Abstract

ABSTRACT This research attempts to improve students™ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text by using Dictogloss Technique. The result showed the improvement of students™ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text. It was found that the mean of the students™ scores in every test was improved. In the first test, the mean was 38.7 and there was 2.3% of the students who got up 75 points (Minimum Completeness Criteria), in the second test, it was 65.1 and 19.04% of the students who got up 75 points, and in the last one, the mean was 79.4 and there was 73.8% of the students who got up 75 points. The students felt enthusiastic, enjoyable, and active in teaching learning process through Dictogloss Technique. The result of the research showed the progress of achievement scores, it can be concluded that Dictogloss Technique gives contribution to improve students™ achievement in writing hortatory exposition text. Abstract

ABSTRACTThis research concerns on improving students™ achievement in speaking by using short movie media. The objective was to find out the improvement of students™ achievement in speaking. This research was conducted by using action research method. The subject of the research was XI IPA-1 students of SMA Negeri 8 Medan. The numbers of students were sixteen students. They were taught speaking by using short movie media. The instruments used were diary notes, interview sheets, and observation sheets. In analyzing data, the mean of students™ score for the first competency test was 42,5 for the second competency test was 61,25 and for the third competency test was 85 and the total percentage of improvement from the first competency test to the third competency test was 68,75%. The conclusion is that students™ achievement in speaking can be improved by using short movie media. It is suggested that teachers should apply short movie media as one of media to improve students™ speaking achievement.Key Words: Students™ achievement, Speaking, Short Movie Media

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study deals with the application of synectics model to improve students™ speaking ability in senior high school. This reserach was conducted by applying Classroom Action Research with two cycles in six meetings. The subject of this study was a class in the second year students of SMA SWASTA NURUL HASANAH. There were 24 students that participated in this research. The The qualitative data were taken from the diary notes, interview sheet, observation sheet, and questionnaire sheet and the quantitative data was taken from the test result and done in a pre test and the two test. The result of of the quantitative data indicate that the score of the students imroved from cycle I to cycle II with a pre-test mean of 45.20, the test of cycle I was 46.79 and the test of cycle II was 77.83. The result of based on the data above, it can be concluded that the application of synectics model was significantly improved students™ speaking ability.Key words: Speaking, Synectics, test, data.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study was intended to describe levels of formality used by Obama and SBY in their interviews. This study was carried out with descriptive research. The data were collected with documentary technique and the instrument used was documentary sheet. The data were analyzed by descriptive comparative. The result of the research show that Obama tends to use Casual level (44,78%), Formal (29,05%), Consultative (26%), and Intimate (0,17%) while SBY tends to use Formal level (49,20%), Frozen (3,16%), Consultative (34%) and Casual (13,83%). So, in speaking Obama is more friendly because sometimes he did a joke and laugh while SBY is more serious to answer or to response the interviewerŸs questions. It is hoped that the result of this study is useful to everyone who wants to study about levels of formality.Key words : Levels of Formality, Obama™s Interview, SBY™s Interview.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to discover the effect of applying Four Square Graphic Organizeron students™ achievement in writing descriptive text. It was conducted by usingexperimental research design. The population of this research was the seventh(VII) grade students of SMP Sultan Iskandar Muda Medan with four parallelclasses. The samples of the research were two classes divided into two groups,experimental and control group which were chosen by using random samplingtechnique. Fifty students were taken as the samples. The experimental group wastaught by using Four Square Graphic Organizer, while the control group wastaught by using freewriting technique. The instrument for collecting the data was awriting test. Pearson Product Moment formula was applied to obtain the reliabilityof the test. Based on the calculation, it shows that the reliability of the test was0,84 categorized as high reliability. Then, after analyzing the data, it was foundthat the value of tobserved was 3,66 with the degree of freedom (df)=48 at the levelof significance p(0,05) = 2,01. It means that tobserved is higher than ttable (3,66 >2,01). The result of this study shows that Four Square Graphic Organizer has asignificant effect on students™ achievement in writing descriptive text.Keywords: writing, descriptive text, Four Square Graphic Organizer,experimental research

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims at finding out whether the application of Word Walls strategy significantly improves the students™ vocabulary achievement. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was VII-5 class SMP Negeri 1 Pagar Merbau which consisted of 25 students. The research was conducted in two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. The result showed that the improvement of the students™ scores from the first test in orientation test to the third test in cycle-II test. In the first test in orientation test, the mean was 48.48, in the second test in cycle-I test, the mean was 63.68, and the third test in cycle-II test, it was improved to be 79.04. Based on the diary notes, observation sheet, and questionnaire, it was found that the teaching learning activities ran well. Students were active and enthusiastic during the teaching learning process in the second cycle than the first one. The result of the researcher showed that the use of word walls strategy significantly improved students™ vocabulary.Keywords: Vocabulary, Action Research, Word Walls Strategy,

Abstract

Abstract The objective of this research is to improve students™ comprehension in reading report text by using context clues technique. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class IX “ 1 in SMPN 1 Binjai which consisted of 23 students. The research covered two cycles and each cycle consisted of three meetings. Based on multiple choice test results, students™ scores kept improving in every test. The mean score of the first meeting test in first cycle was 60.87, the mean score of the third meeting test in first cycle was 74.35, and the mean score of the third meeting test in second cycle was 94.35. Based on dairy notes, observation sheet, questionnaire sheets and interview record, it was found that the quality of teaching-learning process ran well and influenced students™ courage and understanding in reading. Students were active and interested in learning process. They confidently figured out meanings of words and sentences by themselves through thinking process in order to gain comprehension. The research result showed that using Context Clues Technique could improve students™ comprehension in reading report text. Keywords: Comprehension, Reading, Report, Context Clues Technique

Abstract

AbstractThis research aims at improving students™ achievement in oral descriptive text usingvideo by conducting a classroom action research (CAR). The subjects were Grade X,students of State Senior High School (Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri: SMAN) 17Medan, the total number of the students was 39 students. The research was carriedout in two cycles with three meetings in each cycle. There were two kinds of datacollected during the research, quantitative and qualitative data. The instruments forcollecting the quantitative data were spoken tests, while for qualitative data, gatheredthrough observation sheet, interview, questionnaire, and diary notes. Based on thedata analyses, the mean of the students™ score in the orientation test was 53.9, inCycle I was 65.09, and in Cycle II was 75.34. Based on the mean scores, it can beconcluded that the students™ speaking achievement in oral descriptive text by usingvideo showed a significant improvement from 53.9 to 75.34. Therefore, it issuggested that teachers should try to use varieties of presentations in uplifting thestudents™ achievement in speaking.Keywords: Speaking, Students™ Achievement, Oral Descriptive Text, Video

Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study aims at improving students™ achievement in writing descriptive paragraph by using Movie Posters. This study was conducted by using classroom action research. The subject of the research was class X SMA Negeri I Galang, which consist of 36 students. The research was conducted in two cycles which cycle I and cycle II consist of 3 meetings. The instruments for collecting data were qualitative (interview, diary notes, and observation sheet) and quantitative data(writing test). Based on the data analysis, the mean of students™ score in Test I was 56,38 ; for the Test II was 68,05 , and for the Test III was 85. The qualitative data showed that the students were interested by using Movie Posters. The conclusion is that by using Movie Posters improves the students™ achievement in writing descriptive. Abstract

AbstractThis study deals with the improvement of the students™ achievement in writing recounttext using sequence of pictures. This study was conducted by using action research atsecond year of SMP N 1 Kualuh Selatan. The sample of this study was just one classnamely: VIII-1. The number of this class was 35 students. This study was conducted intwo cycles and every cycle consisted three meetings. To collect the data, the instrumentsof data were used, writing test (quantitative data) and diary notes, interview sheet andobservation sheet (qualitative data). In analyzing data, the mean of the students™ scorefor the first competency test was 60,9, for the second competency test was 69,3, and forthe third competency test was 80,0 and total percentage of improvement from the firstcompetency to the third competency test was 85,72%. The conclusion is that usingsequence of pictures can improve the students™ writing achievement in recount text. It issuggested that English teacher should apply sequence of pictures as one of media toimprove students™ writing achievement in recount text.Key words: Students™ achievement, Writing, Recount text, Sequence of Pictures
