Abstract

This research evaluated the Effect of Hydraulic Residence Time and Organic Loading Rate in a Microalgal Membrane Bioreactor for Wastewater Treatment. One method of treating industrial wastewater combines an anoxic procedure with a Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR). In this study, process engineering is combined with microalgae to boost dissolved oxygen levels and counteract the rise in sludge. This study combines process engineering with microalgae to mitigate growing sludge and enhance wastewater quality as measured by dissolved oxygen levels. MLSS 1000 mg/L, Chlorella vulgaris microalgae 106 L, and 1.75 kg of urea and TSP were the microalgae concentrations utilized. The quality of industrial wastewater is positively impacted by adding microalgae in the MBBR process. The quality of industrial wastewater is positively affected by adding microalgae in the MBBR process. Adding microalgae caused the dissolved oxygen level to rise over the minimal threshold. Additionally, when wastewater is being treated, microalgae might lessen the chance of increasing sludge in the MBBR.

Abstract

One of the sugar industries produces large quantities of bagasse ash. Sugarcane bagasse ash in the sugar industry cannot yet be utilized. Sugarcane bagasse ash has a relatively high silica content, namely 68.5%, which can be used as a substitute material to reduce the use of cement in making paving blocks. In this research, concrete bricks were made using the manual pressing method. Paving blocks are made from sand, cement, bagasse ash, stone ash, and water. The cement, stone ash, and sand ratio is 1:2:6, with variations in bagasse ash of 10, 20, and 30% of the sand composition. The test results showed that the highest quality concrete bricks were on the 7th day of drying, with 214 kg/cm2, getting quality B based on SNI 03-0691-1996, and the compressive strength of the resulting concrete bricks would increase as the drying time increased. This innovation can improve the usability of bagasse ash and become a new business opportunity for the sugar industry.

Abstract

Banana peel contains starch, protein, fat, total fiber, unsaturated fatty acids, pectin, amino acids, polyphenols, and micronutrients. Horn banana peel has many benefits, namely, it can be processed into a natural antioxidant material that can minimize banana skin waste. The banana peel extraction method used is Ultrasound Assisted Extraction. Ultrasound-assisted extraction at optimal conditions produces good levels of total polyphenols with a short extraction time. In the use of ultrasonic no additional chemicals or other materials are needed. This study aims to determine the effect of extraction time (10, 20, 30 minutes), extraction temperature (20, 30, 40 ℃), and solvent ratio (gr/mL) (1:25, 1:30, 1:35) on polyphenols. The Design Expert V13 program with Response Surface Methodology (RSM) Box-Behnken Design (BBD) was used to determine the combination of extraction parameters that lead to optimal results for total polyphenol content. Based on the research that has been done, it can be stated that the extraction parameters affect the total polyphenol content. The highest total polyphenol content was 61,007 mg GAE/g sample with the extraction conditions at an extraction temperature of 30℃, an extraction time of 30 minutes, and a ratio of banana peel powder to a dissolution of 1:30 g/mL.

Abstract

Dragon fruit skin contains 26.4587 mg/L anthocyanins. Anthocyanins have benefits such as natural coloring agents in the food sector and are used as an alternative to synthetic dyes which are of course also safer for health. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of extraction variables (time, solvent concentration, and particle size) on the anthocyanin content of dragon fruit skin from the extraction results with the Solvent Extraction method. The definition of Solvent Extraction is the separation of materials from a solid or liquid with the help of a solvent. The extraction process starts from the agglomeration of the extract with the solvent then contact occurs between the material and the solvent so that on the flat plane of the interface of the extraction material and the solvent there is mass deposition by diffusion. The extraction process starts with 25 grams of dragon fruit peel powder with a variety of particle sizes (30, 60, and 80 mesh) then put into an Erlenmeyer tube. Then, the citric acid solution with various concentrations (0.1 M; 0.2 M; and 0.3 M) was added as much as 250 ml. After that, the Erlenmeyer was placed on a stirrer to stir for (90, 120, and 150 minutes). After that, the extraction results were filtered using filter paper to produce a filtrate. Then the filtrate was precipitated to obtain anthocyanin extract. After that, it was analyzed using the spectrophotometric method to calculate anthocyanin content. In this study, the best results were obtained at 11.439 mg/L in conditions without repetition. The optimum conditions of extraction were obtained at a particle size of 60 mesh, a time of 150 minutes, and a solvent concentration of 0.5 M citric acid.
