ELITE: Journal of English Language and Literature is a periodic academic publication that serves as the appropriate link to exchange any worthwhile and marvelous ideas in the realm of English language and literature. ELITE was established for the purpose of reviving and perpetuating academic excellence for the sake of the common good. On the other hand, Elite, standing for English Language and Literature, is aimed at undertaking its primary mission to promote and advance English language and literature in the national and international scope. The managing editors and the editor-in-chief will gratefully receive any kinds of theoretical writings, ethnographic research findings, and any other kinds of publications with constructive ideas which are supposed to be able to rectify any socio-cultural problems in a broader sense and resolve any complicated problems in human and community development, as well as the textbook reviews and any other kinds of exploratory and explanatory research findings. The contents are not necessarily in conformity with the editors’ viewpoints. The texts are typed using the Microsoft Office Word application, selecting Times New Roman 12 font size with 1,5 line spacing. The whole documents are submitted in soft copy. The length of the article contains at least 3000 words or more, embodying the scientific principles. The abstract should be attached, containing no more than 250 words. The footnotes should be inserted at the bottom of the document with the appropriate cardinal numbers. The references are arranged in such a way that the authors are ordered alphabetically, in accordance with the sample references in this edition. ELITE is published biannually, in June and December.

Abstract

This research investigated the Avatar movie by James Cameron to show the symbolicexpressions of white supremacy towards Native Americans. The opposition resulted in a crisis of hegemony and in the end, the class subordinate resisted, this is what Gramsci meant as the War of Position. This movie shows that supremacy in the way of hegemony is more successful to the way of domination, but the hegemony and dominance were not successful when the allies carried out the opposition.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the violating of cooperative principles presented in the “Alice in Wonderland” movie script. This research used the descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the utterances among the characters in the “Alice in Wonderland” movie script. The data were collected by searching and downloading the movie, watching the movie, reading the movie script, coding the data, re-watching, and re-reading, capturing of image and data reduction. The method of analyzing data consists of presenting the data into conversation and image, describing the data, interpreting data, and making conclusions to answer the research questions. The result of this research shows there are 18 violations of the maxims, they are: the violating maxim of quantity is 8 data, it happens because the speaker gives excessive or little information; the violating maxim of quality is 4 data, it happens because the speaker gives untruth information or say something lie; the violating maxim of relevance are 4 data, it happens because the speaker gives irrelevant information; the violating maxim of manner are 2 data, it happens because the speaker gives unclear or ambiguous information. The most violated maxim is the maxim of quantity.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze Moana Disney movie in term of analytical of residual patriarchal ideology by using feminist criticism: women as a reader that produced by Elaine Showalter and found the hide messages including the stereotype and patriarchal system that is undiscovered by the men as the author of the workthat is Moana Disney movie. The method which is used in this study is the qualitative method and in descriptive form. The source of data that was obtained in this study is Moana Disney movie. The data was collected through the process of watching, pausing and interpreting all aspects of the movie that relate to the problem that was analyzed. The writer found that the image of women in the movie is imagined more active, strong, and brave to show the resistance of the stereotype and patriarchal system that used in literary work. However, the patriarchal system and stereotype were still found and existed in the movie throughsome aspects that appear after the feminist reading is done. It happened because of the influence of postmodernism which is the era of this movie is published as the result that applying feminist reading and postmodernism images of women in this movie still presented as inferior to men.

Abstract

This research used Short Story by Lindsay Buroker as the object material and Slang Word Formation by George Yule’s as a theory. This research aimed to analyze what is the slang word formation in Ice Cracker II (The Emperor’s Edge 1.5) Short Story. This research used a qualitative research method. The result of the research shows that there are 11 data found, they are Coinage consists of 2 data, Compounding consists of 2 data, Blending consists of 3 data, Clipping consist of 1 data, Derivation consists of 2 data, and Multiple Process consist of 1 data. The most dominant of slang word formation is Blending. Blending is a combination of two separate word forms to make a single new word term.

Abstract

This study aims to find out the types of figurative language and the most dominant types of figurative language that used in short stories God Sees the Truth but Waits, Esarhaddon, King of Assyria, and Too Dear by Leo Tolstoy. The methodology of this study used descriptive qualitative method because the data are in form of words and utterance rather than the number. The source of data in this study is three short stories of Leo Tolstoy that taken from storage.cloversites.com. Some techniques in analyzing the data consist of classifying the data that need to be analyzed described the data and interpreting the data based on Leech’s categories and the last made the conclusion to answer the research question. This study used the theory of figurative language based on Geoffrey Leech’s categories. Based on the findings, there are four types of figurative language that was found in the short stories, they are hyperbole (5 data), metaphor (2 data), Litotes (2 data), and Simile (10 data). The most dominant figurative language used is a simile for 10 data.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze Lady Gaga’s song lyrics in terms of pragmatic study. The problem concerns what are the types of entailment in those song lyrics. The objective of this research is to identify the types of entailment in seven song lyrics of Lady Gaga. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. Therefore, the data in this research are in the form of utterances conveyed by Lady Gaga. The source of the data is seven song lyrics of Lady Gaga. The data were collected by identifying, reading, coding, and classifying the data and then analyzed by presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the data. This research showed that among four types of entailment, the data involved all the types of entailment in Lady Gaga’s song lyrics. One-way entailment (5 times), Two-way entailment (4 times) Negative entailment (2 times), and Metaphorical entailment (9 times). Thus, those types of entailment are found in seven song lyrics of Lady Gaga.

Abstract

This research clarifies Postmodernism as World View in The Golden Compass movie by Chris Weitz. The researcher applies Descriptive qualitative methods. An analysis is done by applying the Genetic structuralism theory by Lucien Goldmann to find the authors’ world view as a Trans-individual subject in the movie which can be categorized as a postmodern work. The research found that: World View in The Golden Compass movie can be divided into three parts; (1) The World View of God; the existence of divine reality is represented through Lyra Belacqua, Pantalaimon, and Lord Asriel’s research. (2) In the World View of Human, there is a reaction against to modernism system done by Lyra Belacqua, The Gyptian, and The Witches, in which the resistance is based on the concept of Egalitarianismas efforts to realize postmodernism ideals. (3) In the World View of Nature, there is an Anthropomorphism concept represented by the relationship between Lyra Belacqua and Iorek Byrnison characters. So, it may be concluded that the movie is one of the efforts by authors, Phillip Pullman and Chris Weitz to create history and to change the social structure by using their ideology and aspirations as the part of Trans-individual subject.

Abstract

This thesis is intended to analyze the violation of Grice’s maxim which is found in the utterances of conversations between characters in Spider-Man: Homecoming movie by Jon Watts. The research question of this study is formulated: “What are the violations of Grice’s maxim found in Spider-Man: Homecoming movie?”. The objective of this study is to find out the violations of Grice’s maxim in the Spider-Man: Homecoming movie. Techniques in analyzing the data consist of describing the context of the data, presenting the data into conversations and images, explaining the data, and making the conclusion Based on the findings and discussion, the researcher concludes that all of the four types of Grice’s maxim violation are found in Spider-Man: Homecoming movie. Those are the violation of quantity maxim, the violation of quality maxim, the violation of relation maxim, and the violation of manner maxim. After data reduction, it can be seen that the number of the four types of Grice’s maxim violation in the movie is 20 turns. The violation of the quantity maxim is 5 turns. Violation of quality maxim is 5 turns. Violation of relation maxim is 5 turns. Violation of manner maxim is 5 turns. The dominant violation from Grice’s maxim type is the violation of maxim relation. Theviolation of Grice’s maxim in the movie is created in order to make the conversation seems natural as real life and not too formal for the speaker and the addressee.

Abstract

This study is aimed to analyze The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde in terms of analytical psychology. The problem concerns revealing the Shadow of Lord Henry's character which is portrayed in The Picture of Dorian Gray. The objective of this study is to analyze the shadow of Lord Henry's character in The Picture of Dorian Gray. This study used the descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this study is a novel by Oscar Wilde, titled The Picture of Dorian Gray which is published in 1890. The data were collected through the process of previewing, reading, and annotating and then the writer analyzed those data by using the theory of psychoanalysis by Carl Gustav Jung. It is found that Lord Henry is dominated by his shadow, as he cannot balance the other archetypes in his personality. He cannot define his true self because his shadow keeps haunting him, or in other words, Lord Henry’s self is the Shadow. Lord Henry’s shadow is manifested into Envious, Hypocrisy, Fear, Misogyny, and Machiavellian which is portrayed in The Picture of Dorian Gray. The other archetypes also play important role in arousing Lord Henry’s shadow such as Persona and Anima. The worst thing about Lord Henry’s shadow that it is not only affecting himself but also affecting another character that is Dorian Gray, where it thrusts and motivates Lord Henry to give destructive influence over him and eventually awakes Dorian’s own shadow.

Abstract

Black English is a variety of English spoken by many African Americans. Most people consider that Black English as a badly spoken version of Standard English. Therefore, this is the reason why the syntactic feature of Black English important to analyze. The knowledge about the syntactic feature of Black English may results that people will understand and recognize Black English. This research is aimed at describing the syntactic feature of Black English that Alice Walker used in her novel and to find the most dominant feature which occurs in the novel. This research used the syntactic analysis based on Lisa J. Green’s perspective. Then, the data were analyzed using the descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected by downloading, reading, classifying, and coding the data then analyzed by presenting the collected data, describing the use of the syntactic feature, and making a conclusion. The results of this research are the researcherfound 10 syntactic features of Black English used in The Color Purple novel, they are; multiple negations, negative inversion, zero auxiliary, lack of subject-verb agreement, ain’t as negated auxiliary, lack of auxiliary in wh-question and yes-no question, existential it, aspectual be and lack of genetive-‘s.
