Abstract

This article discusses the transformation of ludruk performances, from Soekarno to Reformation era. In discussing the problem, we apply a cultural studies perspective. From our analysis, there are three findings related to the discursive transformation of ludruk stories. Firstly, in the era of Soekarno, many ludruk groups joined Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat (Lekra/Institute of People’s Culture), which had many ideological similarities with Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI/ Indonesian Communist Party). Consequently, ludruk groups performed some provocative stories that exposed the problems of lower-class people and criticized Islamic religious beliefs. Secondly, after the bloody 1965 tragedy, the regional military apparatuses controlled ludruk groups and their performances, including the stories. In this era, ludruk stories supported the New Order regime’s national development programs and raised people’s consensus on the significance of militarism through popular stories about people’s resistance to colonizers. Thirdly, in the Reformation era, some ludruk groups make newer, interesting stories about many complicated social problems in contemporary society. Finally, we conclude that this mode of transformation through creating newer, social problem-based stories that intertwine with historical conditions has deep historical roots in ludruk performances. In addition, during the Reformation period in whichmarket capitalism becomes a dominant ideology and practice, such newer stories and breakthroughs of staging may become a suitable creative survival strategy for ludruk groups in the midst of techno-cultural popularity as the dominant taste and orientation in societies.

Abstract

Linguistics and communication development in infant can best be understood by tracing the forms and patterns of interaction between a child and other family members especially his/her parents. Father and mother are significant others for a child in developing communication and linguistic capacities. From interview with and observation on families in Poh Roboh, Condong Catur, Sleman Yogyakarta-Indonesia, this research found that the position of parents in the family is important not only for making the relationship better, but also for increasing children’s preparedness for entering the society. Children’s capacities and capabilites in communication  make them emotionally better. There are three imporant positions of familiy in developing a child’s communication. First, parents can increase the capacities and capabilities in semantics, syntactics and pragmatics. These are linguistic dimensions that underlie child’s communication capabilities. Second, parents can be referent for a child in seeking social involvements and social needs. These dimensions can be seen in two forms of interaction: involvement and dependency. Third, parents can be model for a child. For manifestation and involvement in the social interaction, a child imitates and depends on the parents to express his/her emotion. The research concludes that family has important role in enhancing the development of  linguistic and communication competence in infant.

Abstract

This paper proposes Mary Whitebird’s Ta-Na-E-Ka to be used as the teaching material to raise students’ ecological awareness based on the research conducted in the English Department, Jenderal Soedirman University, Purwokerto, Indonesia. This is because literature is believed to represent authentic social, political, ecological, and historical events from a particular range of periods, so literature can be employed as authentic teaching material to teach both the language and culture embedded in it. In this particular study, Mary Whitebird’s Ta-Na-E-Ka was chosen because it offers a distinct ecological theme. The literary theory exercised is Ecocriticism, i.e. the study of the relationship between literature and the physical environment; it celebrates nature, the life force, and the wilderness told in the story. This qualitative study employs the data gained from the readers’ questionnaire. It successfully probes the readers’ understanding of the elements of the story, e.g., characters and characterization and theme; it also shows that students are able to capture the issue of nature, physical environment and their relationship with the Kaws as it is proposed by ecocriticism. Therefore, the readers, who are students, become the ecocritics; they are more caring to the world and its nature. In other words, their ecological awareness has sharpened eventually, and Mary Whitebird’s Ta-Na-E-Ka has been successfully used both as the teaching material and as the authentic material to understand the ecocentric value narrated in the story.

Abstract

Belenggu is a novel written by Armijn Pane in 1938, whereas Pengakuan Pariyem is a lyrical novel written by Linus Suryadi AG that published in 1980. Both are interested to be analyzed from linguistic aspects, especially in relation to gender dan patriarchal issues. In this case, the proper approach is feminist stylistics by Sara Mills since it analyzed literary works from linguistic aspects and then is enlarged on the contexts of surroundings when it was published. The results are that Belenggu basically used masculine languages including word, phrases, clauses, sentences, and discourses when it is related to its contexts. Contextually, Belenggu represented author responses to conditions of his society in which women tried to insist their rights for equality (to men). It also represented author’s critic to women since it is better that women still work domestically and support her husband. Meanwhile, Pengakuan Pariyem is a lyrical novel that considers men and women have mutual relationships although women still work domestically and men work outside.

Abstract

This study discusses the Arabic contributions to the Bahasa Indonesia in the perspective of language and culture developments. The data are taken from Big Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI). Based on the analysis done shows that there are three important aspects of the Arabic contribution to the Bahasa Indonesia, namely vocabulary enrichment, grammar system, and cultural development. In the aspect of vocabulary enrichment, approximately 2.336 Arabic vocabularies have moved into Bahasa Indonesia. In the aspect of grammar, the Arabic grammatical system is used in the grammatical system of Bahasa Indonesian such as gender formation and formation of word that shows the meaning of nature. In the cultural aspect, the Arabic language also contribute to the development of Indonesian culture, such as the use of proper names in Arabic by the Indonesian Muslims, religious institutions, and state. Moreover, the Arabic terms are also used in everyday expressions, literature, and in the constitutional system of the Republic of Indonesia.

Abstract

In this article a definition of culture is proposed in relation with the program of “the development of the Indonesian Culture.” This program, which is stated in the Indonesian Constitution, article No. 32, is the responsibility of the government of the Republic Indonesia to implement. The proposed definition is a result of an explorative study on the definitions of culture used in four important sources. The sources are anthropology, various disciplines of science beyond anthropology, articles written by Indonesian cultural thinkers and a document published by UNESCO in 1983. Culture, according to the proposed definition is “the capacity or capabilities of the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual features of a social group which function to enhance the human dignity of the group.” By using this definition, it is hoped, the government of the Republic Indonesia will be able to design a public policy on “the development of the Indonesian Culture”, which is both modifiable and measurable.

Abstract

Ethnoarchaeology Research is a reconstruction of archaeological context in answering the society of human life in the past, present, and future. The objective of the study is to provide support of anthropological data for understanding archaeological phenomena. One aspect of ethnoarchaeology is the indigenous house on the south coast of Ceram Island in Central Mollucas regency, Mollucas Province. The study aims to understand the prehistoric charactheristic contained in the indigenous house of Nuaulu People in South Ceram. It uses qualitative approach and qualitative analysis. The results showed that the prehistoric characteristics of the indigenous house of Nuaulu People located on the southern coast of Seram island are found in its shape (on poles), settlement patterns, and structure.

Abstract

Sakura performing arts in Liwa, West Lampung regency, has several varieties of characters in accordance with types of performance. Sakura, viewed from its appearance, has been made with a lot of varieties of style and costume which is in line with the performers’ development of science and knowledge. It can also be defined as a traditional game using many varieties of Sakura characters. Sakura consists of two types: (a) Sakura Kamak and (b) Sakura Helau. Sakura Kamak was in the past used as a ritual for worshipping ancestral spirits described to have ugly-looking faces wearing shabby clothes. Sakura means a mask and Kamak means ugly, dirty, or old. Thus, Sakura Kamak is identifiable from its face shapes and ugly, dirty, ragged, and muddy dress. Meanwhile, Sakura Helauhas a good-looking face and nice dress. The Sakura types are named according to their costumes, dance movement styles, and behavior of the Sakura performers, rather dance movement styles, and behavior of the Sakura performers, rather than the expressions or appearances.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the sketches of Minangkabau society before independence as reflected in Nur St. Iskandar’s and Hamka’s novels. In Iskandar’s novel, a good character in society is a Western educated person who is an employer at the Dutch office. In Hamka’s novel, a good character of society is one holding religious (Islam) education and working as an entrepreneur. Both characters reflect a social group who tends to demonstrate rationality and good attitude, but opposes any tradition that contradicts religion (Islam). The life sketches reflected in Nur St. Iskandar’s and Hamka’s novels also have impacts on the Minangkabau societies’ way of thinking.

Abstract

This article aims to describe the Sundanese manuscript of wawacan Carios Tamim by way of editing its text and analyzing its structure.Besides, this article also explores how, by applying the actant theory and functional model promoted by Greimas, the events are sequentially related through the characters. From the analysis, it can be seen that the formal structure of Carios Tamim contains 14 pupuh in 390 couplets and 2644 lines in three elements of story making, i.e. the manggala (preliminary), the content of the story, and the ending. Meanwhile, the analysis of its narrative structure shows that Carios Tamim has the plot, the characters, the characterization, and the setting so closely related that they build up the theme of the story, i.e. raising a truth out of two truths. The truth as revealed in Carios Tamim is strongly concerned with the munakahat (marriage). On the ground of Greimas’ actant theory and functional model, the character Tamim Ibnu Habib Ad-Dāri and his wife as subjects are successfully managed to get on the object owing to the events they are experiencing are closely related one another in a causal relationship.
