Abstract

Background: Drowning is defined as death caused by asphyxia due to immersion in water that occurs within 24 hours of the incident. Immediate and appropriate first aid is essential to increase the chances of survival. Lifeguards, as the front line in aquatic emergencies, must have adequate knowledge and skills in performing first aid for drowning victims. Health education is one of the efforts to improve lifeguards' understanding and ability to act promptly and correctly in such critical situations. Method: This study employed a pre-experimental research design using a one-group pretest-posttest approach. A total of 33 lifeguards from three different swimming pools in Jambi City were selected using a total sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire measuring the level of knowledge regarding first aid for drowning victims before and after the health education intervention. To determine the significance of the changes in knowledge, data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Results: The results of the bivariate analysis using the Wilcoxon test showed a Z value of -5.205 with a significance level of 0.001 (p < 0.05). These findings indicate a statistically significant improvement in lifeguards’ knowledge after receiving health education. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected, and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Conclusion: Health education has a significant positive effect on increasing lifeguard knowledge regarding first aid for drowning victims in Jambi City swimming pools. These results emphasize the importance of continuous education and training programs to enhance the readiness and effectiveness of lifeguards in responding to drowning emergencies.

Abstract

Background: First aid is a crucial initial step in the event of an accident, serving to minimize the severity of trauma and facilitate subsequent medical treatment. A prompt and appropriate response can significantly influence the survival and recovery outcomes of accident victims. To foster such responsiveness, community involvement and awareness are essential. Community members, as first responders at the scene, play a critical role in administering immediate aid. However, their effectiveness is heavily influenced by their knowledge and attitudes toward first aid. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge and attitudes of the community regarding first aid for traffic accident victims along the Palembang–Jambi route, specifically in the Bayung Lencir area. Method: This research employed a quantitative approach with a descriptive research design using a cross-sectional method. The study was conducted in Bayung Lencir District, Musi Banyuasin Regency from June 19, 2024, to July 16, 2024. The sample consisted of 408 respondents, selected using a non-probability purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing the respondents' knowledge and attitudes toward first aid in traffic accidents. Results: Out of 408 respondents, the majority had a sufficient level of knowledge, with 247 respondents (60.5%). Those categorized as having good knowledge were 88 respondents (21.6%), while 73 respondents (17.9%) had poor knowledge. Regarding attitude, most respondents demonstrated a positive attitude, totaling 332 individuals (81.4%), whereas 76 respondents (18.6%) exhibited a negative attitude toward providing first aid in traffic accident situations. Conclusion: This study reveals that the overall community knowledge and attitude toward first aid in traffic accidents along the Palembang–Jambi Bayung Lencir road fall within the sufficient category. Nevertheless, a notable portion of the population still lacks adequate understanding and confidence in properly administering first aid. These findings highlight the need for targeted community education programs and practical first aid training to ensure a more prepared and responsive public in emergency traffic accident situations.

Abstract

Background: Traffic accidents involving school-aged children are a public health concern in Indonesia, particularly due to inadequate road safety education. The School Safety Zone (Zona Selamat Sekolah/ZOSS) program and First Aid (P3K) knowledge are critical in reducing the impact of accidents, yet many students lack awareness. Educational innovations such as animated videos are considered more effective than traditional lectures in improving student knowledge. Method: This study used a one-group pretest-posttest design involving 30 students from SDN 47 Jambi City. The intervention consisted of an animated video covering ZOSS and First Aid materials, followed by discussion. Student knowledge was assessed using a validated questionnaire before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using paired t-tests. Results: Prior to the intervention, 63.3% of students were in the "poor" knowledge category, with only 3.3% classified as "good." After the intervention, 76.7% of students showed "good" knowledge. Statistical analysis showed a significant improvement in mean scores from 53.1 to 82.7 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Media-based education using animated videos significantly improves students’ knowledge of ZOSS and First Aid. This method is recommended for enhancing traffic safety and emergency preparedness education in primary schools.

Abstract

Background: Anemia is a persistent public health challenge in Indonesia, particularly among adolescent girls, with prevalence reaching 48.9% in 2018. Despite school-based iron and folic acid (IFA) supplementation programs, major implementation challenges remain. Objective: To evaluate the implementation of IFA policies for adolescents in Indonesia and to identify global strategies that can strengthen national anemia prevention efforts. Method: A systematic review was conducted following PRISMA guidelines, focusing on studies published between 2019 and 2024. PubMed, Google Scholar, and official Ministry of Health sources were searched using predefined eligibility criteria. Data from eligible studies were synthesized using thematic analysis. Search strings included terms such as: “iron and folic acid supplementation” OR “iron–folic acid” OR “IFA”, combined with “adolescent” OR “school-age girls”, and “policy” OR “program implementation” OR “coverage” OR “adherence”. Results: Five studies met the inclusion criteria. Four main barriers to effective IFA implementation were identified: (1) low adherence due to side effects and misconceptions; (2) logistical weaknesses in tablet distribution; (3) limited stakeholder engagement; and (4) lack of robust monitoring systems. Evidence from other countries shows that school-based education, digital monitoring, and community involvement can improve coverage and compliance. Conclusion: Indonesia’s IFA policy needs strengthening in both structural and behavioral domains. Integrating education, digital tracking, and peer involvement into existing school-based programs may enhance adherence and long-term sustainability.

Abstract

Background: Exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia has yet to meet the 80% target set by WHO and the Ministry of Health. Coverage improved from 52% in 2017 to 66.1% in 2020 and reached 70.7% in 2022, but overall progress remains modest. Although national policies mandate exclusive breastfeeding, implementation is hampered by shortages of trained counselors, limited facilities, and cultural preferences for early formula feeding. Compared with neighboring countries, Indonesia is in the middle range, performing better than some but still behind regional leaders. To accelerate progress, stronger human resources, consistent workplace support, and greater community engagement are required to achieve national goals and contribute to global child health targets. Method: This study applied a literature review approach using the Google Scholar database. The initial search identified 3,080 articles, and after screening, only five studies (2020–2024, Indonesian language, full text, involving breastfeeding mothers) met the inclusion criteria. The selection stages were described with a PRISMA diagram. Results: Analysis showed that the most frequently reported barrier was the shortage of breastfeeding counselors, appearing in four of the five studies. Additional challenges included limited facilities, cultural habits such as early use of formula, and insufficient support from families and workplaces. Conclusion: The study concludes that limited breastfeeding counselors and weak family and workplace support are the main barriers, requiring stronger human resources and cross-sectoral collaboration.
