Abstract

Using an ethnographic research technique, within aninterpretive framework, this study sought to understand genderrelations in some wayang Jekdong performances from the perspectiveof the members themselves. Using interviews and observation, theresearch was carried out continuously over a period several months.Having developed categories and established themes, the data wereinterpreted using the analytic narrative. The entry of women into thefields of wayang Jekdong performances has affected gender roles anddivision of labor within households. Men argue that, while manywomen can try to "have it all," societal expectations placed uponwomen preclude them from devoting themselves fully to domesticactivities and child-rearing. Several themes were identified from themass of raw data: (a) attitudes towards participation, (b) socialinteraction and communication, (c) organisation and compliance withrules and regulations, (d) age, (e) female and male voice. Womansand childrens gave a multitude of reasons for supporting some eventsof wayang Jekdong performance those were reflected in theirbehaviour within the communities. 'The atmosphere during women'sactivities preparing and enjoy to watching wayang Jekdongperformance is very light-hearted because all the women want is tohave fun and enjoy each other's. Women are able to laugh atthemselves and enjoy the experience.

Abstract

This article deals with the development of theindigenous industry in Yogyakarta during the colonialperiod (1830s – 1930s). It is concerned with three aspects:the diversity, absorptive power, and achievement of theindigenous industry. The results showed that theindigenous industry of the colonial era in Yogyakarta had avast spectrum and was capable of developing dynamicallyalthough it never constituted the main stream of thesociety’s economic life. In 1930, its ability to absorbworkers was the highest in Java and Madura, and not muchdifference was found from that of the agriculture. Besides, some branches of the indigenous industry in Yogyakartafound wide markets for their products. The longestablished manufacturing tradition and the increase ofmoney circulation since 1830 were found to be factorsaffecting the dynamics of the Yogyakarta’s indigenousindustry.

Abstract

This study aims at investigating the correlation between thewage level and the well being of the rubber plantation enterpriseworkers in East Aceh in the period of 1907 to 1939. It is of highsignificance in the historiography of Aceh because no studies onAceh have been found that examine plantation enterpriseworkers. The major source of this study is the annual reports ofthe Labor Inspectorate from 1907 to 1939, the collection ofNational Library, Jakarta.        The results of the study indicate that the wage of theplantation enterprise workers in East Aceh was very low andworth only for subsistence and determined unilaterally by theenterprise. The workers contributed nothing to the wagedetermination. The wage level was adjusted to the living cost, especially the price of rice, and the financial condition of theenterprise. Therefore, the living standard of the rubber plantationworkers in East Aceh never changed although their wageincreased.

Abstract

International migration that women from Godong , Grobogan, CentralJava, did has brought about social, cultural, political, and economic changes. This paper focuses on the social changes that these migrant women have caused to their family and the society. These social changes were viewed from local and global points of view, suggesting the loosening of traditional values and the evaluation of family relationship. In-depth interviews with a sample of the women in both Grobogan and Malaysia showed that there was a shift of the values of daughters, and the weakening of traditional social values. The family was found not to be the main control centre in the family life cycle anymore, but the daughters were. The separation of the women from their children suggests the weakening

Abstract

In demographic terms, Besuki residency was a distinctive region comparedwith the rest of Java. It is argued that demographic growth taking place in the region was linked primarily to migration, rather than births and deaths. Drawing upon diverse historical materials, this article discusses the role of migration and natural factors of births and deaths, in populating the region of Besuki by comparing it with Java. In elaborating the arguments, this article specifically looks at factors and conditions that affected each component and its contribution to the demographic process in the region.

Abstract

The reception and perception of the Indonesian society onradio technology in the early period of the appearance of thistechnology in the former Netherlands East Indies can of course betraced in its diverse culture texts, including the literary texts. Eventhough such technological invention as radio is an element that isquite apparent and give colour in many modern Indonesian literarytexts, this element has not seemed to attract the attention of scholarsof Indonesian literary studies. This paper looks at the images of radiotechnology in modern Indonesian literary texts by examining how thistechnology is represented as a matter of course in early modernIndonesian literary works. Two works which will be investigated in thisarticle are Muhammad Dimyati’s Dibalik Tabir Gelombang Radio(1940) and A. Damhoeri’s Zender Nirom (1940). In this paper, Idiscuss them in terms of the explicit presence of radio as an urbanicon and symbol of modernity.

The majority of subjects make handwriting which covers the forms of leaning-corrupted-interpolated-like-letter form, mirrored, and shadowed form. Children's PWL acquisition is related to children engagement in written language activities, social interaction, and exposure.
