Abstract

This research aims to explore the role of women in the environment from the perspective of ecofeminism. The researcher uses Karen J. Warren's theory of ecofeminism to determine the level of concern and the role of women in environmental issues. This research employs qualitative methods. The data source for this research is the 'Ainbo' movie. The results show that elements of capitalism, which pursue profit through the relentless exploitation of natural resources and labor, are visible in the practice of illegal gold mining in the Amazon. These activities cause significant environmental damage, and women are often the chief victims of their negative effects. This capitalist system has received strong criticism from the women's movement because, besides promoting environmental degradation, it also exacerbates the oppression of women in the Amazon forest area. The researcher concludes that nature and women have a close relationship, with both often experiencing exploitation. Male characters are depicted as representatives of capitalism who exploit natural resources for personal gain. In contrast, women are depicted as having a deep closeness to nature, reflecting their feminine principles, which emphasize protecting and saving the environment. The role of women as saviors of the environment stands out in contrast to the destructive actions carried out by male capitalists.

Abstract

The research discusses the denotative and connotative meanings in the movie The Hustle, based on Barthes’s theory. The objective of this research is to describe how denotative and connotative meanings are conveyed in the film The Hustle, utilizing Barthes’s theory. To support the research, the researcher adds additional theory retrieved from Dickins (2019) to identify the types of connotative meanings that appear. The descriptive qualitative method is used in this study. The source of data is based on the Hustle movie. The data was gathered by downloading, watching, reading, identifying, and coding. The data were analyzed by presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the data analysis results. As a result of the analysis, it can be concluded that in the Hustle movie, denotation describes the literal meaning of the things the researcher found in this movie, and connotation describes the underlying, deeper messages. The use of denotation and connotation words reveals the characters’ traits, indicating that Penny’s personality is that of a casual person. In contrast, Josephine’s personality is more formal, preferring to speak correctly. The researcher also found that the Hustle movie features several scenes that perpetuate stereotypes. The picture illustrates a stereotype prevalent in a particular country. Messages or feelings that a film evokes cause the movie’s audience to experience a range of emotions while watching it.

Abstract

The importance of self-control in society is to direct someone in a better direction, avoid committing crimes and can make someone get a new identity. This research used psychoanalysis theory of Sigmund Freud especially the id, ego and superego. The methodology of this research was qualitative descriptive, the data come from the movie entitle The Wrath of  Becky. Data for this research was collected by watching, taking notes, identifying and then analyzing by presenting, describing and interpreting the data, as well as concluding the results of the analysis. From the results of the analysis, researcher found that the movie has a psychoanalytic aspect to the main character Becky, so that this movie has aspects of id, ego and superego. Becky's self-control was successful because the researcher found that Becky's personality was dominated by the role of the superego which can accommodate the desires of the id so that Becky did not take actions that were detrimental to herself and the people around her. Becky chose to obey the rules and the norms that exist in society. Of the three aspects of Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis, it turned out that they are all covered in the movie  The Wrath of Becky. Becky clearly reflects these aspects through her dialogue, facial expressions and her actions. Based on the above results, it can be concluded that Becky's self-control can make her not commit the crime and also that self-control makes Becky look like a teenager in general who does not have mental disorders.

Abstract

Heroes do not always have to be perfect; they can also have flaws that then become their strengths. This research discusses the conventions and inventions of fantasy formula in the movie Rise of the Guardians (2012), focusing on the hero, the other, helpers and guides, the call, the journey, the treasure, and the transformation. The research method employed is a descriptive qualitative approach. The research reveals that the movie incorporates both convention and invention in its fantasy formula. The conventions are: 1) The 'the other' character is Pitch. Howard is depicted with a pale face and is always seen wearing black clothes. 2) The ‘the wise old man’ character is Man in the Moon. Howard provides guidance to the heroes in the form of advice. 3) The ‘treasure’ is the return of the children's belief in the guardians. According to Howard, treasures are sometimes intangible. 4) The ‘transformation’, by Howard, after getting the treasure, and after fighting alongside the other guardians, Jack turns into the hero he should be. While the inventions are: 1) ‘The hero’, not by Howard, the heroes in the movie are not desperately unhappy and experience their lives as a stultifying world. 2) ‘The call’, not by Howard, Jack receives the call but lacks insight, courage, or endurance. 3) ‘The Journey’, not by Howard, the heroes do not leave the original world nor cross over to a mysterious one.

Abstract

The narration about the bond between humans and nature in literary works is an element that is quite easy to find, but unfortunately this narrative does not seem to mean anything other than to evoke and dissolve the reader in the form of familiarize.  The ecological perspective in Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's novel "The Little Prince", which tells the journey of a young prince across different planets, emphasizes the complicated relationship between humans and the environment. Between care, responsibility, and interconnectedness between all beings. The findings reveal that "The Little Prince" advocates environmental awareness that challenges materialistic attitudes and is often negligent in adulthood. By depicting the childlike wonder of the prince and the deep emotional connection with nature, the text encourages readers to adopt a more empathetic and holistic view of their environment. This perspective is particularly relevant in contemporary discussions about ecological sustainability and the moral obligation that humans have towards the planet. Through qualitative descriptive analysis, this research highlights the importance of fostering a sense of concern and appreciation for the environment, as articulated in the prince's reflection. Ultimately, the study states that "The Little Prince" serves as a reminder of the need for humans to connect with nature, advocating for a shift in perception that aligns with ecological principles and promotes a more sustainable future. Using a shallow ecology approach, this exploration not only enriches the literary interpretation of the text, but also contributes to the ongoing dialogue about human ethics and responsibility towards the environment.

Abstract

This study generally aims to describe the strategy of modern Batak and Christian sects (Charismatic churches) as the subordinate agents to achieve a recognition of their faith from Batak Toba communities who accepted Ulos and cultural practices as the symbolic capital and the cultural identity in the field of Christianity. The scope of this study focuses on the artistic field and religious identity of Batak Toba, which is depicted by reactions of Batak people who still recognize Ulos as part of the religious instrument at conventional churches, as shown in the mailing list comments, Silaban Brotherhood. This study will use ethnographic qualitative approaches and research literature. To answer this issue, Bourdieu’s perspective theory will take control of drawing identity as the mental representation of objectives toward practices committed by social agents and as the subjectivity shown by symbolic manipulation strategies. The construction of identity is produced by the existence of the power field and the occurrence of symbolic capital amongst social agents.

Abstract

This research aims to discuss Account in The Devil All the Time movie script, based on Scott and Layman's theory on the Justification and excuses aspects. Data was collected through searching, downloading, reading, watching, and coding, and the data collected was analyzed through several steps; presenting, describing, interpreting, classifying, and concluding the results of this research. The results showed that the account exists and is applied by the character. The researcher finds several types of accounts, namely justification 5, defeasibility 3, scapegoating 3, and biological 2. One type of account was not found, namely an accident. In the finding, the researcher finds that every excuse contains justification but every justification does not contain an excuse. Moreover, the justification aspect is more dominantly used because the character always justifies the bad behavior of others or themselves. In excuses, the defeasibility aspect is used because many murders are committed based on victims who deserve to be killed. The scapegoating aspect is used by the character to accuse others of the mistakes he made so as not to become a suspect of his actions and the biological is the last factor that causes Account's behavior in this movie script.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the language metafunctions in Nick Vujicic's Hear the Heart speech using Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) theory by M.A.K. Halliday and supported by other Systemic Functional Linguists theories. This study employed the qualitative method. 499 data clauses are investigated in this study. The result shows that in terms of ideational metafunction, the dominant process used by Nick was the mental process (33,07%) which indicates that he involved his senses to represent his experiences of the outer world as well as the inner world of his thoughts and feelings. In interpersonal metafunction, declarative mood (72,34%), high value of modality (38,50%), and second personal pronoun (58,62%) are the most frequently used in the speech, which shows his high commitment and certainty of the information he uttered and also to show his care and respect for the audience; thus, a close intimate relationship is maintained. Through textual metafunction, which is dominated by topical theme (52,70%), Nick attempts to get the audience's attention to focus on the message of what is being said and gives many statements to tell the audience about his experiences in life. To conclude, by using the three metafunctions, Nick could organize his language choice properly to create meaning and achieve his purpose in the speech.
