Abstract

Education for women, which is at first intended to transform them to be good mothers in raising their children, especially in providing basic education of religion for them, has become a boomerang. Religion and education transform women into religious and intellectual figures. They start to realize and think of their existence. They are different from men only physically, but it does not necessarily mean that they are also intellectually different. They prove themselves that they are able to develop their intellectuality if there is the opportunity. They become women who are thinking, confident, brave, and self-sufficient. Their role and activities in religion show their potency.

There are three primary functions of dance in human life, i.e., for ritual, for personal entertainment, and for aesthetic presentation. All dance experts believe that the oldest function of dance in human life is for ritual. Dance is needed on the occasion of birth, circumcision, marriage, death, war, changes of the moon and sickness. Bali is the richest island of dance in Indonesia and known as "paradise in the world of arts. The Balinese dance ritual dances for gods, for spirits of the ancestors, for religious seers, for human beings, and also for the underworld spirits. Indonesia is rich in dance for personal entertainment, such as tayuban in Central and East Java, Jaipongan in West Java, gandrung in East Java, joget in Bali, ronggeng Melayu in Sumatera, etc. The development of urban population with sufficient income has influenced the development of dance as aesthetic presentation, because the urban people, categorized as the cultural consumers, need some aesthetic entertainment for their leisure time. Abstract

This article explores the existence of Bhīṣma in theAmbâśraya Kakavin with applying the Dhvani theory ofĀnandavardhana in his book Dhvanyāloka. Dhvani isbasically a hint, a silent suggestion, and works merethrough evocation than through implication. Whatever isimplied can be arrived at merely from an analysis of theimplying statement or gesture. Not so with dhvani. Noamount of analysis can be lay bare the dhvani-effect, ifthe hearer/reader does not have a special qaulity thatattunes him to it. Whereas an implication can be pin-pointed, and even expressed, dhvani can never be pin-pointed, much less can it be expressed in words. It can atbest be merely pointed at through figures speech of OldJavanese kakavin but its precise content evadesformulation.

Abstract

This article is aimed at scrutinizing the ecranisation in thetransformation across genre, that is from novels to films, and viceversa. It was found that the ecranisation process from novels tofilms is a process envolving the reactualisation from the writtenlanguage to the audio visual language. The implication of thatprocess is that there are some efforts to shrink, add, or alter partsof the story for various goals. Seen from the perspective of thesociology of literature, this effort could initiate the low readingmotivation to the high watching motivation. In the context ofaesthetic idealism, ecranisation actually exposes an author’sdepression due to his lack of ability to articulate his audio visuallanguage in representing the written language. In contrast, filmshas been de-ecranised into novels. An across genre transformationprocess is thus made, that is from the audio visual tradition, wrapped by advanced technology, to the reading-writing tradition. The latter tradition phenomena is different from the former, specifically in its perspective of the social function of literature.Unfortunately, both cannot avoid the hegemony of industrialisation.Literature and films are no more concerned with easthetic values.Rather they mingle in industrialisation, in particular theentertainment industry.
