in Jason Derulo song lyrics. The writer collected the data by listening the songs, reading the scripts, underling and classifying the lyrics, and taking note of figurative language. The writer analyzed the data descriptively by using qualitative method. There are six types of figurative language found in Jason Derulo song lyrics, they are hyperbole (15), simile (5), paradox (2), personification (2), irony (2), synechdoche (1). The writer found that Hyperbole is the most dominant type of figurative languages used in Jason Derulo song lyrics. Keywords: figurative language, meaning of figurative language.

Abstract

This research is entitled Deixis found in Joe Biden’s inauguration speech. The aims are to identify deixis types and their functions. The data were collected through the observation method that was done by the note-taking technique. The concept of deixis proposed by Levinson was used to support the data analysis, as well as the qualitative method was used to analyse the selected data into their types of deixis and continued by identifying its functions in the grammatical constituent and the relational information in social deixis. Then, the data analysis was presented using the informal method. The result of the analysis shows that there are five categories of deixis found in Joe Biden's inaugural speech, involving person deixis, place deixis, time deixis, discourse deixis, and social deixis. The functions of each deixis type can be seen in the person deixis which has the function in the form of a personal pronoun. Place deixis has the function of a locative adverb and the adverbial of time is used to express temporal deixis in the speech. Discourse deixis takes the shape of the object of demonstrative pronoun, while social deixis takes the form of relational information to identify a person's authority.

Abstract

In an advertisement there must be some verbal and visual signs are used. The signs also have certain meaning to deliver the message of the product or service.The study was conducted by observation method in order to obtain detail information. The method that used in analyzing this study is descriptive qualitative method. The analysis used the theory proposed by Saussure (1983:65) to analyze and described verbal and visual signs and to analyze the meaning of verbal and visual signs of the advertisements used theory from Barthes (1967) about the denotative and connotative meaning supported by theory of color by Wierzbicka (1996). Through the analysis the researcher found there are 72 data of verbal and visual signs divided into 38 connotative meanings and 34 denotative meanings. The denotative meaning in this research consists of the name of products, ingredients, also functions of each product. In the other hand, the connotative meaning consists of the statement in the advertisement, the color, the background,and also the model used in each advertisement that has hidden meaning.

Abstract

This study is aimed to classify a text into four types of grammatical cohesion and to explain the conditions concerning each of their occurrences in the text. It uses the theory by Halliday and Hasan about cohesion (1976) as its main theory. The data of this study, which is the text of a novel, was collected by using documentation method. Then, the data analysis was conducted using qualitative method. Finally, the data analysis was presented using an informal method in the form of descriptions and explanations based on the four types of grammatical cohesion. The analysis results show the classifications of all the four types of grammatical cohesion along with each of their sub-categories found in the data. Additionally, it also includes the explanations concerning the occurrences of those types of grammatical cohesion within the data.

Abstract

This research deals with the translation method of noun phrase found in Everything, Everything novel by Nichola Yoon into Indonesian. This study aims to identify translation methods of noun phrases. The data were taken from Everything, Everything novel by Nichola Yoon. Theory of translation method by Newmark (1988) is used to analyze the data found. Descriptive qualitative method is used to analyze the translation methods of noun phrases. As the result, all the eight types of translation methods of noun phrases are found with total of the data are 776 data which is percentage were 70 data (9.0%) for Word-For- Word Translation, 139 data (17,9%) for Literal Translation, 516 data (66,5%) for Faithful Translation, 1 data (0,1%) for Semantic Translation, 1 data (0,1%) for Adaptation translation, 46 data (5,9%) for Free Translation, 2 data (0,2%) for Idiomatic Translation, and 1 data (0,1) for Communicative translation.

Abstract

This research mainly aims at finding out the types and describing the meaning of compound words found in the novel The Land of Stories The Wishing Spell by Chris Colfer. This novel consists of 438 pages with 24 chapters. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research to analyze the data. This research used the theory from McCarthy (2002) and Ullman (1972). The result of this research shows there are three types of compound words found, namely; compound noun, compound adjective, and compound verb with 106 total data found. Meanwhile, there are two kinds of meaning found, those are transparent and opaque meaning.

Abstract

Sociolinguistics is the study of language related with social conditions, which is related to the general function of language as a means of communication. This study concern on the slang word found in Megan Thee Stallion song lyrics on Tina Snow album. The aims of this study are to find out the types of slang words and the process of creating slang words found in Megan Thee Stallion song lyrics on Tina Snow album. This study chose Tina Snow album by Megan Thee Stallion as data source. There were two theories used in analyzing the data, first the theory proposed by Kipfer and Chapman (2007: 8) to analyse the types of slang word, and to analyse the word formation process of creating slang word used theory by Mattielo (2008: 72-154). In analysing the data, this study used descriptive qualitative method. The result of this study shows that there are two types of slang found in Tina snow album by Megan Thee Stallion song lyrics namely, primary slang and secondary slang. In the types of slang this study found primary slang and secondary slang. In the word formation process of creating slang word, this study found 5 types from 15 types of word formation process, there are: compounding, reduplicatives, acronyms and initialisms, blending, clipping.

Abstract

This research is aimed to solve the research problems. The first problem is aimed to classify the sorts of code-switching observed in Nofitah official's Instagram, and the second is aimed to analyze the reason why the speaker code-switch her utterances. The research used a descriptive qualitative method. In order to identify the code-switching, this research utilized theories proposed by Appel and Muysken (1987) to classify the types of code-switching and also the theory proposed by Hoffman (1991) to describe the reasons for code-switching The end result of this research indicates that all types of code-switching and five reasons for code-switching were found. The dominant type that occurred in this research is inter-sentential switching. It happens due to the fact that Nofitah looks extra blissful when using words, clauses, and phrases in a sentence to convey a motivational message. Five reasons for code-switching were found. The most dominant cause is the intention of clarifying the speech content for the interlocutor. This happened because Nofitah felt free and was freer to disclose what she felt in a language that was not her daily language.

Abstract

The study concern with the use of code switching found in Podcast Ruang Sandi YouTube channel by Sandiaga Uno and Cinta Laura. This study aims to investigate the types and the reasons of code switching found in the podcast. The data in the study were analyzed by applying descriptive qualitative method based on the theory of Hoffman (1991) in solving the first problem, and theory from Grosjean (1982) to solve the second problem which also supported by using the theory of Gumperz (1982) regarding speech function of code switching. Based on the result of the findings, inter-sentential switches appeared as the most dominant occurrence, because Sandiaga Uno and Cinta Laura feel easier and more comfortable to convey their message in full sentence in English. Meanwhile, regarding the reasons of code switching, fill a linguistics need lexical item, set phrase, discourse maker or sentence filler came out as dominant reasons, because they cannot find the appropriate words and also the foreign elements are more understood by the viewers of Podcast Ruang Sandi.
