Abstract

This research is primarily aimed at revealing the impacts of modernization on economical life of the Indians in Cooper’s The Prairie. The study uses interdisciplinary approach, which involves economical, historical, cultural, and ecological approaches, besides mimetic approach. The analysis shows that modernization does not only cause positive impacts but also negative impacts, which are stronger. The bad impacts include monopoly, human and cultural conflict, poverty, disharmony, social injustice of mixed marriage, greediness, kidnapping, law breaking, materialistic life, adultery, divorce, and less religiosity. The positive impacts include independence, adaptation, rationality, and efficiency. The problems appear in the novel reflect the inner conflict of the author (Cooper himself). He questions the ideas of modernization brought by immigrants on the Indian land. To him, modernization can only be enjoyed by the upper class of the society. It cannot meet the necessity of the traditional people. The Indians loose some benefits because of the settlement of the immigrants in their land.

Abstract

Javanese speakers classify plants into two major categories which are named by the words of wit and suket in their language. Generally the word wit reffers to large plants while the word suket refers to small plants. However, the size of plants is not the only criterion; there are some small plants which are referred to as wit not suket. In this case, it seems that the function of plants in Javanese society is also another criterion and there are cultural reasons why such plants are classified as wit.

Abstract

To current generation of experts on humanities studies the very idea of philology suggests something antiquarian and musty. In order to avoid the stigma, firstly, cartography of the oriental philological studies is needed. Secondly, the theorem that philology is identical to the text editing and textual criticism needs to be reconsidered. It was used by orientalists to exploit the needed information for mastery goals. Therefore, decolonization of research method must be done. Thirdly, in connection with postcolonial realm, philology must be cosmopolitan and secular. Philology must familiarize itself with interdisciplinary studies and be sensitive to the development of new humanities theories because in fact philology is the most basic tool of the interpretive humanities.

Abstract

This study aims at reviving the dance of Bedayo Tulang Bawang and exploring the deep elements of the dance. Another objective is to comprehend the implied meaning of the neglected dance through the historical texts and contexts as well as the Menggala’s relevant culture. In the resurgence of the dance, there were obstacles such as the limited data and manuscripts on the dance of Bedayo Tulang Bawang. The only available sources are the dressmakers, the learners, and the people who happen to know the choreography. It is important and necessary to understand the dance because the dance has a deep sense and history in conjunction with the life of the people in Bujung Menggala Kampung, Tulang Bawang Regency.

Abstract

The type of Hegel’s philosophical system is ‘dialectic‘, i.e it synthesizes subjective idealism type of Fichte’s philosophy and objective idealism type of Schelling’s philosophy. For Hegel, Fichte’s philosophy is named as ‘thesis’ and Schelling’s philosophy is named as ‘antithesis’. Whereas Hegel’s philosophy itself is named as synthesis of both, so the dialectic of Hegel’s philosophy consists of three phases, namely, thesis-antithesis-synthesis. Synthesis as the mediator of thesis and antithesis internally still contains the truth value from thesis and antithesis. The famous proposition which then makes Hegel become more popular is: “all real things are rational and all rational things are real.”This proposition and his dialectical concept: thesis-antithesis-synthesis, is relevant to examine the Preamble of the 1945 Constitution (Pembukaan Undang-Undang Dasar 1945). The main point is thesis (colonization) against antithesis (struggle) and then the result is synthesis (independence).

Abstract

This paper attempts to explore the roles of Islamic social organizations which have been very instrumental in the social and cultural transformations in Indonesia. The birth of Islamic organizations and Islamic leaders cannot be separated from oppression of the colonials which had resulted in poverty and backwardness among the Indonesian people. The exploitation of the colonial rulers as well as the oppression of the feudal authorities had created bad attitudes which were against the values of Islam. This paper also observes the conditions which gave birth to some Islamic social movements and describes how social and cultural environments had forced the Islamic leaders and social organizations to find the way out of the problems by conducting social and cultural reformation. They had been successful and the present reformists should learn from their success.

Abstract

Gender bias is an important theme in Gender Archaeology. It is influenced by modern people thinking and it has influenced archaeological interpretation for a long time. As a result, archaeological interpretation of past society is not objective. This problem should be solved to reach an objective interpretation of people’s life in the past. The author argues that gender bias in archaeology can be solved by actively criticizing androcentrism and paying more attention to men and women’s relationship in the past.

Abstract

The relationship between Korea and Indonesia has been staggeringly improving for the last four decades. This remarkable improvement is visible in the fields of economy, politics, as well as in social and cultural ones. For a divided country like Korea, Indonesia is considered to have an influential impact in international politics. This leads to an understanding that the need for Indonesian studies in Korea is an important factor in determining the two countries’ relationship. The Department of Malay – Indonesian Studies at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) was even established ten years before the establishment of the two countries’ official diplomatic ties. Since its establishment, it had experienced numerous obstacles along the way. Nevertheless, this department has flourished as the two countries continue their cooperation. Since then, Indonesian language and Indonesian area studies have become more and more well recognized and increasingly accepted in various fields in Korea. Apart from HUFS, there are also other universities in Korea offering Indonesian studies-related subjects. Still, there have been some setbacks and difficulties in securing Indonesian studies to be more beneficial to enhance the governmental relationship between the two nations. For that reason, this short paper will outline an overview on the historical background of Indonesian language and Indonesian area studies in Korea together with the impacts derived from such learning. In addition, this paper is hoped to present an increasingly ongoing relationship between Korea and Indonesia through its language and area studies in order to bring about more prosperous cooperation between the two countries in the future.
