ELITE: Journal of English Language and Literature is a periodic academic publication that serves as the appropriate link to exchange any worthwhile and marvelous ideas in the realm of English language and literature. ELITE was established for the purpose of reviving and perpetuating academic excellence for the sake of the common good. On the other hand, Elite, standing for English Language and Literature, is aimed at undertaking its primary mission to promote and advance English language and literature in the national and international scope. The managing editors and the editor-in-chief will gratefully receive any kinds of theoretical writings, ethnographic research findings, and any other kinds of publications with constructive ideas which are supposed to be able to rectify any socio-cultural problems in a broader sense and resolve any complicated problems in human and community development, as well as the textbook reviews and any other kinds of exploratory and explanatory research findings. The contents are not necessarily in conformity with the editors’ viewpoints. The texts are typed using the Microsoft Office Word application, selecting Times New Roman 12 font size with 1,5 line spacing. The whole documents are submitted in soft copy. The length of the article contains at least 3000 words or more, embodying the scientific principles. The abstract should be attached, containing no more than 250 words. The footnotes should be inserted at the bottom of the document with the appropriate cardinal numbers. The references are arranged in such a way that the authors are ordered alphabetically, in accordance with the sample references in this edition. ELITE is published biannually, in June and December.

Abstract

This research aims to find out how Account is described by 12 characters in Murder on the Orient Express Movie script on Justification and Excuses aspects. The researcher used descriptive qualitative as a research method. The source of data in this research was taken from primary data, namely the script for the film Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie and Michael Green which was taken from www.scripts.com and secondary data were taken from audiovisual in the film Murder on the Orient Express. The researcher collected data by downloading, reading, watching, and coding the data. The data analysis technique was done by presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the results of this research. The results of this research indicate that account is actually applied by the antagonists to avoid being accused of being the killer of one of the train passengers. The researcher found 11 data containing elements of Account, which included aspects of Justification and Excuses. In Excuses, the accident aspect is the most dominant because this murder is based on past events, then the scapegoating aspect is accusing other people of doing the act so as not to be accused and the Defeasibility aspect is the last factor that causes Account’s behavior in this Movie script.

Abstract

This research discusses the repair of trust made by Facebook regarding the Cambridge Analytica Scandal based on the trust-repair discourse model established by Fuoli and Paradis. The objective of this research is to find out how the trust violation repaired by Mark Zuckerberg as CEO of Facebook. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research was taken from the discourse uploaded by Mark Zuckerberg on March 22, 2018. The data was collected through reading intensively, identifying, and classifying based on communicative action models of Fuoli and Paradis. The data was analyzed by presenting, describing, interpreting and concluding the data to answer the research question of this research. Researchers found that Mark Zuckerberg as CEO of Facebook adopted strategies such as neutralizing the negative and emphasizing the positive to improve the company's trust from three aspects, namely ability, integrity, and benevolence. Zuckerberg adopts a lot emphasize the positive strategy to improve trust from the aspect of ability. He mainly adopts the strategy of emphasizing the positive to show that they are capable in eliminating risks. Meanwhile, in terms of integrity and benevolence, Zuckerberg uses a combination of emphasize the positive and neutralize the negative strategy. By emphasizing the positive, Zuckerberg intends to build an honest image for the company. With neutralizing the negative, he tries to lessen the negative impact of the accusation. Through the use of this strategy Zuckerberg rebuilt and renegotiated the company's trust.

Abstract

This research is intended to describe the use of expressive and representative utterances Hotel Transylvania movie script. The research question of this research is, namely: how expressive and representative utterances are used in the Hotel Transylvania movie script. The research methodology used in this research is the descriptive qualitative method. The source of data in this research is Hotel Transylvania movie script and Hotel Transylvania movie. To collect the data the researcher used some steps: downloading the movie script and the movie, reading and watching repeatedly and comprehensively the movie and script, and identifying conversations that contain expressive and representative utterances found in Hotel Transylvania. The results of this research are described as follows: The researcher divided the data into two, the first is data expressive utterances and the second data is representative utterances. The researcher found 32 data of expressive utterances, they were welcome/greeting (9 data), thanking (7 data), condoling (3 data), deplore (5 data), and apologizing (8 data) and there are 20 data of representative utterances which included reporting (4 data), complaining (4 data), stating (5 data), concluding (3 data), and suggesting (4 data). The expressive utterance has more data because most of the characters express how they met and parted with someone at the hotel, thanking, saying sorry, expressing sympathy, expressing dislike, and congratulating.   Keywords: Speech Act, Illocutionary Act, Expressive, Representative

Abstract

The data of this research taken from  the lyrics of the song by Bruno Mars from several songs entitled Treasure, Just The Way You Are, It Will Rain and Marry You as an object. The researcher uses qualitative descriptive design because the data and research question models are descriptive. This research data collected through downloading, reading, identifying, coding and classifying. The results of this research shown that in the lyrics of the song by Bruno Mars, there are aspects of the mental process namely aspects of thinking, wanting, feeling and seeing and from these findings researcher found 11 data containing the aspects of mental processes, it can be seen from this research that aspects of thinking are more dominant, namely found 5 data, aspect of wanting 3 data, aspect of seeing 2 data and aspect of feeling only found 1 data. The mental process aspect is determined based on the senser, process and phenomenon which are implicit criteria to determining the use of the mental process aspects itself.

Abstract

This study tried to analyze black and white women’s depiction in the novel Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker (2013) written by Jennifer Chiaverini. This study used a descriptive qualitative method by approaching the data from hegemony perspective. It is assumed that the depiction of black and white women in the novel was having an ideological power in order to strengthen white supremacy as well as black stereotype. The sources of data in this study consisted of primary data; the text of the novel Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker and secondary data was taken from the memoir of Elizabeth Keckley; Behind the Scene: Thirty Years a Slave, or, Four Years in the White House. The researcher collected the data by reading, take-noting, identifying, and grouping the data. The data analysis technique is describing, interpreting, analyzing, and concluding the analysis. This study found that, first, the depiction of black and white women. The black woman is depicted as skilled and beautiful in the beauty standard of white women; White woman is depicted as a beautiful woman who is good at politics, second, the relation of those women in the context of position; Mistress vs Servant and Deceiver vs Deceived. Mistress is depicted through the white woman character, while the servant is depicted through the black character. The deceiver is depicted through the white woman, while the deceived is a black woman. This study claimed that the novel Mrs. Lincoln’s Dressmaker is a medium to build and maintain the white ideology by rewriting the black memoir.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze racism in The Man Who Knew Infinity movie used Paradies, Harris, and Anderson’s theory. The Man Who Knew Infinity that released in 2016 is a film directed by Matthew Brown that features the character of a genius mathematician from India named Srinivasa Ramanujan who wants to publish his formula about mathematics in Trinity College. As an Indian, Ramanujan experienced various acts of racism committed by the British, both mentally and physically. This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The data collected through four steps, such as watching, screenshotting, note taking, and identifying the data. The result of this study showed that the main character experienced racism because of his race and nationality. The kinds of racism that the main character experienced namely stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Keywords: Racism, stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination

Abstract

This research aims to discuss Account in The Devil All the Time movie script,based on Scott and Layman’s (1968) theory on the Justification and Excusesaspects. Data was collected through searching, downloading, reading, watching,and coding and the data collected was analyzed through several steps; presenting,describing, interpreting, classifying and concluding the results of this research.The results showed that the account really exists and is applied by the character.The researcher finds several types of accounts, namely justification 5,defeasibility 3, scapegoating 3, and biological 2. One type of account was notfound, namely an accident. In the finding, the researcher finds that every excusecontains justification but every justification does not contain an excuse.Moreover, the justification aspect is more dominantly used because the characteralways justifies bad behavior of others or themselves. In excuses, thedefeasibility aspect is used because many murders are committed on the basis ofvictims who deserve to be killed. The scapegoating aspect is used by thecharacter to accuse others of the mistakes he made so as not to become a suspectof his actions and the biological is the last factor that causes Account’s behaviorin this Movie script.

Abstract

Movies have been a platform to picture every human-related activity. The movie is not a mere depiction but a reflection of social life. The idea is to set movies as a manifestation of social life. A Bug’s Life (1998) is an animated movie directed by John Lasseter which followed the storyline of Seven Samurai (1954) a movie by Akira Kurosawa. A bug’s life is a manifestation of social life, it contains the struggle for power, social dynamics, and oppression. This study aimed to analyze the depiction of the strategy of power by Pierre Bourdieu in A Bug’s life and focused only on the strategy-based practical action. Bourdieu has classified the strategy into two segments, those are reproduction strategy and reconversion strategy. The author used three variables to analyze the movie, those are Habitus, Capital/Modal, and Field, which determine the agent’s strategy. After conducting the research using Pierre Bourdieu's theory, the author found that a strategy is a tool of struggle, strategy is based on emergence, strategy is made to counter another strategy, and strategy is a manifestation of capital, habitus, and field.

Abstract

The aims of this research were: 1. to investigate more deeply about the fis phenomenon a child aged 3 year, 2. to fis phenomenon described in a 3-year-old child. The data of this research was taken Adelia Nur Febriyana from Jln. Jend A H Nasution. Lrg, Maleo. Kelurahan Kambu. Kota Kendari. Sulawesi Renggara. This study applied qualitative descriptive method. The techniques for collecting the data were observation, recording, and note. Based on the data analysis, the result show that Adelia Nur Febriyana had Fis Phenomenon. Where in pronounces the phoneme /R/ into /L/, the phoneme /S/ becomes /C/ or /T/ and sometimes removes the phoneme /k/ at the end of the word and the phoneme /h/ at the beginning of the word. The role of parents is very important in the development of children's language. Several factors that can affect a child's language development include family factors or the child's environment, in addition to supporting factors for children's language development, there are also inhibiting factors, namely the lack of perfect articulation tools so that they have obstacles but can be understood which have the same meaning and purpose. The research is still open for research on children's language acquisition, especially on further aspects of the fis phenomenon because there is still a lot that can be studied from children's language acquisition. Abstract

The use of trust repair discourse in "Freedom Writers" is based on the elements of trust repair discourse which build good relationships because good cooperation can be established in any case. The objective of the study is to describe how trust repair discourse is used in freedom writer’s movie script. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive to analyze the data. There are two sources of the data in this research, they are movie script as primary data and audiovisual sources as secondary data. The data were collected through watching the movie, reading the script, and selecting the data. Technique of data analysis is done through presenting, describing, interpreting, and concluding the data. The results showed that there were 15 data related to trust repair, consisting of 9 data related to restore positive expectations and 6 data related to counteract negative expectations. The study found that the main character in this movie script uses restore positive expectations and counteract negative expectations in this way the main character gradually gains trust that has been damaged by the ability, integrity and benevolence possessed by the main character so that the main character can restore the sense of trust that has been lost have been corrupted by believing that what they are doing is wrong only brings misery and dishonorable death.
