Abstract

In the process of mathematics learning, many students are less active, many are noisy, the work given is not completed, and the results of student evaluations are not satisfactory. For this reason, appropriate learning improvements are needed, namely by applying the think pair share cooperative learning model. This study aims to improve mathematics learning outcomes through think pair share cooperative learning method (think, pair, share) for Marsudirini Perawang  elementary school students. The research subjects were students of grade 3 (three) totaling 30 people. The type of research is classroom action research. The research procedure consisted of planning, implementing actions, observing, and reflecting. The research instruments are learning tools and data collection tools (test sheets and student observation sheets).  The results showed that the students' scores had increased very well from 0% then 10% to 26%. In the daily test score of 1, the number of students who achieved the very good category increased by 10%. Meanwhile, in the daily test score of 2, the number of students who achieved the very good category increased to 26%. The average score of students on the second daily test increased above the minimum completeness criteria (KKM) that had been determined by the school (7370). Student activities in the aspects of answering questions, discussing student worksheets and reporting discussion results have increased. In the first cycle the average was 17.3% and 35.3%. While in the second cycle it rose to 53% and 73.3%. Overall, the average student activity in the first cycle was 18.12% and in the second cycle 63.33%. Thus, the application of think pair share cooperative learning model can improve mathematics learning outcomes in grade 3 (three) elementary school students.

Abstract

It seems that Nigeria's educational system has been undergoing improvement only on quantitative when it comes to the number of enrolments in students and schools. However, little effort has been put in place in terms of capacity (physical and material resources, human and financial resources) to manage high enrollment. Resources capacity in secondary schools was nothing to write home about. Most of these resources in secondary school were dilapidated. To worsen the scenario, the scarce resources allocated to these schools are grossly inadequate compared to students' enrollment and come late to the end-users in the public secondary schools. The various stakeholders in the education sector express stern concern about the consistently poor performance of students in secondary schools, especially in mathematics. Since secondary school education is expected to be free by the government, coupled with population increase, it is reasonable for people to take advantage of the free education program. Although the government and private sector of education keep providing qualified teaching staff and non-teaching staff, students in secondary schools still face poor performance in mathematics. The effect of all these on the academic performance in Nigeria's mathematics secondary school students concerns researchers of this empirical work. It is based on these issues and many more that this work sought to empirically investigate the impact of resource factors and quality of instruction on the performance of Nigeria secondary school students in mathematics.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the findings regarding the difficulties experienced by students in solving combinatorial problems as an indication of weak High Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) students. The reason is that the lecture process has not facilitated active and interactive student involvement, where the lecture process is dominated by lecturers through the lecture method. Lecturers' formative and summative assessments are mostly because they only access understanding and mastery of the material, are not contextual, and have not facilitated student HOTS achievement. This study aims to improve student HOTS through the application of HOTS-oriented learning. The HOTS-oriented learning components in this study include HOTS-based strategies and models, media, and assessments. The type of research used is a quasi-experimental study with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample for this research was 17 students taking discrete mathematics courses for the 2022/2023 Academic Year. The data obtained were analyzed descriptively in the form of mean, standard deviation, and n-gain and inferential analysis using the one-way Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) test. The results showed that students' HOTS experienced an increase after applying HOTS-oriented learning in the four aspects of the skills assessed, namely the skills of analyzing, evaluating, and creating; problem-solving skills; creative thinking skills, and critical thinking skills, with an average increase in the medium criteria. Learning that is applied effectively to student HOTS achievement.
