Abstract

This study aims to analyze the strategies implemented by the Environmental Awareness Student Association in fostering environmentally responsible character among students at Universitas Sunan Giri Surabaya. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach within the framework of Participatory Action Research (PAR), as character formation requires active involvement between researchers and organizational members in planning, implementing, observing, and reflecting on each action. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation consisting of photos, activity notes, and environmental program archives. The data were analyzed through stages of reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, following the continuous PAR cycle. The results indicate that the strategies for developing environmentally responsible character are carried out through several approaches: (1) strengthening solidarity among members; (2) modeling environmentally responsible behavior; (3) providing systematic education on the importance of environmental stewardship; and (4) organizing work programs focused on environmental care. The findings also show that the cognitive aspect of members improved through scheduled educational activities, although the modeling aspect in daily practice particularly within the secretariat remained less optimal. Meanwhile, members demonstrated strong motivation during field programs and outdoor activities. Overall, the study emphasizes that sustainable strategies based on PAR can effectively support the development of environmentally responsible character when reinforced by consistent exemplary practices and a supportive organizational environment.

Abstract

Optimizing community participation in cleaning activities is an important step to create a healthy, comfortable, and sustainable environment. This research aims to understand how communities engage in cleanliness activities, the factors that affect their level of involvement, as well as the strategies that can be applied to improve the effectiveness of community-based cleanliness programs. This study was conducted through literature studies from various journals and previous research that discussed community empowerment, environmental care behavior, and waste management. The results of the analysis showed that community participation was influenced by environmental awareness, local support and leadership, quality of communication between residents, availability of supporting facilities, and consistency of program implementation. In addition, collaboration between local governments, educational institutions, and local communities also strengthens the success of cleaning activities. These findings emphasize the importance of careful planning, clear division of roles, and the implementation of an asset-based community approach to Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) to encourage active engagement and sustainability of environmental programs.

Abstract

This community service program aims to empower the people of Blang Baro Village, Teunom District, Aceh Jaya Regency, through training in the production of banana croquettes as a creative MSME product. This activity was motivated by the limited diversification of MSME products and the low added value of local commodities, particularly bananas. The community service method uses a participatory approach that actively involves the community from planning to evaluation, including socialization, production training, packaging assistance, and introduction to marketing strategies. The concrete outputs of this program include: 1) ready-to-sell banana croquettes with hygiene standards; 2) attractive packaging design; 3) the formation of a new MSME group consisting of 20 women from the Family Welfare Movement (PKK); and 4) a 40% increase in participants' knowledge scores based on pre- and post-tests. The results of the activity indicate an increase in participants' skills in processing bananas into marketable products and an increase in entrepreneurial motivation. This program contributes to strengthening the village's creative economy and provides an alternative source of income for the community.

Abstract

Economic empowerment of rural communities is an important approach in encouraging increased welfare and household independence. Kutambelin Village in Naman Teran District, Karo Regency, has sufficient human resource potential, especially among housewives, but this has not been balanced with sustainable productive economic activities. This Community Service Program (KKN) was carried out with the aim of equipping the community with practical skills through assistance in producing laundry soap as an alternative home business. The method used in this activity is a community-based research approach with a qualitative descriptive design that includes initial observation, program socialization, practice-based training in soap making, and simple assistance related to packaging and the economic value of the product, which was attended by 27 PKK mothers and the Kutambelin Village community. The results of the activity showed an increase in community understanding and skills in the process of making laundry soap, accompanied by a change in mindset towards business opportunities based on daily needs, where the implementation of soap making became an attraction in itself to make and market it, because it is easy and the ingredients are easy to obtain. The resulting soap products can be used for household needs and have the potential to be developed as a micro-scale business. Thus, this activity demonstrates that mentoring simple skills can be an effective strategy in supporting community economic empowerment.

Abstract

Waste management remains a serious environmental challenge in various regions, including Jagabaya Village, Lebak Regency. Low public awareness of waste sorting at the source and suboptimal waste bank management have led to increased waste generation, which impacts the environment and health. This community service activity aims to increase public knowledge, awareness, and participation in waste sorting and waste bank management. The implementation method uses an educational and participatory Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, through a series of outreach, training, and mentoring. The activity involves village officials and the community as the primary subjects in formulating waste management problems and solutions according to the local context. The results of the activity show a significant increase in community understanding of waste types, their impacts, and the benefits of waste sorting and waste banks. There has also been increased active participation in sorting practices and a shared commitment between the community and the village government for sustainable waste management. Abstract

Environmental cleanliness is a crucial factor in creating a healthy and sustainable quality of life. However, low public awareness of maintaining cleanliness requires an empowerment approach based on local potential. This community service activity involved 82 students who actively participated in raising public awareness through the application of the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) method. This method emphasizes mapping and utilizing local potential as a basis for developing sustainable environmental behavior. Through the process of identifying assets, developing community skills, and collaborating with local institutions and associations, students were able to create educational and participatory interactions in efforts to maintain cleanliness. The results of the activity showed an increase in environmental cleanliness and a strengthening of community social capital, marked by increased collaboration between residents, students, and educational institutions. It was concluded that student empowerment through the ABCD approach was effective in raising public awareness of environmental cleanliness and has the potential to be developed sustainably with the support of educational institutions and local governments.
