Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia is a peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Faculty of Humanities, University of Indonesia. It invites original articles on various issues within humanities, which include but are not limited to philosophy, literature, archaeology, anthropology, linguistics, history, cultural studies, philology, arts, library and information science focusing on Indonesian studies and research. Wacana seeks to publish a balanced mix of high-quality theoretical or empirical research articles, case studies, review papers, comparative studies, exploratory papers, and book reviews. All accepted manuscripts will be published both online and in printed forms. The journal publishes two thematic issues per year, in April and October. The first thematic issue consists of two numbers.

Abstract

Each political formula in the form of a statement (argument) always has a direct interconnected political purpose relative to an important group. This importance factor becomes basic consideration in the formulation of a political statement in such a manner that it can influence public emotion and feeling producing desired agreement and response from the public. Because a wide segment of society becomes special target, with their different levels of education and understanding, the logical aspects are considered unimportant and subject to elimination. The important thing is how to encourage public emotion and encourage the public to response according to what the politicians want. That is why many political statements are irrational (argumentum ad populum), having no consistency between the premise and the conclusion. Many political statements commit the fallacy of composition, shifting the distributive understanding to collective understanding. This article examines the types of fallacies in political staements by presenting actual cases as illustrations.

Abstract

Horror film is a film genre that presents things that are frightening, tense, and horrifying. The idea of horror film is basically to terrorize the audience through various terrifying acts or actors. Horror films in the beginning are closely related to stories rooted in the cultural of Europe, especially English literature. The definition of horror in the beginning was a story that presented uncomfortable feelings to the readers. This definition changed with the development of film. Horror film developed into a genre that came to stand side by side with drama, comedy film, gangster film, and action film.

Abstract

The aim of comedy as a work of drama is to entertanin and ciritcize by making fun of the human characters and flaws or helpless situation. Comedy also makes fun of people from the county side who imitate the ways the Parisians dress and talk in exaggerated way. The works of the well-known comedy writers like Moli re (1622-1673), Marivaux (1688-1763) and Beaumarchais (1732-1799) deal with universal characters and problems, stereotypical human flaws, for example, stinginess, hypocrisy, arrogance, and snobbism.

Abstract

Dewasa ini banyak media massa cetak diterbitkan oleh dan untuk perempuan. Majalah yang demikian lazim disebut majalah wanita. Sebagian besar mahalah wanita diterbitkan oleh orang INdonesia (majalah wanita Indonesia); sebagian yang lain merupakan majalah asing yang diterbitkan di Indonesia (edisi Indonesia). Dalam tulisan ini dimuat perbandingan isi kedua kelompok majalah wanita tersebut, yang dikaitkan dengan isu tentang perempuan. Dari perbandingan, tampak bahwa isu modernitas, yang terutama diusung majalah wanita asing edisi Indonesia, mempengaruhi tampilan isi majalah wanita Indonesia.

Abstract

The Bunmei Kaika pulicy which was applied by the Meiji regime motivated a kind of feminism understanding upon grups of men and women. The understanding was followed by many individual movements that were aimed at the fighting for equality between men and women in various aspects of life. The preliminary movement that was done individually then developed towards a movement that shaped a wider social net through the establishment of women organization.

Abstract

This study reveals that some models of comercial breaks appeared at the Indonesian private television program, e.g. shampoo and soap advertisement, could invite some interpretation and functions. Their appearance could reflect women's surrender facing the action of violence. These article discusses about the metaphor of the women's body and how it becomes a medium that is constructed by two aspects, the power and the beauty. The result shows that the messages of comercial break gave meaningfulness of the pragmatical values, the persuasive or ideological statement and the dialectically comunicative process. Keywords appeared in the comercial breaks show the women's action of violence, pragmatical value, ideological value, dialectically communicative process.

Abstract

This paper sugests the readers to be critical in their concern for the problem of pornography. It seems clear that pornography is a moral problem, but a simple argument from Traditional Philosophy of Language has shown that pornography does not have any meaning. This kind of argument is named Meta-ethics. However, pornography is a phenomenon in our society and it does happened. On the one side, we should resist the temptation of scrutinizing pornography as a moral problem. On the other side, pornography has risen a big worry in our society. In resisting the temptation we found a better theory, so that we are able to uncover the origin or pornography. John Langshaw Austin has saved some study of impossible phenomena including pornography by his theory of Speech Ary. The result of the study is that pornography is made possible in social relation and it is about Power.
