Abstract

Being modern in local sphere at the 80s was a complicated process. Local societies experienced and dreamed modern cultures as the dominant discursive formation caused by Green Revolution, but they still believed and practiced traditional cultures. The New Order regime’s developmentalism policy resulted socio-cultural shifting and change in both cities and villages. This article, by combining cultural studies and postcolonial studies, discusses genealogy of socio-cultural shifting and change in a village at the 80s when modern cultures came into peasants’ life--world through public television programs, education, and industrial products. However, I see the villagers could play in-between space to appropriate some modern cultures and negotiate some traditional cultures into their daily life. The cultural in-betweenness has represented the dynamics of village postcoloniality under direction of the New Order regime and has made modernity as ideological dream for the villagers in constructing their locality. Abstract

In the Reformation period, the state regime still mobilizes traditional-ideal values as national culturewithout giving conceptual and operational explanations. In this article, I combine two approaches, cultural studies and postcolonial studies, for reading national culture as represented in some PresidentSoesilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s presidential speeches. I will analyze ideal-but-ambivalent constructionsof national culture in regime’s perspective as represented in those speeches, particularly, in the contextof continuous of national culture in regime’s perspective in those speeches, particularly, in the context ofthe government’s continuous mobilization of traditional meanings as the invisible power for Indonesianpeople, while, at the same time, placing emphasis on economic progress.Instead of a strategic culturalconstruction, national culture produces its own deconstruction and fails to be discursive formation.Further, I argue that the regime operates their governmentality by reconstructing newer nationalculture based on market economics as discursive constructions, which ideally can provide conceptualand material basis for state regime in conducting governance and for citizens in achieving welfare inneoliberal formation.

Abstract

This article aims to criticize the incorporation and commodification of Using cultures undergone by Abdullah Azwar Anas in Banyuwangi, East Java. To answer the problem, we analyze primary data from our field research and secondary data from online media related to AAA’s efforts to incorporate, articulate, and commodify Using cultures into various carnival programs (2011-2017) by applying theories of commodification, postmodernism, and hegemony. The result of this study shows that, driven by his desire to promote Using cultures globally in the midst of postmodern trends, since 2011 the government of Banyuwangi has created many carnivals and festivals, such as “Banyuwangi Ethno Carnival”, “Banyuwangi Beach Jazz Festival”, “Parade Gandrung Sewu”, and other various programs. Economically, the programs are idealized to support the regional economic growth through tourism activities, both for domestic and international tourists, by displaying traditional expressions with new styles and performances. Politically, the carnivals and festivals can support AAA efforts to negotiate its political concern in order to produce consensus.Copyright (c) 2017 by KARSA. Abstract

This article discusses the transformation of ludruk performances, from Soekarno to Reformation era. In discussing the problem, we apply a cultural studies perspective. From our analysis, there are three findings related to the discursive transformation of ludruk stories. Firstly, in the era of Soekarno, many ludruk groups joined Lembaga Kebudayaan Rakyat (Lekra/Institute of People’s Culture), which had many ideological similarities with Partai Komunis Indonesia (PKI/ Indonesian Communist Party). Consequently, ludruk groups performed some provocative stories that exposed the problems of lower-class people and criticized Islamic religious beliefs. Secondly, after the bloody 1965 tragedy, the regional military apparatuses controlled ludruk groups and their performances, including the stories. In this era, ludruk stories supported the New Order regime’s national development programs and raised people’s consensus on the significance of militarism through popular stories about people’s resistance to colonizers. Thirdly, in the Reformation era, some ludruk groups make newer, interesting stories about many complicated social problems in contemporary society. Finally, we conclude that this mode of transformation through creating newer, social problem-based stories that intertwine with historical conditions has deep historical roots in ludruk performances. In addition, during the Reformation period in whichmarket capitalism becomes a dominant ideology and practice, such newer stories and breakthroughs of staging may become a suitable creative survival strategy for ludruk groups in the midst of techno-cultural popularity as the dominant taste and orientation in societies.

Abstract

This article deals with an ethnic identity-based-power through the mobilization of Using cultures in Banyuwangi under local government policies in post-Reformation. By juxtaposing Foucauldian discourse, Gramscian hegemony, and political economy perspective, we discuss some cultural projects conducted by two Banyuwangi regents in post-Reformation periods, Samsul Hadi (2000-2005) and Abdullah Azwar Anas (2010-2015 and re-elected for 2016-2021 period). With different emphasized aspects, both of them created programs, which incorporated and mobilized Using cultures for accomplishing their political economy goals. Samsul legalized Using cultural expression, such as a local dance and language, as the way to strengthen the dominant-ethnic identity and reach consensus for his political authority. In more sparkling activities, Anas has transformed Using identity into various carnival programs, which, in one side, have supported tourism industry and, in other side, have helped him in gaining consensus for his hegemonic position. However, in the context of real cultural empowerment, those programs have not given positive effect for the cultural worker in the grass root.

Abstract

This article discusses (1) creativities and complicated-tragic problems of Banyuwangen musicians, especially they who involved in Lekra (People Cultural Institution, the cultural organization of Indonesian Communist Party), during 1965 and some years later and (2) the development of Banyuwangen music industries after the bloody 1965. In Orla (Old Order), most of Banyuwangen musicians joined, culturally and ideologically, Lekra that had ideal promises to strengthen and empower people arts and cultures as the base for Indonesian culture. At post-1965, they experienced tragic life caused by regime’s surveillance mechanism towards cultural activities that were re assumed having relationship to communism. Fortunately, their friends from another cultural institutions helped and saved their life by arguing the government that they are cultural assets and very important for New Order regime. After 1965, the government to ensure disappearance of Leftist ideology guided Banyuwangen music industries. This development led to private music industries that produced and published Banyuwangen music in Melayu and kendang kempul instrument as the base of the recent development of Banyuwangen music industries.
