Abstract

The decline in the reading culture has become the main cause, and even the learning culture in schools is gradually disappearing. Although the percentage of school children has increased with the government's compulsory education program, this does not automatically improve the quality of education. Even though children go to school every day, they never really learn, especially due to the low reading culture. School seems to have become a daily routine. Schools play a crucial role in instilling a culture of reading and writing (literacy) in students. Therefore, every school must fully support the cultivation of a reading and writing (literacy) culture. Literacy culture itself is related to fostering reading and writing interest in elementary school children. In fostering an interest in reading and writing, literacy culture is the key to realizing that interest. Consequently, fostering an interest in reading and writing requires several roles, such as facilities and infrastructure in schools, the community, and parents. If these roles are inadequate, it will have a detrimental impact on the sustainability of a good literacy culture.

Abstract

This research aimed to enhance reading interest and reading culture among children at Fiber Permata Kasih orphanage. The research subjects were elementary school-aged children residing in the orphanage. The identified problem was the lack of reading culture among these children, leading to learning difficulties. This issue was exacerbated by the digitalization trend and the use of gadgets, which consumed the children's time for reading books. This research was an educational mini-project utilizing the social group work approach. The Delphi method was employed through Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The stages of social group work were carried out, ranging from the preparation to the termination phase. Activities were conducted in the form of interactive sessions using engaging picture and game methods to attract children's interest in reading. The research results demonstrated an increase in reading interest and reading culture among the orphanage children after participating in the activities. The children became more interested in reading and understood the importance of reading for their learning process at school. The implication of this research is the need to develop programs that promote the growth of reading culture among children from an early age, particularly for those living in orphanages

Abstract

This article aims to identify the genetic variability controlling growth and production traits in local male sheep and Kacang goats, as well as estimate genetic parameters and variance components to enhance their genetic quality. Conducted at the Loka Pengabdian Kambing Potong, Sei Putih, the research employed a quantitative descriptive approach, collecting data on birth weight, weaning weight at three months, and pre-weaning growth rate. The analysis utilized statistical models to estimate heritability, repeatability, and breeding values, providing a comprehensive understanding of the genetic potential of these animals. The results revealed significant genetic diversity that could be leveraged for selective breeding programs to improve productivity and competitiveness of local livestock. The study underscores the importance of systematic breeding programs not only for increased production but also for the conservation of valuable genetic resources, contributing to food security and rural development in Indonesia.
