Abstract

This study intends to uncover, analyze and evaluate law enforcement practices against criminal acts of forest and land fires with corporate actors in the Riau Police. Riau was chosen as the research location because the phenomenon of forest and land fires in Riau was so complex. The impact caused by forest and land fires in Riau is not only a domestic problem, but also concerns regional areas, especially Singapore and Malaysia. The research is focused not on law enforcement of forest and land fires, but rather on the relationship of patronage and policing in handling forest and land fires in Riau Province. Patronage politics between the police and corporations from the plantation and industrial plantation sectors. In this context, dialectics (habitus, arena, capital) and patronage networks will be deepened, which then influence policing actions in law enforcement carried out by the police.

Abstract

Terrorism has been of global concern in recent times. The problem is not only a great challenge and a threat to the security and stability of a nation; it hampers overall growth and development. In spite of government’s counter-terrorism interventions and responses, as well as interventions from other nations and bodies, the issue of terrorism in Nigeria appears to be rising, which calls for more holistic approaches in tackling the menace. This study is an attempt to contribute to the ongoing interventions to combat the current challenge of terrorism, particularly the Boko Haram insurgency in Nigeria. The paper, therefore, attempts to expose and explore various ways the media can be used to instigate a radical transformation towards curtailing terrorism and achieving a terrorism-free state. The study adopts the action research method as a research methodology. It is also predicated on the Agenda-setting theory as well as the cultivation theory. Findings from this study reveal that the aim of terrorists is to create insecurity, destabilise the country to make it ungovernable. This study thus in examining the power of the mass media in the curtailing of terrorism concludes that the mass media are lethal weapons for contending terrorism.

Abstract

The formation of national identity by the Lao government has been unsuccessful due to globalization since 2000. The Lao government realized this and decided to shift its focus to the economic dimension as a means to unite the Lao people. In the 2000s, the West had a major influence on Laos representation, but after the 2008 economic crisis in the United States, Laos prioritize the trade with China and South Korea. As the global economic environment changed, Laos needed to attract the attention of Asian tourists. In this situation, re-orientalism becomes a cultural strategy exclusive to Asian countries. Simultaneously, re-orientalism shows a shift in the nature of Laos' national identity; from essentialism to pragmatism. As the study case, the 2020 Laos national tourism video shows that re-orientalism emphasizes primitive images and simple pleasures to reproduce a common representation of Laos as a spiritual and asexual Beautiful Buddha country. Each of these re-orientalism tools, directly and indirectly, affects the economic benefits of Laos.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the interaction patterns and culture of society. The pretext of limiting interactions as the key to handle COVID-19 certainly has various challenges in its implementation in society. Regulators have promulgated various global and national policies (in macro level). It is necessary to ascertain whether the policy can be conveyed and implemented correctly at the micro-level in the community, which has various social and cultural characters. Neighborhood Association (known as Rukun Warga in Indonesia), as the smallest community in society, is undoubtedly the spearhead in ensuring all global and national policies can be carried out correctly. The advancement in technology with social media as its main strength can certainly facilitate various scenarios for preventing COVID-19, as long as it is well utilized. Human cross-checks remain the key to filtering this abundant amount of information. This research intends to study how the role of technology in bridging global information regarding the prevention of COVID-19 can be conveyed well to micro-communities such as Neighborhood Association, as well as seeing the role of the association in sorting out the information presented by technology and making it a COVID-19 prevention treatment according to local wisdom and community character. This study found that technology (especially social media) played a significant role in delivering information and socialization to the Neighborhood Association level. Also, the association has various ways of translating global and national socialization into a treatment that impacts society's compliance regarding social interactions according to health protocols. Furthermore, the author also found that the globally proclaimed restriction for social interactions strengthens social interaction at the Neighborhood Association's micro or environmental level.
