Abstract

The focus of discussion in this paper is joget as a dance which embodies the concept of Nusantara (Indonesian archipelago), which has undergone much development from the past to the present. Beginning as an entertaining social dance in various Southeast Asian countries, joget became a customary form of entertainment in the whole context of Nusantara as a region. Surprisingly, it has also inspired new genres and types of traditional dances for centuries. Around 1920s to 1930s, it was the most popular form of dance in many halls of entertainment in Indonesia, Singapore, and the Malay Peninsula. Joget was the most common type of social dance. It has an indigenous origin, but gained popularity in urban setting at the time when ballroom and Latin-American dances were not yet popular.

Abstract

This paper discusses the dissemination of information about cultural heritage to the young generation, particularly about the kingdom of Majapahit whose ancient sites are situated in Trowulan, East Java, Indonesia. In the context of public archaeology, heritage information is no longer communicated to the public in mind-numbing ways; instead, it is presented in such a way as to increase positive attitude and behavior toward the cultural heritage. In the context of marketing communication, the dissemination of information which is in accordance with the consumers’ or visitors’ tastes can no longer be performed by presenting raw facts only, but by presenting the information in the form of underdog or topdog stories or narratives. The objective of the research in this paper is to measure the effects of the dissemination of information about Majapahit cultural heritage by means of narratives on public attitude, intention to visit, and pride. The research applied the 3x1 experiment design to the participants. Our research findings confirm that the dissemination of cultural heritage information in the form of topdog narratives directly improved the participants’ attitude toward and intention to visit Majapahit relics in Trowulan. Additionally, the dissemination of cultural heritage information in the form of topdog narratives also increased the participants’ pride in Indonesia.

Abstract

Linguistic landscape (LL) refers to a set of linguistic objects which signifies a public space (Ben-Rafael, Shohamy et al., 2006). This concept encompasses a number of topics such as social, political, cultural, and economic ones. Using the concept of LL, the author examined the names of the main streets (râjamârga) around the Yogyakarta Palace in terms of their function as the identifiers of place names (informational function) and as carriers of certain messages (symbolic function). In order to generate comprehensive results, the author used qualitative approach through the analysis of visual data (photographs) of street name plates. The findings reveal two functions of linguistic landscape which is established by street name plates. The first is informational function, namely to refer to geographical places and to the social space of the Javanese which are presented as a single ethnic group, while the orthographic use of hanacaraka asserts language boundary. The second is symbolic function, namely to convey a collection of meanings (according to the philosophy of Paraning Dumadi), to delineate Javanese as an ethnic group, to designate Javanese as the native language of the local people, to indicate a strong link between governmental powers and place naming practices, and even to serve economic purposes by attracting tourists to Yogyakarta.

Abstract

The main objective of this research is mapping and exploring how the oppression and resistance of the main character (Kekayi) in Oka Rusmini’s short story Pohon Api are manifested through the strategic use of her own intellectuality, not only her beauty; her focus on future visions; and her attempt to garner support from the higher authority to win the competition. This research applied the qualitative approach with content analysis method. This research reveals that Kekayi, the main character in Oka Rusmini’s short story "Pohon Api", is an individual who is at an "intersection". She faces a series of oppression, discrimination, harassment, and unpleasant events which comes from all directions of the "intersection". Then, when a bad treatment is given, it will form a particular pattern that becomes habitual and eventually becomes an ideology. Furthermore, Kekayi possesses the capital to become a strong woman. That power is something given by the Almighty. However, she is also a female learner who always wants to be equal with men.

Abstract

9 Summers 10 Autumns (2011) is an autobiographical novel about a young man from a small city of Batu who later succeeds in pursuing his dream by working in the United States. The novel was written based on Iwan Setyawan’s life story and it was made into a movie by the same title in 2013. Two years later, the movie was adapted into an augmented motion picture hinted illustrative book which combines novel, comic, app, and movie together. This phenomenon of re-transformation of a literary work is said to be the first of its kind in Indonesia and has somewhat contributed to the rising trend of movies adapted into books or comics in Indonesia, such as Assalamualaikum Beijing (2015) and Ada Apa dengan Cinta? (What’s Up with Love?) (2016). This study examines Iwan Setyawan’s strategy for achieving legitimacy in the arena of Indonesian literature through his motivational rags-to-riches ideals which are depicted in the book. The discussion is carried out by applying Pierre Bourdieu’s field of cultural production theory, as well as the sociology of literature approach, in order to highlight the phenomenon of transformation from novel into movie and eventually into an augmented motion picture hinted illustrative book. Later, this study discovered that the phenomenon has changed the image of Indonesian art and literary world. It proves that such prestigious legitimacy can now be achieved through commercial strategies, making it seem dynamic, but at the same time questionable in its most authentic sense.

Abstract

As a form of cultural process, acculturation serves as an important factor in tourism. Usually, the hosts borrow the results of acculturation generated from tourism activities more than the tourists or guests do. Acculturation in tourism occurs not only in tourism practices today, but also in those in the past, including the tourism practices in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial era. This article discusses acculturation which became part of tourism activities in the Dutch East Indies by applying historical methods and Nunez’s concept of acculturation in tourism. By using guidebooks, newspapers, magazines, postcards, photographs, and travelogues as data sources, this article traced the result of acculturation at that time. Results show that acculturation really took place in the tourism activities in the Dutch East Indies. There were material objects and customs which served as tourism facilities and could be seen, performed, and enjoyed by the tourists. It can be concluded that at that time the tourists or guests borrowed the results of acculturation more than the hosts did.

Abstract

Amidst the debates over the most appropriate Indonesian term for ‘woman’, the present research examines the use of the gendered terms perempuan and wanita. The aim of this research is to reveal which term is more preferable and how the terms are used to talk about women. Using corpus-based approach, this study compared the frequency and pattern of word usage of perempuan and wanita obtained from two corpora, namely IndonesianWac and ind_mixed_2013. The research used a mixed-method design in which quantitative analysis was used to identify word frequency and to measure significant collocation, while qualitative analysis was used to determine meanings on the basis of semantic preference. The study reveals that the term wanita tends to be more frequently used than the term perempuan to signify ‘woman’. In terms of meaning, both terms are used to talk about women in relation to their body (especially their reproductive functions), other people (particularly men), family, and age. The difference is that perempuan tends to be used to talk about women in relation to gender equality and organization, while wanita tends to focus on women’s sexual relationship. Furthermore, results strongly indicate that perempuan tends to denote women in relation to their roles in public domain, whereas wanita tends to denote women in relation to their roles in domestic domain.

Abstract

Menglongshi (hanzi: 朦胧诗) or ‘misty poetry’ (also translated as ‘obscure poetry’) is one kind of Chinese poems created by young poets who experienced the Cultural Revolution in 1970s. The emergence of a new style of poetry which is different from the previous styles marked a new era of poetry writing in China. Its uniqueness lies in wordplay, metaphor, synesthesia, and symbols whose meanings cannot be easily identified. The misty poem also drew the cautious attention of the Chinese government, because the symbols and sequence of sentences were suspected to contain thoughts which are considered not in accordance with the government’s policies. Bei Dao and Gu Cheng were known as two of the most important misty poets. This paper analyzes two poems by Bei Dao and two poems by Gu Cheng in terms of their intrinsic elements, such as imagery and language style in order to interpret their meaning. Furthermore, in order to provide more supporting evidence, this research also analyzes the poems’ extrinsic elements to identify their respective meanings in a more comprehensive way. Therefore, the explanation for the occurrence of Cultural Revolution is a very important finding in this research. This study sought to explain the important role of misty poems in explaining the Cultural Revolution by examining Bei Dao and Gu Cheng’s works.

Abstract

This research on translation problems aims to examine the translation of cultural words in the novel Entrok (2010) into The Years of the Voiceless (2013). This research was conducted by applying qualitative and functional approaches, while the data were analyzed by applying Williams and Chesterman’s causal comparative model to identify the translation procedures which were applied to fulfill the available skopos. Based on Newmark’s categorization of cultural words, the researcher identified 80 cultural words which were categorized into three general groups: (1) material culture; (2) social culture and leisure; and (3) organization, customs, procedure, activity, and concept. The data were collected through library research and an interview with the translator. The researcher then used the causal comparative technique to compare between cultural words contained in the source text and their respective equivalents, and to analyze the translation procedures chosen by the translator to fulfill the skopos. There are four translation problems found in this research: (1) an SL concept and referent does not have the same TL concept and referent, (2) an SL concept and referent is not lexicalized in TL, (3) TL lacks of specific words, and (4) SL and TL have different ways of viewing a referent. To deal with those translation problems, the translator applied nine procedures consisting of explicitation, generalization, literal equivalent, calque, couplet (transference and footnote, transposition and cultural equivalent, and transposition and functional equivalent), cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, functional equivalent, and transference. The skopos was fulfilled through the application of translation procedures by taking account of ST context. According to a number of TT readers, the translator is considered successful in maintaining the author’s language style and producing the atmosphere of the source culture. The use of footnotes helps TT readers to understand ST cultural words better, but it also reduces the readers’ comfort in reading the TT.
