Abstract

This research investigates the strategic implementation of local potential through digital communication channels at the Omah Wayang tourism village in Sidowarno Village, Juwiring District, Klaten Regency. The study addresses the critical challenge of underutilized cultural resources and tourism potential within the region, with particular emphasis on Omah Wayang, a community organization dedicated to preserving and transmitting the philosophical and artistic values of traditional shadow puppetry (wayang). More than just an art form, wayang embodies profound Javanese wisdom such as pitutur luhur (moral advice), balance (keseimbangan), and harmony (rukun), which are continually passed down through intergenerational learning at Omah Wayang. Through a qualitative descriptive methodology, incorporating systematic field observations and in-depth stakeholder interviews, this research examines indigenous assets such as traditional crafts, culinary heritage, and cultural performances. The investigation expands beyond puppetry to explore how broader cultural expressions can be strategically incorporated into digital communication practices. The findings present actionable strategies for enhancing tourism visibility through culturally grounded digital platforms while ensuring the authenticity and sustainability of local traditions. This study contributes to local economic revitalization and the preservation of intangible heritage, offering a replicable digital communication framework that bridges traditional knowledge systems with contemporary tourism promotion. The research emphasizes the importance of community-based institutions like Omah Wayang in mediating between cultural continuity and innovation in the digital era

Abstract

Javanese society deeply embraces the supernatural, with cultural belief in forming a core of their cultural identity. However, a comprehensive understanding of the roots of this belief system within Javanese culture remains limited, particularly in how myths and folklore intersect with historical and cultural contexts to shape contemporary supernatural worldviews. This study aimed to elucidate the formation, evolution, and integration of supernatural beliefs into the daily lives of Javanese people, addressing a significant research gap in Indonesian cultural studies. Employing a cross-sectional approach with qualitative analysis, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with eight knowledgeable individuals from Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java, and participant observation in Yogyakarta museums and cultural centers. The analysis revealed that myths and mystics folklore often serve as explanations for unexplained natural phenomena, fostering a complex cosmology where spirits and supernatural forces are integral to everyday existence. The prevalence of these narratives is significantly shaped by Java's historical and cultural trajectory. This study underscores the enduring significance of traditional beliefs in Javanese society and contributes novel insights into the intersection of folklore, history, and contemporary supernatural worldviews in Indonesia. Future research could explore the impact of contemporary influences like popular culture, social media, and globalization on these perceptions and engagements

Abstract

This article contains changes in the meaning of the sekaten tradition from time to time, especially in this modern era. Data was obtained through a descriptive qualitative research method which is a natural research and the data produced is descriptive. The research is expected to be able to reveal the shift in the meaning of sekaten in the current era. The results of this study obtained that the sekaten upacra comes from the da'wah method carried out by the guardians and the symbols used in the sekaten traditional ceremony have Javanese Philosophy values. Through ritual symbols, the meaning contained is communicated by the community in a sustainable manner even though the times have changed, not changing the original meaning of the sekaten ceremony. Through this ceremony, a communication ritual process occurs so as to pass on the understanding of the meaning of good values to the community. The conclusion of this study shows that the Sekaten Ceremony is a complex cultural practice, which combines elements of Islamic beliefs, community interaction, and the transmission of traditional values and practices. These traditions are a testament to the region's rich cultural heritage and the continued importance of these traditions in people's lives.

Abstract

This study explores the practice of cultural commodification as a strategic approach to revitalize museum-based cultural tourism, focusing on the Wayang Beber Sekartaji Museum in Pacitan, East Java. The research investigates how cultural elements, particularly wayang beber, are transformed into tourism attractions that appeal to contemporary audiences. Drawing on an exploratory qualitative method, data were collected through field observations and in-depth interviews with the museum's founder, Indra Suroinggeno, complemented by literature reviews of relevant academic works and cultural tourism reports. The findings reveal two key forms of commodification: Wayang Beber Pancasila, which integrates national ideological values into traditional visual narratives, and Kerta Dluwang, a handmade paper medium repurposed as both artwork and merchandise. These adaptations function not only as economic assets, but also as communicative tools to reintroduce local philosophy and cultural identity to the public. Rather than diminishing authenticity, the commodification at Sekartaji Museum serves as a medium for cultural reinterpretation—balancing preservation with innovation. This study underscores that when rooted in community agency and cultural knowledge, commodification can contribute to museum sustainability, increase visitor engagement, and strengthen the socio-cultural position of traditional art forms within the tourism landscape

Abstract

The existence of Islamic boarding schools in society is not only an Islamic educational institution but also develops local Pesantren culture as an effort to develop society and maintain the preservation of Javanese culture. What are the efforts of the Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School in empowering the community to preserve Javanese culture? This research is descriptive qualitative; data collection was carried out through observation, deep interviews, and documentation about the religious education of the Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School. Data analysis uses an interactive analysis model: data reduction, data delivery, and conclusion drawing. Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School is a modern Javanese cultural-style Islamic boarding school founded in Wonogiri in 2010. The Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School aims to preserve Javanese culture and local wisdom, strengthening Islamic and Indonesian discourse. Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School, as a center for community empowerment, is a driving force for social, cultural, and religious change. The character of the Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School, which is integrated with society, becomes a cultural and Islamic filter for developments in the world outside itself. The Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School carries out two mandates, al-amanah al-diniyah, and al-amanah al-tsaqofah, so there is no conflict between religion and culture. The distinctive character of the Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School, which is based on Javanese culture, provides an important understanding for the community that Islam and Javanese culture do not have to be confronted. Religion and culture are like two sides of a coin that strengthen each other. Religion is a source of values, soul, and spirit, while Javanese culture provides a forum for developing these values. Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School is a washilah for passing on Javanese culture to the millennial generation and society in general through training in Javanese gamelan, puppetry, and forming Mandraguna klenengan. Apart from that, Javanese culture is also used as nadhoman to carry out Islamic da'wah through songs and gamelan. Formal education through a local content curriculum is routinely carried out by the Hanacaraka Islamic Boarding School community and students, practicing Javanese culture such as gamelan, klenengan, wayangan, and Javanese syi'iran. Meanwhile, through non-formal education, preserving Javanese culture using Javanese poetry or songs containing direct religious teachings maintains culture so it does not become timeless.
