Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to analyze the struggle for women's idealism in modern Javanese literature. The approach used is ideological hegemony and content analysis methods to classify and analyze data from one classical Javanese literary work and two modern Javanese literary works, namely "Serat Wulang Putri" by Nyai Adisara, Novel "Larasati Modern" by Sri, "Katresnan" by Soeratman Sastradihardja, and "Nona Sekretaris" by Suparto Brata. The results of the study show that the development of women's idealistic thinking begins with an inner strength that is patient and accepts the rights of the husband, to become equal friends with men. In the classical period, a restriction only focused on the domestic realm. Even though the reality of the domestic realm still existed in later times, those who had education, independence, and personal wisdom became part of the renewal process. As for the older generation, there is friction over traditional customs in society. What used to be a fixed standard of action has been adapted by itself along with educational developments and foreign cultural influences. Keywords: Ideology, hegemony, women, Javanese Culture, Modern Javanese Literature.

Abstract

The management of Pakel Hamlet, Karangpandan, as a tourism destination began in 2017 through a collaboration between the local community and the Isy Karima Islamic Boarding School empowerment team, forming the Language Tourism Village (Kampung Wisata Bahasa/KWB). The village thrived in 2019 with its flagship programs in English, Japanese, and Arabic learning. However, the number of visitors declined during the 2020–2022 pandemic. In early 2024, the village underwent a rebranding process, becoming the Barokah Tourism Village (Kampung Wisata Barokah). This study aims to analyze the ecocultural-based intercultural communication strategies and Javanese local wisdom values that support its promotion and rebranding efforts. A qualitative method was employed, using in-depth interviews as the primary data collection technique. The findings reveal that: (1) the intercultural communication strategy harmonizes two strong cultural elements, namely Islamic boarding school and Javanese rural traditions; (2) it integrates key cultural elements such as language, collective historical memory, religious values, and Javanese local wisdom; and (3) its implementation in promotion and rebranding is strengthened by the development of agrarian, local cultural, and wellness-based tourism concepts.

Abstract

One version of the history of Art Reog Ponorogo that has appeared in Ponorogo since the days of the Wengker Kingdom, in which the kingdom still adheres to Hindu-Buddhist beliefs, With the passage of time and the spread of Islam to the Ponorogo area, brought by Raden Bathoro kathong and accompanied by various teachings, cultures, and religious dogmas, there was a process of shifting and acculturation of the ritual traditions and customs of the Ponorogo people from Hindu-Buddhist teachings to Islamic teachings gradually. This study aims to determine the process of acculturation of Islamic culture to the art of Reog Ponorogo and to know the supporting factors, opportunities, and constraints. The method used in this research is grounded research. The results of this study show that the process of acculturation of Islamic culture in the Reog Ponorogo art began with the spread of Islam in Ponorogo brought by Raden Batoro Katong, and this process runs very smoothly and can coexist between Islamic culture and Reog Ponorogo art. The existence of supporting factors in the form of the number of existing Islamic institutions and the majority of people who have embraced Islam led to the opportunity of the acculturation process being very large, and obstacles that hinder the process are the limited funds for the procurement of art components (Reog Ponorogo).

The research methods employed include qualitative data frominterviews, direct observations, and literature analysis to provide a deep understanding of the cultural values and beliefs of the Jepara community embedded in Lomban. The findings show that Lomban is not merely a customary ceremony but also a reflection of the harmoniousrelationship between humans and nature, playing a significant role in preserving local cultural identity. The implications of this research underscore the importance of preserving and honoring cultural traditions as an integral part of Indonesia's cultural heritage.

Abstract

For this reason, in conducting research, researchers combine data from the findings of data in the field, with theories and literature data related to the object of research. Data collection efforts are carried out interactively through in-depth interview methods, and are carried out continuously until they reach data saturation. As for the determination of sources, researchers used purposive sampling technique, which is a sampling technique based on certain considerations. The results of the study found three powers of Javanese leadership, namely the power of authority, the power of wisdom or kawicaksanan, and the spiritual power or kawaskithan represented in the accompaniment of Reog Ponorogo music. All of these lead to the concept of Panaragan, or the concept of understanding one's identity. Keywords: Warok, Reog Ponorogo, Panaragan, Javanese Leadership

Abstract

This article explores the mystical philosophy of Javanese poet Kyai Yasadipura and its relevance as a cultural foundation for achieving world peace. The study aims to examine how Javanese mystical values, as expressed in Yasadipura’s literary works, can offer ethical and spiritual insights for contemporary global challenges. Using a hermeneutic qualitative method, this research interprets selected classical texts by Yasadipura through the lens of Javanese theological philosophy, focusing on symbolic expressions, ethical teachings, and metaphysical perspectives rooted in Javanese mysticism (kebatinan). The findings reveal that Yasadipura’s mysticism emphasizes inner harmony (rasa sejati), humility (andap asor), balance between the material and the spiritual (lahir–batin), and unity with the divine (manunggaling kawula lan Gusti). These concepts are not only spiritually profound but also culturally transformative, reflecting a worldview that prioritizes peace through personal enlightenment and collective moral awakening. This study contributes to cultural studies by positioning Javanese mysticism as a viable philosophical framework for global peace education. It also enriches discourses in Javanese Sufism, showing how local Islamic-Javanese synthesis in literature carries universal ethical values. Furthermore, the article offers insights into character education, suggesting that ancestral wisdom, when reinterpreted, can guide the formation of peaceful, empathetic, and spiritually aware individuals in the global era. Yasadipura’s mysticism affirms that cultural heritage can be a powerful tool to promote harmony—not only among individuals, but also across civilizations.

Abstract

The annual Sekaten tradition in the Kasunanan Surakarta Palace illustrates how traditional religious practices continue to adapt to modern life. Originally intended to spread Islam and preserve Javanese culture, Sekaten has shifted toward a blend of entertainment, tourism, and digital engagement. While previous research has mostly examined its historical, sociological, and ritual aspects, there is still limited study on how Sekaten functions as a non-formal educational space, especially for young people. This study addresses that gap by exploring how the younger generation interprets the changing meaning of Sekaten. Using qualitative methods historical and phenomenological approaches supported by document analysis, observation, and interviews with youth and palace officials the research finds that Sekaten is increasingly viewed through recreational and commercial lenses. As a result, its religious value is gradually declining. Today, young people tend to see Sekaten mainly as a site of entertainment and digital cultural expression. The study concludes that these shifts reflect broader social and cultural transformations. It recommends a balanced preservation strategy that maintains traditional sacred elements while adapting to the needs of modern youth in education.
