ELITE: Journal of English Language and Literature is a periodic academic publication that serves as the appropriate link to exchange any worthwhile and marvelous ideas in the realm of English language and literature. ELITE was established for the purpose of reviving and perpetuating academic excellence for the sake of the common good. On the other hand, Elite, standing for English Language and Literature, is aimed at undertaking its primary mission to promote and advance English language and literature in the national and international scope. The managing editors and the editor-in-chief will gratefully receive any kinds of theoretical writings, ethnographic research findings, and any other kinds of publications with constructive ideas which are supposed to be able to rectify any socio-cultural problems in a broader sense and resolve any complicated problems in human and community development, as well as the textbook reviews and any other kinds of exploratory and explanatory research findings. The contents are not necessarily in conformity with the editors’ viewpoints. The texts are typed using the Microsoft Office Word application, selecting Times New Roman 12 font size with 1,5 line spacing. The whole documents are submitted in soft copy. The length of the article contains at least 3000 words or more, embodying the scientific principles. The abstract should be attached, containing no more than 250 words. The footnotes should be inserted at the bottom of the document with the appropriate cardinal numbers. The references are arranged in such a way that the authors are ordered alphabetically, in accordance with the sample references in this edition. ELITE is published biannually, in June and December.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the form of conversational implicature in the Interview between Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. The subject of this research is Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. The object of the research is the utterances contained in the Interview between Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. The data was collected through searching, downloading, reading script, note taking, classifying, and coding the data to achieve a complete conclusion in the form of conversational implicature in the interview between Oprah Winfrey and Meghan Markle. The results of the study show three forms, namely satire (6 data), protest (3 data), and statement (14 data). Meghan uses this form because she doesn't want to be silent about the problems she has with the royals who played an active role in perpetuating lies about her and Prince Harry.

Abstract

This research is a pragmatic approach study of an analysis of Non-Observance the Maxim in Knives Out Movie Script. The objectives of this researcher are to find out the types of Non-Observance a Maim in Movie scripts and to find out the dominant types of Non-Observance used by all the character’s utterances. The researcher used the content analysis qualitative method to describe and analyze the selected of Non-Observance which are watching movies and then classifies them according to Paul Grice’s concept types of Non-Observance. The researcher used content analysis which focuses on classifying the types of Non-Observance and the dominant types of Non-Observance in Knives Out movie carried out by all the characters. The researcher found that the characters use all types of Non-Observance. The first flounting there are Quality (3), Quantity (8), Relation (1) Manner (-). Second is Violation, they are Quality (4), Quantity (3), Relation (1), and Manner (-). Third, is Opting Out, they are {Quality (-) Quantity (1) Relation (1) Manner (-), Forth is Infringing, they are Linguistics Performance (-), Culture Impairment (-) Cognitive Impairment (1), and the last is Suspending (1) Based on the data above, it reveals that all characters in their utterances dominantly used the Non-Observance of Flounting with 13 data.

Abstract

This study discusses the types and techniques of propaganda in Unthinkable movie scripts. The objective of the study is to describe how propaganda types and techniques are used in Unthinkable movie script. This research uses the descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this study is the script of Unthinkable (2010) movie by Peter Woodward as primary data and an audiovisual movie as secondary data. The data are collected through downloading, reading the dialogue, watching, capturing, selecting, and coding the data based on Ellul's (1965) and Lee & Lee's (1972) theory of propaganda. Meanwhile, the techniques of the data analysis are presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the data. The results show that unthinkable movie has elements of propaganda to take implications for social problems, namely terrorism, and racism. The elements are types and techniques of propaganda. The writer finds agitation, integration, vertical, and horizontal types. These four types are indicated to spread incitement or hatred and instill the doctrine of terrorists against Muslims and bad character for Black people. Then, the writer finds techniques of propaganda, there are name-calling, glittering generality, transfer, plain folks, and card stacking. These five techniques are used to lead public opinion about Muslim and Black people that dangerous to American citizens by presenting bad facts for Muslims as Terrorists and Black people with cruel character by labeling them evil. Then the present fact can support America as the hero of society. The existences of these two elements show that Unthinkable movie contains propaganda.

Abstract

This research discussed how the perlocutionary act is used in the “Look Away” movie script. The objective of this research is to describe the functions of the perlocutionary act of the utterances of the characters in the “Look Away” movie script. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method and the data source of this research is taken from the “Look away” movie script. In this research, there are many data belonging to type two where the content of type two is that what the speaker said is not understood by the listener, usually causing a misunderstanding discourse. But there are also some data belonging to types one; what is the speaker said is understood by the speaker, types three; what is the speaker’s intention was fully or partially understood by the listener, however, the listener did not work in that way, and types four; what is the speaker’s intention was not been understood by the listeners, however, due to the involvement of other attendants in the communication, the speaker’s expected perlocutionary act came true. This research also has similarities between the four types of perlocutionary acts by Qiang (2013) and perlocutionary act and communication and non-linguistic signs in the perlocutionary act in the book “On Perlocutionary Act” by Qiang (2013).

Abstract

This research is about an analyze the illocutionary act in the Light Out movie using the theory of speech act by George Yule. This research focuses on analyzing the utterances of the woman character in the Light Out movie. This research aimed to find out the kinds of illocutionary acts uttered by the woman characters in the Lights Out movie by David F. Sanberg. The researcher used qualitative description because the data will take the form of utterances. The source of data in this research is the Lights Out movie and the data is utterances of the woman character which includes the kinds of illocutionary acts. The technique of data analysis is done by presenting the data, describing the data, and concluding the data. This research found that there are four kinds of illocutionary acts in the Lights Out movie that are representative, directive, commissive, and expressive. The researcher found there are 44 data in this research. There are 17 data from the representative, 17 data from the directive, 6 data from commissive, and 4 data from expressive. The kinds of illocutionary acts that are plenty used in the Lights Out movie are representative speech act and directive speech act and the least used is an expressive speech act.

Abstract

This research aimed to how altruism in action is done by Wade’s main character through Deadpool 2 movie script by Batson theory (1995). Data from altruism in action is grouped by a chart. The researcher thereafter analyzes aspects of altruism based on aspects of liabilities, motive, and benefit. The researcher uses this aspect of liabilities, motive and benefit in the Deadpool 2 movie script analysis becausethe speech about the three aspects falls into the main character. It can be seen as Wade saved Russell from the fire that the Cable did save him from that act, spared aven the death that he looked upon back then, he was willingto sacrifice himself for the safety of others, taking responsibility for what he was responsible. So he had to be done, and that can benefit others. Data analysis shows the main character in the Deadpool 2 movie script.

Abstract

This thesis aims to analyze the personality of the main character reflected in the movie Inside Out by Pete Docter using Sigmund Freud's psychoanalysis studies. This research uses descriptive qualitative research methods. The data source in this study is Inside Out movie which is directed by Pete Docter, as well as articles, books, and theses that can provide information related to this research. Data is collected through watching, taking notes, taking pictures, and identifying. The results showed that in the main character there is Id, Ego, and Superego. Next as in the new students, there will be a directive from the teacher that we must introduce ourselves first so that we can be known in our environment that's what Riley did when entering a new school in San Francisco. Also for the sake of hobbies and support from her parents, he had to rise from the slump and he began to adapt well to her new neighborhood of San Francisco. In this case, the most guided in the main character is compassion, attention, and unyielding. Keywords: Movie, personality, psychoanalysis.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the ethnography of communication, ethnographic components, and how to explain it using the theory proposed by Dell Hymes. This study discussed the settings/scenes, participants, ends, action sequences, keys, elements, instrumentalities, norms, and genres of the communication summarized in the acronym SPEAKING model in Luca movie dialogue. To make it easy for readers to understand, all the categories mentioned were grouped according to the analysis under study. This ethnographic study focuses on communicative competence in society related to its culture. The researcher used qualitative descriptive research methods to describe and interpret objects according to the current situation. The descriptive method is applied in an integrated manner because in analyzing the data, it is presented in a clearer explanation. The researcher then analyzed the dialogue in the Luca movie by using a descriptive qualitative research method. The finding in this movie is a conversational genre is found which generally becomes the human daily conversation. This movie uses language that is easy for the readers to understand because it uses everyday language whose words can be easily understood. The data found in this study include 141 dialogues based on the variety of topics discussed by the participants. In conclusion, the part of the discussion is that the researcher found some data that included several category elements from the ethnography of communication and then made conclusions from the use of ethnography of communication elements in the research findings section.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the formulas of convention and invention in the film “Black Panther”. The problem in this study is what are the new superhero formulas that appear in the Black Panther film. The research method is the qualitative method. Theory Formula from John G. Cawelti's is used to analyze the data. The objective is to describe the superhero formula that appears in the Black Panther film by Ryan Coogler. The data was collected through watching the film, identifying and cataloging. While the technique of data analysis, namely describing, analyzing, interpreting and concluding. This study found new formulas in the Black Panther film, such as; (1) the main character is black, (2) the antagonist has a clear motive, (3) takes place in Africa, (4) the female character is very tough and smart, (5) shows a lot of culture African.

Abstract

ABSTRACT This research aimed to analyze the categories and the function of profanity language in Megan Thee Stallion’s song lyrics by using Andersson Sociolinguistic Theory. This research used Descriptive Qualitative Method. The source of the data in this research is Thot Shit, Savage, and Hot Girl Summer song lyrics by Megan that is published in 2020. The data was collected through listening the song while reading the lyrics as whole part, Identifying the profanity language to the song, Taking notes from the lyrics that show of profanity language in Thot Shit, Savage, and Hot girl Summer song, and Classifying the categories and function of profanity language in Megan Thee Stallion’s song lyrics. This research is analyzed by presenting the data that contain of profanity language in Thot Shit, Savage, and Hot Girl Summer song lyrics, Describing the context of situation of the data, Interpreting the data based on the types and function of profanity language in Megan Thee Stallion’s song lyrics, and Drawing the conclusion. The result of this research shows that most or almost all of the profane expressions in Megan’s song lyrics are dominated in profanity categories. The category of profanity words includes curse and scorn conveyed on the other person, here the interlocutor who hears the words of Megan’s song can feel insulted because they humble themselves and defame someone. Profanity language in Megan’s song lyrics consists of Expletive Profane, Abusive Profane, Humorous Profane, and Auxiliary Profane. Keyword: Sociolinguistic, Taboo Words, Swear Words, Profanity
