Abstract

This article deals with "Figurative Language in Ed Sheeran’s Song Lyrics". The objectives of the study were to find out the types of figurative language in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics and to find out the meaning of figurative language in Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics. The method of the study applied to the research is a qualitative method. The results of this study were 42 figurative sentences found from 9 Ed Sheeran Song Lyrics which consist of metaphor with 14 data, hyperbole with 16 data, personification with 3 data, and simile with 9 data.

Abstract

The objectives of the study are to find out the words of slang words on Instagram, to find out the most dominant word of slang words on Instagram, and also to find out the reason for the dominant word in Instagram. This study applies qualitative and quantitative research methods. This study finds that there are 78 slang words found in Instagram; U, Ur, Yall/ y’all/ yal, Missin, Dressin, BAKKKK, Chill, Tho, Livin Lifeee, homie, Gotta, N, Goooooo, LIT/litty, Bts, Da, Bc, Bro/Bro’s, Unc, Pops, LOL, Kinda, Gonna, Tf, Til/till, Ppl, Fave, Pls, Af, Duckin, Gon’, Givin, Pic, Lil, Yooooo, Fuckin, Cuammm on, Gonna, #tbt, Sickkkk, ZOOONNEE, Deeeepppp, Convos, Gooood, Talkin, Brunch, Thang, Bossman, BTW, Cuz, Em, Ain’t/#aintpeace, Bday, Babe, Ya, Congrats, Tatt, Imma, Makin, #fuck, #swagwars, Wanna, Whoopin, C’mon, Workin, Dis, Mudda Sukka, SISTA, BLM, Bi**h, FOPA, OWAAAT, Joiiiwwnnntttttttzzzz, muthaf*kkin’, ICYMI, Asf, Poppin, and Sleepin. The most dominant word on Instagram was Yall/y’all/ yal (you all). The reasons for the dominant word of slang words on Instagram are to entertain others, keep up with the times, even to reduce or to dispel solemnity or pomposity of conversation.

Abstract

The goal of this study is to analyze the meaning of symbol from dance movements used in Karonese traditional wedding ceremony. The object of the research is the dance movements of the the bride and groom in Karonese traditional wedding ceremony.The analysis shows that the structure of the landek kerja perjabuun consists of endek (knee ups and downs movement), pengodak/odak (bodymovements) and ole or jole jemolah jemole ( hands and fingers movement). The functions of landek in the kerja perjabuun are to ratifycation social institutions, to implement norms in society, to mark the implementation of the marriage ceremony, to signify social status, to show traditional communication, and cultural continuity. The meaning of landek in kerja perjabuun is as symbolic blessing (blessing prayer) to the bride, as a connector to family relationship, respect for the presence of a person in kindship group, learning of Karo traditional norms, prestige for Karo people, an expression of excitement for the family releasing daughter who will go to other families (farewell) and show the tribal existence.

Abstract

This research deals with Figurative Language in Westlife's Selected Song Lyrics. The objective of the research was to find out the types of figurative language, to find out the most dominant type of figurative language found in Westlife's song lyrics, and to find out the reasons for the most dominant type of figurative language used in Westlife's Selected Song Lyrics. The data of the study were figurative language found in Westlife's song lyrics. The results of research, there were four types of figurative language used in Westlife's song lyrics, namely: metaphor, simile, personification, hyperbole, with the total data consists of 48 (forty-eight) data with a percentage of 100%. From the total data, metaphor found as many as 12 (twelve) data with percentage (25%), simile found as many as 5 (five) data with percentage (10, 42%), personification found as many as 12 (twelve) data with percentage (25%), hyperbole found as many as 19 (nineteen) data with percentage (39, 58%). Almost all Westlife songs are about love that uses hyperbole so that the language used is perfect, beautiful, easy to understand, and makes things sound more dramatic, especially for couples who are in love.

Abstract

This study deals with Psychological Personality of the Main Character in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars. In analyzing the data, the writer applies two theoretical approaches, namely intrinsic and extrinsic approaches. In this thesis psychological discipline is applied to analyze personality in the novel. The Thesis applies qualitative descriptive where the focus of this analysis are to find out the kind of personality of the main character portrayed in John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars and the impact of the main character’s personality change. The result of this analysis shows that there are 4 (four) types of personality, they are Introvert Thinking Type, Introvert Feeling Type, Introvert Sensing Type, Introvert Intuiting Type which are possessed by the main character.

Abstract

This is a review of reading comprehension theories from published articles. This theoretical review differs its content by showing reading complexities which is viewed from the perspective of its readers, text’s, and cognitive process. Readers individual differences are highly affect reading comprehension process as it can be also the source of its complexity by the factors of attitude, habit, and linguistics proficiency (Cassanave: 1988, Mcmaster: K.L., Espin, C.A., Van den Broek: 2014). On the other side, texts as the mediator of reader and writer interaction in reading process as also play an important factor in turning reading to be complex process, genre, content, format, and degree of difficulty are sub-factors that affect the complexity of reading in readers mind (Mcmaster, K.L., Espin, C.S., Van den broek; 2014). However, as the motor of reading process, cognitive activities are also play its important role started from decoding, translation, schemata, questioning, and metacognition process are closely affect reading comprehension process. As mainly composed from published article, this review focus to articles which are published on the year of 2000 and above but for a better result of reviews this theoretical review is taken Cassanave research result which was published on 1988 and Van den Broek research result which was published on 1999.

Abstract

This thesis deals with a conflict of an autistic character in Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The problems of the study are, the kinds of conflict, the causes of the conflict, and the impact of conflict on Christopher, as the main character in Mark Haddon’s novel. This thesis applies the qualitative research method. Christoper’s internal conflict is suffering from Asperger Syndrome as an autism spectrum disorder which in turn affects his overall behavior because the autism he suffers limits his actions and thoughts. He uses his normative way of making sense of his surrounding and seeks the mysterious death of the dog whereas Christopher’s external conflict such as man against. man and man against the society. This story emphasizes the different perspective that tells about what the main character gets through compared to people in general. He gets through various trials, gains confidence in his abilities and slowly changes to be more self-sufficient.
