Abstract

This study aims to explore the dynamics of children's lives in families of construction laborers in Buniara Village. Using a qualitative phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation study. The findings reveal that economic limitations force children to leave school and help with the family economy, leading to vulnerability to negative social behaviors. The role of the family in the socialization and education of children is not optimal, and the children’s future aspirations often conflict with economic realities. This study highlights the need for educational assistance and social protection programs at the village level.

Abstract

Pulau Pinang Village represents a coastal community where ancestral cultural practices continue to be maintained in everyday social life. One of the traditions that remains practiced today is Nebe, a traditional fish-catching technique carried out without the use of nets or bait. This practice involves using a wooden stick to locate fish hiding within crevices among rocks or coral in the shallow coastal waters. The persistence of this tradition is significant not only because it relates to the economic activities of local fishermen, but also because it reflects locally embedded knowledge, ecological skills, and social values that have been transmitted across generations. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive method to explore the social and cultural meanings of the Nebe practice within the community of Pulau Pinang Village. Data were collected through field observations, interviews with local residents, and documentation of the practice, particularly during communal activities and village competitions where Nebe is performed collectively. This methodological approach enables a deeper understanding of how the practice is carried out and how community members interpret its significance within their broader social life. The findings indicate that Nebe functions not merely as a traditional fishing technique but also embodies strong social and cultural dimensions. The tradition serves as a symbol of coastal community identity while reflecting a harmonious relationship between humans and the marine environment. Furthermore, the organization of Nebe in the form of competitions or communal events strengthens social interaction, solidarity, and collective belonging among villagers. The practice also plays an important role in transmitting local wisdom—such as cooperation, sportsmanship, honesty, and respect for ancestral heritage—to younger generations. In this sense, Nebe can be understood as an integral component of the cultural system of Pulau Pinang Village, whose continuity continues to be actively preserved by the community.

Abstract

Social media has now become the main place for young people in Indonesia to create and negotiate their identities. Interactions that take place in the digital world, algorithms from various platforms, and visual and performative cultures create new patterns of behavior that influence how teenagers see themselves and their roles in the digital community. This study explores this phenomenon through the lens of Pierre Bourdieu's habitus theory to explain how digital dispositions are formed from repeated experiences in using platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube. This study applies a literature review method by analyzing various local and international studies. The findings show that young people's digital identities are not only influenced by personal decisions but also by social and digital structures such as algorithms, the aesthetics of each platform, and social, cultural, and symbolic capital. Young people also apply strategies of adaptation and rejection to the visibility rules set by platforms. This study emphasizes that identity in the social media era is a constantly changing process that is negotiated through interactions between youth agency and complex digital structures. These results provide deeper insights into how the identity of the younger generation is formed in today's digital society.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

The phenomenon of Eldest Daughter Syndrome is increasingly discussed on social media, particularly on the X platform, where posts highlight the excessive burden placed on the eldest daughter. Complaints regarding domestic demands, high expectations to set a good example for younger siblings, caregiving roles, and emotional pressure indicate that this condition is not merely an individual issue but part of a social construct shaped by family socialisation patterns. This study aims to analyse how family socialisation, gender norms, and role expectations contribute to the emergence of the Eldest Daughter Syndrome. The research employs a qualitative approach, using data from social media posts. Analysis is conducted using thematic analysis to identify narrative patterns related to the division of roles within the family and gender bias. The findings indicate that the role of the eldest daughter is shaped through a socialisation process that places an unequal burden of responsibility upon her, making her vulnerable to role conflict, feelings of guilt when prioritising her own needs, stress, and emotional exhaustion. This study underscores the importance of family awareness in restructuring role divisions to ensure a fairer distribution, thereby preventing the repeated pressure on the eldest daughter.
