Abstract

ABSTRACT This study attempts to increase students™ vocabulary achievement by using flash cards. The objective of the study is to investigate whether the using of flash card can improve students™ vocabulary achievement. This study conduct by applying Classroom Action Research which was carried out in two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study of SD Negeri 174559 Siraituruk, Porsea which consisted of 34 students. For collecting data, the instruments used were quantitative (vocabulary test) and qualitative data (interview sheet, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the data, it was found that the mean of the second cycle (80, 44) is higher than the mean of first cycle (64, 85) and pre-test (44, 41).  Based on interview sheet, observation sheet and diary notes, it was found thee students were more active and more enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. It was concluded that teaching vocabulary by using  flash cards can improve the students™ vocabulary achievement.   Keywords : Flash Cards, Vocabulary, Action Research

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study concerns with improvement of students™ achievement in writing recount text through mind mapping technique in Junior High School. The subject of the study was the students in SMP Free Methodist 1 Medan, class VIII-1 which consisted of 37 students. This study was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research. The procedure of this research was done in two cycles in six meeting. The mean of students™ score in test I was 67.24. It was increased in test II to 72.78 and in test III, it became 78.79. The improvement was not only showed in the mean of the students™ score but also in the number of students who got point up to 75. In test I, the number of students who got point up to 75 was only 5.4%. In test II, the number was increased to 29.8% while in test III it became 81.1%. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet and questionnaire sheet, it was found that the students gave good responds in the teaching and learning process. Based on the result of quantitative and qualitative data, it can be concluded that the application of mind mapping technique had improved the junior high school students™ achievement in writing recount text.   Keywords: Writing, Recount Text, Mind Mapping, Junior High School

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research concerned on Improving Students™ Achievement in Writing Recount Text by Using Transitions “ Actions “ Details (TAD) Strategy. In this research, the writer conducted classroom action research. The subject of this research were the second year students of SMP Swasta Immanuel, Medan, class VIII-A which consisted of 36 students. This research was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle was organized in four steps, namely Planning, Action, Observation, and Reflection. Cycle II was the improvement of Cycle I. There are two kinds of data collected during the research, qualitative and quantitative data. The instruments for the quantitative data was writing test while the qualitative data was gathered through Observation Sheet, Interview Sheet and Diary Notes. Findings showed that students™ score improved from Test I to Test III. Based on the data analysis, Students™ mean in Test I was 44.33, in Test II was 61.13, and Test III was 82.66. The conclusion is that the Transitions “ Actions “ Details (TAD) Strategy can improve students™ achievement in writing recount text. Keywords: TAD Strategy, Writing, Recount

Abstract

ABSTRACT This study focuses on the improvement of students™ reading comprehension achievement in narrative text through Experience-Text-Relationship (ETR) Method. This study deals with   classroom action research which was done in 6 meetings. The subject of this study was the second grade of SMP N 41 Medan, class VIII5. One class is totally taken as the subject of this study. The number of the sample is 34 students. The data of this study were obtained from the reading test, observation sheet, and diary notes. Based on the analysis data, it was found that the students™ achievement improved from the orientation test, test cycle I, and test cycle II. The findings of this study indicated that Experience- Text- Relationship (ETR) Method improved the students™ reading comprehension achievement. The students™ mean scores showed significant improvement, the mean of Cycle I = 64, 38 and the mean of Cycle II = 77, 20. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study concerns on improving the students™ ability in writing recount text by applying jigsaw technique. The underlying objective of this study is to investigate whether teaching recount by applying Jigsaw Technique potentially improves students™ skill. The research was conducted by using Classroom Action Research (CAR). The population was the 2011-2012 eight grade students of SMP Negeri 1 H.Perak. The number of students was 36, consisting of females and males. The procedure of the research was administrated into two cycles where each cycle consisted of four meetings. Each meeting included four steps namely: planning, action, observation, and reflection. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was the writing of recount test while the qualitative data were gathered by using interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the data analysis, the mean of students™ score in Test I was 28.75; for the Test II was 63.88, and for the Test III was 75.83. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested in the applying of Jigsaw Technique. The conclusion is that the application of Jigsaw Technique in writing recount text improves the students™ ability in writing recounts. Abstract

AbstractThis research concerns on improving students™ speaking skill in expressingoffering by using role play technique. The objective was to find out theimprovement of students™ speaking skill in expressing offering. This research wasconducted by using action research method. The subject of the research was Xcstudents of SMA Negeri 1 Stabat. The numbers of students were thirty sixstudents. They were taught speaking skill in expressing offering by using role playtechnique. The instruments used were the examples of conversation, diary notes,interview sheets, questionnare and observation sheets. In analyzing data, the meanof students™ score for the first competency test was 59,5, for the secondcompetency test was 69,4 and for the third competency test was 77,7. Theconclusion is that by using role play technique can improve the students™ speakingskill in expressing offering. It is suggested that teachers to use role play as one ofstrategy to improve students™ speaking skill in expressing offering.Key words: Speaking Skill, Expressing Offering, Role Play Technique

Abstract

Abstract The objective of this research was to discover whether the application of Concept Attainment Model could in Grade VIII students. It was conducted by applying CAR (Classroom Action Research). The subject of this study was Grade VIII B Private Junior High School (Sekolah Menengah Pertama : SMP) Swasta Prayatna Medan which consisted of 38 students. The instruments used were quantitative data (vocabulary test) and qualitative data (diary notes, interview, and observation). Based on the data analysis, it was found that the students™ score improved; it can be seen from the score in pre-test, post “test in Cycle I and post-test in Cycle II. In the orientation test, the mean of the students™ score was 59.3, in the post-test of the Cycle I was 69.5, and the mean of the students™ score of the last pos-test was 79.2. Based on the diary notes, interview, and observation, it shows that the expression and excitement of the students were also improved. It was found that teaching of vocabulary through Concept Attainment Model could improve students™ vocabulary achievement. It is suggested that English teachers apply this Concept Attainment Model as one of the alternative strategies in teaching vocabulary. Abstract

ABSTRACT This study was focused to improve students™ achievement in writing narrative text by using Think Pair Share Strategy. It was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research with two cycles and six meetings. The subject of this study is Grade X Students of SMA PAB 1 MEDAN ESTATE and consisted of 28 students. The instruments for collecting data used writing test for quantitative and used diary notes, observation sheet and interview sheet for qualitative data. The mean of the test shows the improvement of the students™ score from the first test to the third test. The mean of the students™ score for orientation test was (76,7), the mean in cycle I test was (78,3), and the mean in the cycle II test was (79,4). Based on the data above, it can be concluded that Think Pair Share Strategy is significantly improved students™ writing achievement especially in narrative text.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study was attempted to discover the improvement studentsŸ vocabulary mastery by using realia for elementary studentsŸ Grade IV. The objective of this study was to find out whether realia can significantly improve studentsŸ vocabulary or not. In this study, the writer was conducted by Applying Classroom Research. The subject of this study was one class of the grade IV studentsŸ of SD Negeri 060811 Medan which consisted of 36 studentsŸ. The quantitative data were taken from vocabulary test as the instrument to find out the studentsŸ score. The qualitative data taken from diary notes and observation sheet describe the improvement of the studentsŸ vocabulary mastery of the studentsŸ vocabulary mastery was mostly improved in every test. The range of improvement of the first test and the last test was 83,33%. The observation sheet and the diary notes showed that the studentsŸ were interested in the teaching learning process. These finding show that there was an improvement on the studentsŸ vocabulary through realia that was supported by the result, the mean score of the second test (64,44) was better than mean score of first test (39,17), and the mean score of the third test (78,05) was better than the mean score of the second test. This implies that realia can be an alternative strategy in improving studentsŸ vocabulary mastery. It is suggested that realia to be used in teaching vocabulary especially to young learners.Keywords: Vocabulary Mastery, Realia Media, Procedure of Teaching Vocabulary.

Abstract

AbstractThis study deals with the improvement of the students™ achievement in writing descriptive text through quantum learning. This study was conducted by using action research at second year of SMP N 1 Kabanjahe. The sample of this study was just one class namely: VIII-2. The number of this class was 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles. Cycle 1 consisted of three meetings and cycle 2 consisted of two meetings. There were two kinds of data collected during the study, qualitative and quantitative data. The instrument for collecting the quantitative data was writing test while the quantitative data were gathered through interview, diary notes and observation sheet. Based on the writing test result, the students score kept improving in every test. In pre test, the mean score was 52, 61. In the test of cycle I, the mean score was 63 and the mean score in test of cycle II was 80. The conclusion is that quantum learning can improve the students™ descriptive writing achievement.Key words: Students™ Achievement, Writing, Descriptive text, Quantum Learning
