Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women remains a significant nutritional problem that increases the risk of pregnancy complications, low birth weight, and stunting. Preventing CED requires improving pregnant women's knowledge of adequate nutritional intake during pregnancy and promoting the utilization of locally available food as supplementary nutrition. This community service program aimed to improve pregnant women's knowledge regarding the prevention of Chronic Energy Deficiency through health education and the provision of cookies made from mung bean (Vigna radiata) and purple taro (Colocasia esculenta). The program was conducted at Cahaya 2 Primary Clinic, Lubuk Pakam, Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, in April 2026, involving 19 pregnant women diagnosed with CED. An educational-participatory approach was employed, consisting of health education sessions, interactive discussions, distribution of educational leaflets, provision of mung bean and purple taro cookies as supplementary food, and evaluation using pre-test and post-test questionnaires. The evaluation results demonstrated an improvement in participants' knowledge following the intervention. Before the educational session, most participants had a moderate level of knowledge (52.6%), while only 21.1% demonstrated good knowledge. Following the intervention, the proportion of participants with good knowledge increased to 89.5%, and no participants remained in the poor knowledge category. Product acceptability assessment showed that 94.7% of participants liked the taste and texture of the cookies, while all participants (100%) reported that the cookies were easy to consume as a supplementary food during pregnancy. These findings indicate that health education combined with the provision of locally sourced mung bean and purple taro cookies effectively improved pregnant women's knowledge regarding the prevention of Chronic Energy Deficiency and achieved high acceptability as an alternative supplementary food. Similar programs should be implemented continuously through antenatal care services to support improvements in maternal nutritional status and contribute to stunting prevention beginning during pregnancy.

Abstract

Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation can cause various adverse effects on the skin, including erythema, premature skin aging, and an increased risk of skin cancer. One of the most effective preventive measures is the proper use of sunscreen selected according to its Sun Protection Factor (SPF) value and individual skin characteristics. However, adolescents' knowledge regarding appropriate sunscreen selection remains limited. This community service program aimed to improve students' knowledge and awareness of selecting appropriate sunscreen based on SPF variation and skin type characteristics. The program employed a participatory educational approach through health education sessions, interactive discussions, demonstrations, and skin condition assessments using a skin analyzer. The activity was conducted at Wirahusada Health Vocational High School, Medan, involving 20 students as participants. The educational materials covered UV radiation, skin types, SPF classification, sunscreen types, and the correct application of sunscreen. Skin condition assessments were performed to determine participants' skin moisture levels as the basis for providing appropriate sunscreen recommendations. The assessment results revealed that 11 participants (55.5%) had normal skin moisture, 7 participants (35.0%) had dry skin, and 2 participants (10.0%) had moist skin. Throughout the program, participants demonstrated high enthusiasm and active engagement during the educational sessions and discussions. The integration of health education with skin condition assessment effectively enhanced participants' understanding of selecting sunscreen according to their individual skin characteristics. Overall, this community service program successfully improved students' knowledge and awareness regarding the appropriate use of sunscreen as an essential strategy for protecting skin health from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiation.

Abstract

The increasing rate of Sectio Caesarea (SC) deliveries has highlighted the need for effective postoperative care to minimize complications and promote maternal recovery. Early mobilization is a recommended intervention; however, its implementation is often limited by inadequate maternal knowledge and practical skills. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of post-Sectio Caesarea mothers regarding early mobilization to accelerate postoperative recovery, reduce the risk of complications, and enhance maternal independence during the postpartum period. The program adopted an educational-participatory approach incorporating health education, demonstrations, hands-on practice, and direct mentoring. Program effectiveness was evaluated using a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 20 post-Sectio Caesarea mothers at Grandmed Hospital, Lubuk Pakam. Participants' knowledge was assessed using structured questionnaires administered before and after the educational intervention, while practical skills were evaluated through direct observation using a standardized checklist. Participant satisfaction was also measured through a feedback questionnaire. The findings demonstrated a substantial improvement in participants' knowledge, with the proportion of mothers categorized as having good knowledge increasing from 15.0% before the intervention to 80.0% afterward, whereas the proportion with poor knowledge declined from 50.0% to 0%. Furthermore, 45.0% of participants achieved a very good skill level and 40.0% achieved a good skill level, indicating that 85.0% successfully performed early mobilization according to the recommended procedures. Participant satisfaction was highly positive, with 70.0% reporting being very satisfied and 30.0% satisfied with the program. In conclusion, an educational-participatory approach integrating health education, educational media, demonstrations, practical training, and mentoring effectively improved maternal knowledge, practical skills, and readiness to perform early mobilization safely, thereby supporting faster postoperative recovery and improving the quality of postpartum care.
