Abstract

This research raises the scale study of traditional angkola buildings with a case study of the GKPA Museum, Silangge. This building consists of the elements making up the space, both indoor and outdoor. The building blocks in the building include: the head of the building (ni orbo horns, closed capillaries, dadap na tolu, and lisplank), the building body (doors, windows, vents, and poles), and the legs of the building (foundations, columns, and stairs). While the building elements outside the building include: buildings with supporting functions (Debora orphanage and Debora orphanage study room), Debora orphanage field, and some vegetation around the Angkola Museum. The scale that will be examined in this study is the human scale (human as a benchmark) of the elements forming the outer space of traditional Angkola buildings. The scale study will be carried out by analyzing the human scale of the building with a predetermined observation point. This study was classified in research that uses descriptive methods with qualitative analysis. Data analysis with descriptive analysis techniques that use benchmarks. Evaluation research that aims to assess the extent to which the variables studied are in accordance with predetermined benchmarks. The benefit of this research is finding a scale study found in Angkola's traditional building, whether the building is classified as good with the scale of the outer space that exists in the elements of the building's outer space.

Abstract

The use of bilingual roadway directional sign is getting more important worldwide. It is triggered by the increasing concerns about the importance of providing the same information for foreigners as locals.  However, while some countries have set their regulations and standards, there is still no general standard produced in the market about the adequate design for the bilingual roadway directional signs.  This study explores available standards and discusses some issues concerned by comparing various bilingual directional signs practices in different countries and analyzing them based on related theories and past studies. Several similarities and consistencies were found in many countries, and thus particular guidance in the design approach for bilingual road directional sign is concluded. The design approach should pay attention to text volume, order, physical distinction, and also familiarity.

Abstract

Toba Batak traditional community settlements are much influenced by the main livelihood of the community namely farming. Matters relating to these livelihoods include water springs, forests and land. Besides that the factor that also influences is a very close kinship in the community. Kinship in patrilineal family relationships and in affina family relationships. These two things can be seen in the pattern of community settlements where there are facilities that are shared by the community both in relation to agricultural activities or in relations with kinship or traditional ceremonies. The development of community settlements can then be seen starting from the smallest scope, namely huta, then horja and bius. The development of huta, horja and bius is always related to the regulation of natural resources and traditional ceremonies. Changes to be discussed are changes related to the implementation of traditional ceremonies, regulation of the use of natural resources, defense and use of shared facilities. The wider the area of a settlement, the more complex the problems that occur. This is what we want to see in managing the traditional Batak Toba community settlements that have a very specific regulatory system

Abstract

Climate is the most important factor in architectural design, climate greatly influences the shape and appearance of buildings. Colonial buildings are buildings that have experienced a mix of European architects with local adaptation processes including the climate in Indonesia, one of which is the Indonesian Plantation Museum building in the city of Medan. Indonesia is included in a region that has a humid tropical climate, where the tropical climate has certain characteristics caused by solar heat, high humidity, rainfall, and wind movement. The purpose of this study is to identify aspects of tropicality in colonial buildings that have adapted to tropical climates. The method used in the study is the Case Study Qualitative Method with observation and identification of external forms (building orientation, roof, terraces and outside space) and the shapes in buildings (Patterns of Space, Floors, Walls, and Openings). The results of this study is the Indonesian Plantation Museum tends to be able to adapt to the local climate even though the shape and style of the building comes from Europeans, known as transition architecture. The building elements that are more adapted to the tropical climate are roofs with slopes of more than 30º, openings and cross ventilation, marble and wood floors and very thick concrete walls.
