Abstract

The Stone stele is made in a particular form based on a particular concept. The concept behind the making of the inscription is called meaning. Archaeologists need to interpret this in uncovering the meaning behind the inscription form by studying semiotics in the overall form and contents of the inscription. This paper studies the meaning of the stambha inscriptions from the 9th-10th century AD. The study is aimed at reconstructing the concept behind the making of the stambha inscriptions in ancient Java. The method used in this study consists of data collection, data analysis, and interpretation. Based on this series of studies, it can be seen that the stambha inscription has a hierarchical sacred meaning.

Abstract

From 2017 to 2019, a number of street names were changed in Yogyakarta, Bandung and Surabaya City by each Provincial Government for the purpose of celebrating the reconciliation between the Sundanese (West Java) and the Javanese (Central Java, East Java, and Yogyakarta) after years of dispute due to the infamous Bubat Tragedy which occurred in the 14th century. Some existing street names in Yogyakarta and Surabaya were changed to those associated with Sundanese history, such as Jalan Padjadjaran and Jalan Siliwangi, while some existing street names in Bandung were changed to those associated with Javanese history, such as Jalan Majapahit and Jalan Hayam Wuruk. The author explores this phenomenon using the concept of critical toponymies and examines the connections between naming, place-making, and power underlying such policy. This study found that, although the changes were made with good intentions, in some cases this was actually opposed by several factions within the local community because those changes could obliterate the historical significance and collective memory represented by the previous names. From theoretical perspective, this paper also discussed the successful and unsuccessful changes of street names, as well as their relevance to the current context. In other words, our findings can be taken into consideration in future policy-making process.

Abstract

Traditional society is a society that is strongly influenced by tradition. However, the fact is a society can also change such strong tradition. This research aims to understand the driving force that allows the influence of tradition and changes in traditions by traditional societies. Through a systematic review of relevant literature, this research complements Giddens' structuration theory with MacIntyre's thoughts about cultural components that make up the cognitive structure and shows that worldview - a virtual structure in cognition that corresponds to the structure of society - is the force that determines the influence and change of traditions. Therefore, different from studies that point to external forces such as education, globalization, and modernization as causes of changes in traditional societies, this study refers to worldview as an agent's internal capacity. The influence of tradition on agents and changes in tradition caused by various external forces is mediated by worldview; thus, the power of tradition presupposes the power of worldview, and changes in tradition presuppose a change in worldview.

Abstract

The glance of perfume advertising found in the previous study has two main themes: visual and verbal strategies. Video advertisement of Guerlain brand perfume from France for his latest male series, L’Homme Idéal, displayed containing both themes referred to the domination of monochrome colors and the narration of the explanation of perfume itself uploaded through YouTube social media. This study examines metaphors and signs in an advertisement to see how far the advertisement affects people’s minds in playing with their imagination, using a qualitative method and literature studies as a data collection technique. The analysis uses Kövecses’s metaphorical theory, Peirce’s semiotics, and Baudrillard’s hyperreality and is supported seven informants’ input. It is found that seductive language in the form of metaphors succeeded in attracting male consumers. Various signs are also found to help the metaphor visualize the ideal image of masculinity through handsomeness, intelligence, and strength. Combining these two types of themes in the depiction of lifestyle and the explanation of the perfume smell in this video advertisement has a great potential to affect people in achieving hyperreality.

This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive analysis method. Through a process of appreciation, habituation, additional insight into jazz music and continuous and consistent practice, Salamander Big Band members can adapt to cultures from outside Indonesia's popular music culture, namely playing American big band music with the right aesthetic.

Abstract

Literature, as a work containing facts and fiction, can obscure the conventions of realities and create new realities so that there are no visible boundaries between the real thing and the unreal thing. Fact and fiction coincide and simulate to form hyperreality. In the short story “Yang Datang dari Negeri Asap (Who Comes from the Smoky Country)” by Hary B. Kori’un, the existence of facts and fiction overlap each other. The author created the country of smoke as a fictitious world due to his contemplation on the consumption culture, which is a phenomenon in people’s lives and relates it to the haze disaster that keeps going to occur every year. The researcher sorts out facts and fiction that are interconnected in the short story to explore the creation of hyperreality using the perspective of Jean Baudrillard. As a result, the researcher found a consumption culture in the community, especially plantation entrepreneurs. The presence of a new world in a short story is a reproduction of the value of a sign or symbol that simulates as if there was a poverty scenario created by globalization through a variety of industrial distribution media to extract all potentials to benefit an established industry. Finally, consumption culture causes all aspects of life to be a commodity object because the needs that arise will always exceed the production of goods.

Abstract

This paper discusses the syntactic function of the word jeongmal (정말) analyzed through part of speech (품사). In the Korean language, a word can be classified into more than one parts of speech, which is called pumsa tongyong (품사통용) or conversion. An example of pumsa tongyong is the word jeongmal, which can function as an adverb, noun, and interjection. This research shows that such classification makes the word jeongmal has different functions in a syntactic unit, which are main component (predicate), attributive component (adverb), and independent component. In addition, the limitations of the word jeongmal as a noun and POS-tagging error in classifying the word jeongmal as an interjection in the corpus were found. The syntactic function of the word jeongmal is important to be understood because jeongmal is a basic vocabulary with a high frequency of use, both spoken and written. This research is using a quantitative- qualitative method by analyzing a corpus (corpus-based analysis), 21st Century Sejong Corpora (21세기 세종 말뭉치). POS-tagged written and spoken corpus data is used as the data source of this research.
