Abstract

Island micro-destinations in emerging economies often have abundant natural resources but face governance challenges and lack effective diagnostic tools. This research introduces the initial empirical application of the weighted destination performance index (WDPI) based on the 13A framework, which includes Awareness, Attractiveness, Availability, Access, Appearance, Activities, Assurance, Appreciation, Action, Accountability, Accommodation, Amenities and Ancillary Services, and Altruism. The case study on Pigago Island, West Sumatra, Indonesia, uses a mixed-methods approach, structured observation, interviews with 25 participants, and systematic Instagram content analysis of 100 posts, rating each attribute on a 1-5 scale and weighting them via expert elicitation. The WDPI advances understanding of destination competitiveness by addressing the natural asset trap, in which high natural capital hinders investment in governance and scenic assets fail to translate into lasting visitor benefits. Pigago's WDPI score of 2.66 classifies it as an Emerging Destination. Key contributions include a replicable diagnostic tool, a phased investment plan with institutional roles, and an attribute-weighting protocol suitable for resource-limited settings. While designed for island micro-destinations, this framework is adaptable to various destination types, and initial validation encourages further comparisons.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of Memorable Tourism Experiences (MTEs) on Place Attachment and Behavioral Intentions among visitors to the Geological Museum of Bandung, Indonesia. A quantitative approach was employed using a survey of museum visitors selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from established scales and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM). The findings reveal that memorable tourism experiences significantly enhance visitors emotional attachment to the destination and positively influence their future behavioral intentions. Visitors who perceive their museum experiences as enjoyable, meaningful, novel, and educational are more likely to develop stronger emotional bonds with Bandung and demonstrate favorable behavioral responses, including revisit intentions and positive recommendations. The study highlights the strategic role of memorable experiences in strengthening museum attractiveness and fostering long-term visitor relationships. These findings contribute to museum tourism literature and provide practical implications for enhancing visitor experience management.

Abstract

This study investigates the role of event-based tourism in enhancing destination competitiveness, with a case study of the Semarak Pandawa Festival at Pandawa Beach, Badung, Bali, Indonesia. A sequential exploratory mixed methods design was employed, combining in-depth interviews with five key informants selected through purposive sampling, participatory observation, and a survey of 200 festival visitors using accidental sampling with daily quotas. A 20-item questionnaire adapted from Dwyer and Kim's (2003) destination competitiveness framework measured four dimensions: event attractiveness, visitor experience quality, destination image, and perceived economic value. Findings indicate a combined mean score of 4.13 (high category), confirming the festival's positive contribution to all four dimensions of destination competitiveness. Visitor experience quality recorded the highest score (M = 4.31), while perceived economic value scored lowest (M = 3.87), highlighting price inconsistency and infrastructure limitations as key areas for improvement. This study extends the Dwyer-Kim framework by demonstrating that community-managed cultural festivals serve as core competitive assets in post-pandemic destination recovery, offering applicable insights for event-based destination management.
