Democracy and capitalism is regarded as the final system of economic and political systems. All people don’t accept the democracy as the best final political system, including among Muslims. This study intends to look at the compatibility of democracy and Islam by Khaled Abou El Fadl’s view. This library research found that according to El Fadl, a consistent practice of Islam should be brought to the practice of democratic politics, any institutional system that is used. The basic values of democracy, namely respect for difference, actually contained in the Qur'an, and even the early generations of Islam had been implemented well. Abstract

This article highlights the personalization of politicians and howthe roles of  political parties start waning in terms of democratization in Indonesia. In this context, the media, including local media, play a central role. Based on the analysis of the media, the agenda of media is often prepared on the interests of capital’s owner as the party who posses power. On the contrary, public agenda which emergesbased on public’s feed back, in which it should theoretically affect the agenda of the media, tends to be neglected. The neglection of the public agenda cannot be separated from the shift of the meaning of the media in the modern era which tends to run a market-driven journalism. The system of political competition in both local and national legislativeand presidentialelections has brought merely about implications of personal characterization, comparingto the substantial role of political parties. In this context, the role of local media as a platform of candidate characterization is irrefutably essential.

Abstract

Even civil society was one requirement for the process of democratization, but it does not mean the existence of civil society automatically have a constructive impact to the democratization process. The assumption will be verifiable through qualitative analysis with descriptive analytic method. Experience of Indonesia, Philippines and South Korea showed that the changes of social-democratic politics, were determined by the role of civil society. However, the findings of this study indicate that proliferation of civil society in these countries has led to disagreement among the elements of civil society that have a negative impact for democratization. Thus, civil society can be a trouble maker for the process of democratization.

This article examines the political representation of women’s quota required for both political party in the structure of the political party and legislative candidates in the 2014 election. The research mainly deals with question on how the implementation and obstacles of the women’s quota for candidates are. Based on qualitative approach, the resultsof the study indicate that; first, the implementation of recruitment of executive board members by DPW PAN of East Java has been done through a closed mechanism, while the recruitment of legislative candidates washeldin an open mechanism. The quota representationis driven more by external motivation, namely regulatory of quota, rather than internal one, i.e. political awareness.Second, the difficulties in fulfilling the quota of women’s representation of Parliament in DPW PAN of East Java have beencaused mainly by high political cost, low-level popularity, limitedness of female candidate’scapacity, and limitedness of social and political networking of the candidates.
