Abstract

In designing the Riau Island Network backbone province, it uses Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Optical Transport Network (OTN) which cover 7 city districts consisting of 13 segments of 7 DWDM OTN and none Optical Land Amplifier (OLA) sites. From the design and backbone network simulation results, it was found that the value of Optical Link Power Budget (OLPB) < 50 dBm, where this is an ideal value for deploying a DWDM OTN backbone network, and the range of values for Optical Signal Noise Ratio (OSNR) ranges from 20 dBm < OSNR < 40, and also have an ideal Optical Rise Time Budget (ORTB) value < 60 ps dBm, which is the ideal value of OSNR, and also has a margin segment system > 7 dB

Abstract

The analysis of mercury (Hg) in the sediments river of the Aek Gantang’s river in Hutabargot District, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra has been conducted. The objective of this research is to determine the Hg content in river sediments to understand its pollution potential. The method used is observational, and data analysis is performed using qualitative descriptive analysis. The Hg content analysis was conducted using the USEPA 3050B/USEPA245.7 method. The parameters used are based on ANZECC/ARMCANZ with a threshold value of 0.15-1.0 ppm. The Hg content obtained in the river sediments at the Aek Kaporas location, before any gold mining activity, was 0.042 ppm, while at the downstream location after gold mining activities in Aek Gantang, it was 0.203 ppm. The results show that small-scale mining activities can increase the Hg content in river sediments when compared to the standards.

Abstract

As one of the major urban growth centers in Indonesia, the city of Medan faces significant environmental challenges, including rising temperatures, declining air quality, and limited green open spaces in residential areas. This study examines the influence of landscape vegetation on thermal comfort in Royal Sumatera Housing as part of efforts to realize energy-efficient buildings. The research uses a descriptive qualitative method through observation and the measurement of temperature, humidity, and wind speed within the housing area. The analysis reveals that vegetation such as trees, shrubs, herbs, and bushes positively contributes to reducing temperature and improving thermal comfort, although humidity levels in some areas still exceed ideal standards. Cooler and more consistent wind speeds are also observed in areas with dense vegetation. These findings emphasize the importance of strategic landscape planning in creating thermally comfortable and energy-efficient environments in tropical residential areas.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of Green Open Space (GOS) and artificial air conditioning on air quality in the J. City Johor residential area, Medan. The research was conducted through observational methods by measuring temperature, humidity, and wind speed over seven consecutive days in three different zones: GOS, indoor areas, and outdoor areas. The results show that although indoor temperatures generally fall within the standard thermal comfort range (24–27 °C), humidity levels often exceed the recommended standard (>60%), particularly during midday and afternoon hours. This study highlights the importance of optimal GOS planning and adequate ventilation systems to ensure healthy and comfortable air quality in tropical residential environments.

Abstract

Al-Osmani Mosque in Medan, a legacy of the Deli Sultanate, is examined for its unique blend of Malay Deli architecture with Indian, Chinese, Spanish, and Middle Eastern influences. This study employs direct observation and comparative study with Azizi Mosque to analyze the application of Malay architectural elements within Al-Osmani. The main problem addressed is identifying which elements demonstrate the persistence of Malay features amidst prevailing foreign influences. The proposed solution is a detailed identification of distinctive colors, motifs, and ornaments typical of Malay architecture within the mosque. The findings indicate that despite cultural amalgamation, the dominance of golden yellow, floral and faunal motifs, and traditional ornamentation maintain the mosque’s strong Malay identity.

Abstract

A healthy house is one that can fulfill the need for a healthy and comfortable living environment. This study aims to evaluate renovated houses in the Citraland Gama City residential area in Medan. The method used in this research is a descriptive qualitative approach, by evaluating the post-renovation condition of the houses based on three aspects of healthy housing comfort: lighting, temperature & humidity, and sound. The results of the study show that the renovated houses in Citraland Gama City meet the technical requirements of a healthy home, including adequate lighting, sound control, and thermal comfort. The conclusion of the study indicates that two variables (lighting and sound control) fall into the category of highly suitable for a healthy home, while one variable (thermal comfort) is categorized as suitably meeting the requirements of a healthy home.

Abstract

The development of the culinary industry in Indonesia plays an important role in the national economy. The development of the culinary coffee drink industry can also be seen in the many constructions of cafes or coffee shops. The cafe that is often found is a cafe with a luxurious feel so that it is expensive to maintain. For this reason, the concept of Industrial Architecture is a concept that emphasizes functional and efficient aspects by using unfinished materials but still considering design aesthetics, so as to reduce costs incurred. This research was conducted to see the application of industrial architectural characteristics to cafe buildings by conducting literature studies and linking them to case studies. The selected case study is the Kallia Cafe Cafe building, from this case study it will be analyzed by linking the case study data with the characteristics of Industrial Architecture. From this analysis, the results obtained are the application of the characteristics of the industrial architectural concept at Kallia Cafe in terms of exterior and interior.

Abstract

The rapid growth of development and business in Medan City has driven the use of billboards as an effective promotional medium. In the area of Jalan Putri Hijau Merak Jingga to Jalan Perintis Kemerdekaan, store signage billboards appear densely packed and disorganized. This study aims to analyze the visual quality and visibility of billboards in that area in relation to the buildings. The research uses a qualitative method, with data collected directly on-site and analyzed using a research formula consisting of variables such as proportion and scale, color, harmony and contrast, and viewing distance. The results show that the visual quality of the billboards in this area is low and does not align with existing visual aesthetic theories for signage on buildings. However, in terms of visibility (viewing distance), the billboards are considered to comply with existing theory. This study highlights the importance of proper billboard placement aligned with visual aesthetics and functional clarity.

Abstract

Medan is a city with significant tourism potential, particularly through its preserved colonial and Deli Sultanate heritage buildings. One prominent example is Maimun Palace, which remains intact but has yet to attract an optimal number of visitors. This study aims to enhance Medan’s tourism potential by applying the sense of place theory, examined through circulation patterns, building image, and spatial comfort. A qualitative-descriptive method was employed, supported by interviews with selected respondents. The findings are expected to strengthen the role of tourism in preserving the city's historical architecture.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Thermal comfort is a key indicator of residential environmental quality, particularly in tropical regions characterized by high temperatures and fluctuating humidity. This study aims to analyze the influence of green open space (RTH) on thermal comfort in the TASBI 1 Housing Complex in Medan. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed over five consecutive days, involving measurements of air temperature, relative humidity, and wind speed in two zones with differing levels of vegetation density. The results show that the presence of RTH significantly reduces the average daytime temperature by 5.3°C and increases relative humidity in the afternoon by 7.2%. Zones with dense vegetation exhibit cooler and more humid microclimates compared to areas with minimal RTH. Additionally, residents in high-RTH zones reported lower usage of air conditioning, indicating the role of vegetation in promoting energy efficiency. This research highlights the importance of integrating green elements into residential planning to create more comfortable, energy-efficient, and sustainable living environments.
