Abstract

Many archaeological researches have been conducted in Serang City, Banten Province for decades so that a significant amount of knowledge has been produced. The Public Archaeology approach, especially museums and cultural resource management, has also been applied. However, these efforts have not been maximized resulting in several problems. Particularly, since 2020, COVID-19 pandemic has affected various fields and sectors, including the cultural sectors related to the preservation and management of cultural heritage in Serang City. The efforts to prevent the transmission of COVID-19 have been carried out by implementing health protocols and large-scale social restriction policies including on the sites and museums. The pandemic along with its uncertainty opens the potential for some problems to increasingly influence the social and political aspects; for instance, the income of the local community has decreased. Thus, a new approach known as Rediscovering Archaeology is needed to reduce the existing problems. This approach is carried out by conducting a research followed by a community service involving multidisciplinary knowledge and several related parties or Penta Helix. The methods include field observation, interviews, and ongoing mentoring. This approach has been shown to reduce the potential social and political tensions in society. This approach also convinces related parties that archaeological heritage can be a cultural capital in dealing with the pandemic and is expected to generate prosperity for the community in the future.

Abstract

Russia has a culture of communal living that already existed far before the Soviet era. In the soviet regime, communal living was seen as an instrument to reach Soviet’s utopian objective. In order to minimize dissident movements and rebellions, people are pressed to live together so they can watch each other. As a result, no Russian word could describe privacy, the concept itself did not grow in Russian society. Although consciousness of privacy needs began to grow. In the meantime, people around the world start to fix privacy issues by formulating the law, while Soviet people still dealing with the concept itself. Many of Russian films shows the privacy issue in Soviet communal life, one of them is a film by Kantemir Balagov (2019) titled Дылда/Dylda (Beanpole). The film is relatively new, therefore, not much previous research about it. By analyzing how the film Дылда shows privacy in Soviet communal life, it will reveal that now is seeing privacy as an issue. With the three dimensional view of CDA, the result obtained is that critiques arise for this ‘crisis of privacy’ as a consequence of lacking privacy by people outside Soviet.

Abstract

In 2019’s presidential election in Indonesia, the Internet was flooded by unverified and contradicting claims, which only blurred the lines between fact, opinion, and straight-out hoax. This research investigates how an educated group (college students) evaluates online sources in the context of Indonesia’s political campaigns. An assessment was designed for the students to judge the credibility of five political news articles appearing online in April 2019, the election month. The framework used was inspired by similar assessments conducted by the Stanford History Education Group, researchers who study digital literacy among American students. For this research, fifty students from five faculties in Universitas Indonesia identified false information on the Internet and explained how they recognized it. Their explanations were then classified into three: Mastery, Emerging, and Beginning. The results show that, by and large, the students could recognize sources containing false information. However, only a small percentage provided logical reasoning on Mastery level. It is hoped that the findings give insight into how the students assess online sources and complement other similar works that investigate hoax and political campaigns in other parts of the world.

Abstract

Drama performs various roles in the society. One of such roles is the re-presentation of past events. These past events are historical antecedents which a given society is meant to be abreast of in order to cut a proper walking path for the future, either to avoid pitfalls of the past or uphold a certain standard. Likening drama to a mirror, this paper discussed the reflective nature of drama in the Nigerian society. Through the use of the literary method, Chukwuma Anyanwu’s dramatic texts, Stunted Growth, The Battle, Another Weekend, Gone! and Broken Image, were analysed to ascertain how well the playwright was able to project the Nigerian society through these works. It was discovered that the plays were well crafted by the author and that they mirrored the Nigerian milieu. It was therefore concluded that members of the society, especially the political class, should learn from these plays and build a society that is devoid of intimidation, corruption, oppression of the masses and the mass media, in order for democracy to thrive.

Abstract

One result of culture is literary work, but broadly speaking literature is the work of individuals, only the object delivered will not be separated from the culture and social life of the community. The close relationship between literature and culture can produce literary works that have a function as cultural preservation. A complex culture can be reflected in a literary work. If traced carefully, it can be known that some authors have included a tradition and culture of an area in their literary work. One type of imaginary story is a novel. A novel is a term for a long, imaginary literary work that presents characters and displays a series of events and settings in a structured manner. This study uses the novel Asmara Djibrat Ludira (Furthermore abbreviated ADL) as a data source. The theory used for structural analysis in the form of figures, characterizations, plot, background, themes, and message in ADL novels is a structural theory from Panuti Sudjiman a book called “Memahami Cerita Rekaan” (Understanding Fiction Stories), while for analyzing darma (spiritual mission) in Javanese morality context, researcher using ethical theory from Franz Magnis Suseno and descriptive - qualitative method from Teeuw and John W. Creswell. The conclusion of this study shows that moral message contained in it regarding the role of soldiers who must always hold fast to the principles of spiritual mission and the spiritual mission (darma) of the main character's knights is done by fighting the invaders and saving his lover.

Abstract

A mosque is the Muslims’ primary place of worship. The term ‘mosque’ is derived from an Arabic word meaning a place for sujood (salah). However, verily, not only is a mosque merely the Muslims’ place for salah, but it may also be taken advantage of as a place for enhancing social and economic conditions of the neighboring residents regardless of their races, ethnic groups and religions. This is what Jogokariyan Mosque in Yogyakarta has exemplified. Located in Jogokariyan Kampong, Mantrijeron Sub-district, Yogyakarta City, the mosque started to be built on September 20th 1966, with the initial size of which measuring 15 by 9 meter and occupying 660 square meters of land. It was inaugurated in August 1967. When directly observing it for several days in July 2018, I noticed that this Jogokariyan Mosque had many facilities, distinctions, and uniqueness that most mosques did not have in general. For instance, very few or probably no mosques had inns with dozens of rooms with three-star-hotel facilities. The mosque’s management had applied three steps in enhancing Jogokariyan residents’ quality of life from mapping, giving services, to the society’s empowerment as the completion stage. To Muslims who had not made salah jamaah at the mosque, they were officially invited like that of a wedding invitation. In the society’s prosperity sector, the mosque’s management had renovated several needy families’ houses. With those many facilities, distinctions, and uniqueness, Masjid Jogokariyan had successfully played its role as an agent of change, so this mosque became legendary and phenomenal; therefore, in 2016 the Ministry Religious Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia bestowed it an award and made it a Pilot National Grand Mosque.

Abstract

The tourism sector in Indonesia is rapidly declining due to the impact of the co-19 pandemic that occurred in various parts of the world, including in Indonesia. Entering a new era of normalcy, or a new normality of what is the condition of tourism in Indonesia, is it able to rise again and what is the strategy? Bali Province, can be said to be the epicenter of tourism in Indonesia. In this article discusses case studies in Badung Regency, related to culture-based tourism with qualitative research methods to analyze the data collected. The theory used is the theory of marketing communication, and also the theory of culture and local wisdom, for the results of the achievement are the level and interest of culture-based tourism in the new normal period, how health protocols are still applied to ensure the safety of visitors so they are not at risk of exposure to covid-19 but they can still communicate between one visitor with another visitor.

Abstract

In the culture of any group of people, language, as a potent means of communication, cannot be relegated to the background. Every good play reflects the people for whom it is written. Esiaba Irobi’s Cemetery Road is not an exception. This essay, therefore, considers the employment of language as one of the major tools of revolt in Esiaba Irobi’s Cemetery Road in the dramatist’s attempt to restructure and build a new egalitarian society. The essence of this study is to reveal how Esiaba Irobi, has been able to deploy language as a revolutionary weapon in his play, Cemetery Road. The study, thus, showcases the ideological concern of the playwright in the play. The play is ideological because it takes a radical position on the issue of change in certain aspects of the Nigerian society. This essay, therefore, seeks to unveil the different aspects of language used in Cemetery Road. An examination of the text reveals that the dramatist employs macabre language or language of violence, persuasive language, wit, mockery and sarcasm, proverbial language, imagery, language of abuse and insensitivity, and language of despair.

Abstract

This paper examines the effectiveness of videos as a teaching medium in a pre-intermediate grammar class in Tangerang, Indonesia. This research adopted a quasi-experimental approach with a posttest control group design. Two pre-secondary classes in Tangerang were selected as subjects of the study. Data were obtained from the pretest and posttest, a questionnaire on student perception of video usage in teaching, and interviews. The experimental class was taught using a video while the control class was taught via textbooks. A pretest and a posttest were given to the experimental class. The improvement in scores was then examined using t-test. To compare the learning results of the two groups, a final posttest was conducted on both classes after the lessons. The scores were then examined using the Mann–Whitney test. Results indicated that students who learned from the video achieved higher scores than those who learned from textbooks. The learning-style questionnaire results revealed that learning with videos was enjoyable. Therefore, this medium is highly recommended as a crucial grammar-teaching tool in the classroom.
