Abstract

Background Floods are hydrometeorological disasters that have extensive impacts on public health; however, musculoskeletal disorders are often overlooked in post-disaster studies. Heavy physical activities, non-ergonomic postures, and prolonged exposure to extreme environments during and after floods may increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders among adults. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and determinants of post-flood musculoskeletal disorders among adult populations in Batang Toru, North Sumatra.This study employed an analytical observational design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 210 flood-affected adults were selected using multistage cluster random sampling. Musculoskeletal disorders were assessed using standardized questionnaires, while determinant variables included demographic characteristics, flood exposure, and physical activities during flooding. Data were analyzed using bivariate analysis and multivariate logistic regression. The results showed that the prevalence of post-flood musculoskeletal disorders was 62.4%. The most frequently affected body regions were the lower back, shoulders, and knees. Multivariate analysis revealed that age over 45 years (OR=2.18), engagement in heavy physical activities during floods (OR=2.73), and flood exposure lasting seven days or more (OR=1.96) were significant determinants of musculoskeletal disorders (p<0.05). Conclusion: Post-flood musculoskeletal disorders are relatively high and are influenced by age and physical exposure.

Abstract

Abstract Objective: This study to determine the relationship between physical activity and dynamic balance on quality of life in the elderly. Methods: This type of research is a descriptive correlative study between physical activity and dynamic balance on quality of life in the elderly at the Panti Werdha Wisma Mulia, West Jakarta with purposive sampling data collection technique. Physical activity examination using the Physical Activity Scale for Elderly (PASE) questionnaire, dynamic balance measurement using the 10 Step Tandem Test measuring instrument, and quality of life examination using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF (WHOQOL-BREF) questionnaire. Results: The Mean±SD value of physical activity was 13.62±3.373 and the Mean±SD value of dynamic balance was 3.24±0.802, and the Mean±SD value of quality of life was 82.47±9.109. Then, the results of the hypothesis test using the Spearman Rank Test on the physical activity variable obtained a p value = 0.007 where p <α value (0.05) and r value = 0.397 which means there is a significant relationship between physical activity and quality of life in the elderly. While on the dynamic balance variable obtained a p value = 0.184 where p> α value (0.05) and r value = 0.202 which means there is no significant relationship between dynamic balance and quality of life in the elderly. Conclusion: there is a significant relationship between physical activity and quality of life in the elderly and there is no significant relationship between dynamic balance and quality of life in the elderly.

Abstract

Background: Upper Cross Syndrome (UCS) is a postural deformity characterized by muscle imbalance, involving tension in the pectoralis major, upper trapezius, and levator scapulae muscles, along with weakness in the deep neck flexors, middle-lower trapezius, and serratus anterior. This condition is frequently triggered by prolonged use of electronic devices, leading to neuromuscular imbalance and musculoskeletal disorders. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of Scapular Retraction Exercise and Neuromuscular Taping (NMT) on correcting shoulder posture in a patient with UCS. Methods: The research design is a single case study of a 19-year-old male student diagnosed with UCS. Data collection involved measuring the Forward Shoulder Angle (FSA). The intervention consisted of 12 treatment sessions conducted over 6 weeks. Results: Following 12 sessions of combined scapular retraction exercises and NMT application, the final evaluation showed a significant increase in the FSA angle from 46° (E0) to 54° (E1). This increase indicates a reduction in shoulder protraction, moving the acromion toward a more posterior position. Conclusion: The integration of Scapular Retraction Exercise and Neuromuscular Taping (NMT) is effective in improving posture in Upper Cross Syndrome patients through the synergy of active muscle strengthening and mechanical muscle relaxation.
