Abstract

Purpose of the study: Individuals learn in unique ways, influenced by their preferences, ethnic backgrounds, cultures, and personal experiences. Similarly, teaching styles are shaped by educational philosophies and subject matter, leading to potential mismatches in how knowledge is processed in the classroom. This study aimed to identify the learning and teaching styles of students and teachers, explore the alignment between them, and assess the implications for language teaching. Methodology: This descriptive quantitative study involved 166 students and 23 teachers from the Department of English Language and Literature (DELL) at the University of Southern Mindanao. Data were collected using the Strategies Questionnaires and the VARK Questionnaire for Trainers to assess learning and teaching styles. Main Findings: The study revealed that AB English Language (ABEL) students predominantly exhibited bimodal learning preferences, particularly in the aural-read/write (AR) and aural-kinesthetic (AK) modalities. DELL teachers, on the other hand, tended to favor single-modal teaching styles, with a slight visual preference. A strong match was observed between single-modal teachers and students with similar learning preferences, although kinesthetic learning was underrepresented. Teachers who were bimodal or trimodal showed a better alignment with a wider range of student learning preferences. Additionally, all-modal teachers demonstrated the most effective alignment across all VARK learning styles. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study introduces a fresh perspective on language instruction by emphasizing the importance of incorporating multiple teaching styles to match the diverse learning preferences of students. The findings suggest that creating course outlines with a variety of teaching styles is essential for fostering more effective and inclusive language learning environments, ultimately enhancing student engagement and success.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The main aims of this study are to: 1) find out how Cambodian EFL university students perceive learner autonomy and engagement; and 2) find out how these two factors correlate to one another. Methodology: This research adopted a quantitative methods employing cluster sampling for data collection via a bilingual questionnaire in English and Khmer. The data was processed and analyzed using SPSS (Version 23), utilizing both descriptive and inferential statistics, including correlation coefficients, to extract insights from the survey findings. Main Findings: The main findings of this study were: 1) Cambodian EFL university students showed high levels of learner autonomy and engagement, indicating the need for interventions to develop autonomy and create supportive learning environments; and 2) a moderate positive correlation was found between learner autonomy and engagement. Novelty/Originality of this study: The unique aspect of this research is how it identifies the complex correlation between learner autonomy and engagement among EFL university students in Cambodia. High levels of motivation and autonomy were seen, but there were also clear difficulties with self-perceived competence. This comprehensive perspective enhances the existing literature by emphasizing the impact of contextual elements on autonomy and engagement, therefore addressing a gap in current research. Furthermore, the results underline the significance of creating supportive learning environments and the requirement for tailored interventions. These insights have practical implications for educational policy and pedagogical approaches, indicating that educators have to adopt techniques that foster autonomy and offer tailored support to improve learner engagement and optimize resource use.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: To dissect and compare the structural makeup of articles from SCOPUS, ACI, and a non-indexed journal and to assess the adherence of these articles to MEO’s Fish Bone Model. Methodology: Descriptive Research Design, Combination of Quantitative and Qualitative, Survey Method Main Findings: Scopus articles exhibit a higher degree of compliance with the model, indicating robust structural integrity and content depth. ACI and non-indexed journals show varied levels of adherence, suggesting room for improvement in meeting established scientific writing standards. Moreover, the analysis revealed that the articles share the basic structural framework. However, the Scopus and ACI articles include additional sections indicating a more comprehensive structure. Scopus articles excel in title clarity, abstract quality, and introduction, surpassing those from ACI and non-indexed journals. Novelty/Originality of this study: Comparing the structures of different articles from different journals using MEO’s fish bone model to guide those who are publishing their research papers.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This research aims to review the literature on leadership in comparison to transformational leader practices in education and explore the roles, challenges, and its effects. Methodology: This study presents a comprehensive literature review on transformational leadership in education, examining existing knowledge through a wide array of sources, including books, scholarly articles, reports, and credible online sources. Rather than relying on quantitative data and statistical analysis, this research emphasizes an in-depth exploration of the underlying principles and practical applications of transformational leadership in educational contexts. Main Findings: The findings from this study provide policymakers, educators, scholars, and academics with valuable insights into transformational leadership as a powerful driver of organizational change in education. Transformational leaders, through a clear vision for the future, enable staff to elevate organizational performance by moving from low to high achievement levels. By articulating and fostering a shared purpose, transformational leaders empower their teams to implement strategies that directly improve school outcomes. Transformational leadership in education stands as a powerful tool for driving positive change. By inspiring a shared vision, stimulating intellectual growth, building strong relationships, modeling ethical behavior, and empowering individuals, transformational leaders can create a sustainable and impactful legacy in schools. Novelty/Originality of this study: Unlike the other review, this provides uniquely synthesic comparision of transformation leadership style in Western and ASEAN case studies in education with the integration of transformational leadership practices and adaptation with the context of Industry 4.0.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: With mathematics self-efficacy and entrance exam scores being predictors of academic performance, the researchers of this study examined the relationship between these two predictors. Methodology: The instrument used for this study is the Mathematics Self-Efficacy Survey to measure the first-year prospective high school teachers’ mathematics self-efficacy. After the data were obtained, they were analyzed through the Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient to find the relationship between the two variables. Main Findings: The researchers of this study concluded that the level of mathematics self-efficacy of first-year prospective high school teachers differs, indicating that there are some areas of improvement in terms of their confidence in performing everyday math tasks, solving problems, and dealing with mathematics courses. Moreover, it is also concluded that the college entrance exam scores of prospective high school teachers do not have a significant relationship with mathematics self-efficacy. Novelty/Originality of this study: Despite the evidence that points to the predictive validity of entrance exam scores and mathematics self-efficacy on academic performance, there are limited studies concerned about the relationship between these two predictors, particularly in the context of USM students. Hence, the researchers of this study aim to delve into the possible relationship between college entrance examination scores and mathematics self-efficacy.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The subjects of this study were the Ilocano folksongs. This study aimed to collect Ilocano songs, know the worldviews of each song, identify the themes, and determine the different values that are embedded in the songs. Methodology: The researchers aimed to provide a diverse representation of Ilocano culture by collecting 10 Ilocano folksongs specifically songs about relationship. The data were collected online as they were accessible and easy to find. After gathering the necessary data, the researchers sought for English translations of each Ilocano folksong and determined the themes, values, and worldviews in the folksongs. Main Findings: Results showed that Ilocano folksongs contain themes such as love songs, courtship songs, death songs, unrequited love, sorrow, relationship, longing, admiration, and decision-making. Also the results showed that most of the values that are embedded in the songs are about reassurance, loyalty, sincerity, compatibility, thoughtfulness, vulnerability, being considerate, and being meticulous. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study would be a help to various stakeholders of the educational system as well as to the students taking up language and literature related courses for they would benefit and become well-informed of the analyzation of themes, values, and worldviews embedded in the Ilocano folksongs.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aimed to explore and determine the politeness strategies employed by President Rodrigo Roa Duterte during the Inquest of the Blue-Ribbon Committee on the Philippine War on Illegal Drugs. Methodology: A qualitative research design was used, specifically utilizing discourse analysis to examine the politeness strategies employed by President Rodrigo Duterte during the Inquest Proceeding. Data was gathered through video transcription and translation. These data were analyzed using Brown and Levinson’s in 1987 politeness strategy framework to form discourse implications and conclusions. Main Findings: Results revealed that President Duterte employed all the politeness strategies during the Inquest, namely: bald-on-record, negative politeness, positive politeness and off-record strategy. Findings also showed that Duterte’s dominant use of Bald-On Record strategy mirrors his authoritative and assertive nature, projecting a straightforward and decisive leader. Meanwhile, his limited use of Off-Record strategies displays a strategic balance between explicitness and subtlety depending on the audience and context. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study provides valuable insights into the role of politeness strategies in political discourse, offering a deeper understanding of how language shapes power dynamics and public perception in high-stakes settings. This also suggests how educators can meaningfully integrate Duterte’s politeness strategies in discussing persuasive communication, public image construction, and the influence of authority in political settings and debates.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: This study aims to determine the ability to write poetry with the theme of mother by utilizing songs. Methodology: The research methodology used is a qualitative descriptive method. Data collection techniques in this study consist of several things, including observation, tests, interviews, and documentation. There are three components used in the analysis, namely, the suitability of the contents of the poem to the theme, the accuracy of word choice (diction), and the use of language style (figure of speech). Main Findings: The results of the study showed that the ability to write poetry of class X students by utilizing song media was classified as good, with an average overall score reaching 81.83%, which was included in the Good category. A total of 13 students (65%) were qualified as good, 6 students (30%) were qualified as sufficient, and 1 student (5%) was in the qualification that must be maximized, while no students achieved the qualification of very good. The use of songs as a learning medium has proven effective in improving the ability to write poetry, especially in terms of theme and language style, although in terms of diction there are still quite striking variations between participants. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study offers novelty by combining visual and auditory approaches in learning to write poetry. Students will use songs as a stimulus to enrich diction and emotional expression, so that learning becomes more systematic, creative, and effective.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The study aims to compare the titration practices and the student-to-burette ratio among institutions with varied accreditation levels in Albay, Philippines. Methodology: The descriptive survey compared titration practices and student-to-burette ratio across educational institutions stratified with varied accreditation levels. The population was Chemistry Instructors and Laboratory Custodians from 15 institutions, totalling 30 respondents, with a sample size of 24 respondents. Data was collected using Survey Instruments for Chemistry Instructors and Laboratory Custodians. Statistical analysis included descriptive and inferential statistical analysis with a chi-square test of association and Cramer’s V effect size (α = 0.05). Main Findings: Associations between accreditation level, conduct, and availability of reagents for neutralization and complexometric titrations, chi-square test of association, and Cramer’s V effect size (α 0.05) were found. The student-to-burette ratio ranged from 1 to 4 students (Level IV and III) and 40+ students (II and I) per acid and base burettes to no burettes in Level I institutions. The reasons for the non-performance of the titration activities were: lack of materials, training, and experience, assistance in the laboratory, and class size. Novelty/Originality of this study: This study examines how accreditation levels and titration resources are associated with titration education. The challenges and strengths of titration education in Albay, Philippines, might not be captured in national and international studies. The holistic approach of evaluating titration practices, resource availability, and student-to-burette ratio provides a comprehensive picture of titration education in the province.

Abstract

Purpose of the study: The development of a culturally responsive teaching model, commonly called the Aligned Learning Model, is based on the idea that students' cultural backgrounds are significant in their learning process. Multicultural awareness in history education is an important aspect of education that aims to foster understanding and appreciation of cultural diversity. Integrating multicultural values into history education is essential for raising students' awareness of cultural pluralism and fostering tolerance and social cohesion attitudes. Methodology: In this study, we used a qualitative approach, distributing questionnaires to history teachers to collect data. We analysed the data in three stages: data reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. Main Findings: The result of this study is a new learning model called Harmonis. The syntax of this model consists of five stages: learning instruction, concrete experience, reflection, communication, and evaluation. Based on the study's results, previous studies and findings in the field indicate that no specific model elaborates on local history and multicultural education in schools. This prompted the researchers to present an innovation, namely the Harmonis learning model. The Harmonis model can be applied in local history-based learning processes by exploring the surrounding environment and identifying multicultural values that can be taught to students. Novelty/Originality of this study: The Harmonis model bridges the needs of prospective professional teachers who want to teach multiculturalism contextually. The existence of this model is an innovation because several previous learning models have not been able to integrate local history and multiculturalism in a meaningful way.
