Abstract

This study analyzes the feasibility of the natural tourism attraction of Danau Ngade in Ternate, Indonesia, by evaluating eight key criteria: attractiveness, accessibility, accommodation, visitor facilities, market potential, clean water availability, environmental conditions, and management quality. A descriptive–exploratory qualitative approach was employed, supported by a scoring technique based on the modified ODTWA guidelines of the Directorate General of PHKA (2003) and the feasibility calculation formula by Putri et al. (2019). Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that Danau Ngade achieves an overall feasibility score of 78.898%, indicating that the destination is generally feasible and holds high development potential. Components such as attractiveness, accessibility, accommodation, visitor facilities, and environmental quality obtained high scores, demonstrating strong physical and ecological potential. However, the management, maintenance, and service components recorded low feasibility, highlighting weaknesses in organizational structure, service quality, and facility upkeep. The study concludes that while Danau Ngade has significant natural and market advantages, strengthening institutional capacity and improving service standards are essential to ensure sustainable development. These findings contribute to the understanding of feasibility assessment in small lake-based destinations and provide practical insights for improving tourism management and planning.

Abstract

This study explores the everyday work practices of women who own and manage family-based homestays in Sayan Village, Ubud, Bali. The research aims to describe the operational roles undertaken by female owner-managers and examine how these responsibilities intersect with their domestic routines. A qualitative descriptive design was employed, involving in-depth interviews and non-participant observations with eight women who have operated their homestays for five to fifteen years. The findings indicate that women carry out a wide range of tasks, including housekeeping, breakfast preparation, guest relations, booking communication, and basic financial documentation. These responsibilities are performed alongside ongoing domestic duties, creating a continuous rhythm of household and tourism work within the same spatial and temporal setting. The study shows that women’s hands-on involvement forms the core of homestay service delivery and underpins the personalized atmosphere characteristic of family-run accommodations. These findings contribute to a deeper understanding of micro-level tourism labor in rural Bali and highlight the essential role of women in sustaining homestay quality.

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformative typologies of female leadership in Balinese tourism villages through the lens of Social Representation Theory. Despite their vital role in community-based tourism, women remain underrepresented in formal governance due to patriarchal norms. Employing a qualitative phenomenological design, the study examines the lived experiences of three key female leaders in Tista, Sayan, and Klecung. The findings identify three distinct typologies: Environmental Awareness Leadership (ecological stewardship), Professionalized Leadership (digital and managerial competence), and Community Empowerment Leadership (cultural and economic collectivism). Through these roles, women reconstruct their social representations shifting from domestic figures to strategic public actors by re-anchoring leadership within local cultural values. This research contributes to gendered tourism scholarship by reconceptualizing Balinese women not merely as agents of change, but as "custodians of change," capable of synergizing cultural preservation with modern tourism management.

Abstract

This research analyzes tourist perceptions of beach club service products in Badung Regency, focusing on four key dimensions: food quality, service quality, atmosphere, and pricing. The study aims to examine how these components collectively shape visitor evaluations within experiential tourism settings. A descriptive quantitative design was employed, with data collected through Likert-scale questionnaires completed by 100 beach club visitors in Badung Regency. The instrument measured perceptions across four variables operationalized from established hospitality and tourism literature. Descriptive statistical analysis was used to calculate mean scores and identify patterns in perceptions. All dimensions received positive evaluations within the “agree” category. Atmosphere recorded the highest mean score (4.23), followed by service quality (4.07), food quality (4.04), and pricing (3.86). The findings indicate that experiential elements particularly ambiance and interpersonal service interactions are the primary determinants of visitor satisfaction, while pricing remains the most sensitive dimension. Beach clubs in Badung Regency successfully deliver experience-oriented services that align with contemporary leisure tourism trends. The results underscore the importance of maintaining consistent, immersive service design to strengthen competitiveness in the coastal tourism industry. This research contributes to understanding behavioral tendencies in beach club tourism and provides insights for improving service strategies.

Abstract

This study analyzed the implementation of the green hotel concept by hotels in Sanur, Bali, and its contribution to building a sustainable coastal tourism ecosystem. While Sanur is renowned for its tranquil environment and successful community-based tourism, the application of green practices within its hotel industry remains under-explored and inconsistent. Using qualitative methods, including interviews with hotel management and direct observation, this research identified key initiatives and the challenges hotels face in adopting sustainable practices. The findings revealed that several hotels have implemented sustainable practices in five key areas: hotel environment, energy use, tourist education, amenities, and waste management. Initiatives range from utilizing green open spaces and local building materials to using refillable amenities and composting organic waste. Some hotels also engage in community-based programs, such as providing free traditional dance training for local children. Hotels faced significant obstacles, primarily a lack of awareness among staff and guests, limited funding for higher operational costs, and the absence of clear government regulations and incentives. This study concludes that a more structured and collaborative approach is needed and supported by synergy between local government, hotel associations, and the community to provide training, monitoring, and promotion.

Abstract

The increasing adoption of digital marketing in tourism has encouraged destinations to utilize social media and influencer marketing as strategic tools to attract visitors. However, previous studies have largely examined the effects of social media, influencers, and destination attractiveness separately, providing limited understanding of how these factors jointly influence tourist visitation behavior, particularly in community-based tourism destinations. Addressing this gap, this study develops an integrated framework based on Digital Marketing Theory, Source Credibility Theory, and Tourism Attraction Theory to analyze the influence of social media, influencers, and destination attractiveness on tourist visits to Tukad Bindu, Kesiman Village, Bali. Using a quantitative survey approach, data were collected from 140 respondents through questionnaires and analyzed using validity and reliability tests, classical assumption tests, and multiple linear regression analysis. The results reveal that social media, influencers, and destination attractiveness each have a positive and significant effect on tourist visits, while simultaneously explaining 72.4% of the variation in visitation behavior. Among these variables, destination attractiveness demonstrates the strongest influence on tourists’ decisions to visit. This study contributes to the tourism literature by integrating digital promotion factors and destination attributes into a single analytical model, thereby extending existing knowledge on tourist behavior in community-based tourism contexts. The findings also provide practical implications for destination managers to strengthen social media engagement, establish strategic collaborations with credible influencers, and continuously enhance destination attractiveness to support sustainable growth in tourist visits.

Abstract

This study investigates the sustainopreneurship readiness of Indonesia's Generation Z in the tourism sector, integrating the Theory of Planned Behavior, Self-Determination Theory, and the Triple Bottom Line framework. An explanatory mixed-method design was employed with 100 tourism students from two universities in Bali, Cronbach's a = 0.882. Descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, Spearman rank-order correlations, and thematic analysis were applied to quantitative and open-ended data. Results reveal that 84% of respondents expressed entrepreneurial interest (M = 4.30, SD = 0.76), with no statistically significant demographic variation across gender [x2(1) = 0.784, p = .376], age [X2(1) = 0.041, p = .840], or education level [X2(1) = 2.607, p = .106]. Digital technology and sustainability emerged as deeply integrated orientations (rs = .528, p < .001). However, capital access constraints (72%), regulatory barriers (57%), and managerial inexperience (65%) create a significant intention-behavior gap. This study advances the sustainopreneurship literature by distinguishing high dispositional readiness from insufficient structural ecosystem readiness among Generation Z in Indonesia.

Abstract

Historic urban heritage areas are key resources for cultural tourism but often face challenges of functional obsolescence and underutilization. Existing studies, however, often examine adaptive reuse from architectural or tourism perspectives separately, with limited integration between these dimensions. This study examined how design-based adaptive reuse of heritage buildings contributes to cultural tourism development in Kota Lama Surabaya by analyzing functional repositioning, design mediation, and tourism value structuring as interconnected processes shaping tourism outcomes. A qualitative multi-case study approach was employed, focusing on four heritage buildings representing different cultural zones. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and document analysis, and analyzed using within-case and cross-case comparative methods. The findings reveal that adaptive reuse operates as an integrated interaction-based system rather than a linear transformation. Functional repositioning redefines the role of heritage buildings within socio-economic and tourism systems, while design mediation translates these changes into spatial experiences and cultural narratives. Tourism value emerges through the interplay of economic, experiential, and symbolic dimensions, which are often characterized by inherent tensions. This study proposes a multi-layered design-tourism interface framework, demonstrating that the effectiveness of adaptive reuse depends on the alignment between function, design, and value. Through integrating design and tourism perspectives, the study contributes to adaptive reuse literature by conceptualizing heritage transformation as an interconnected socio-spatial and experiential process within tourism systems.

Abstract

The accelerated growth of remote work has precipitated a surge in digital nomadism, engendering novel opportunities for destinations that are conducive to supporting location-independent professionals. The present study employs a qualitative descriptive approach to examine the potential of Tetebatu tourism village in East Lombok, Indonesia, to develop as a rural digital nomad destination. The data presented herein was collected through a combination of semi-structured interviews with international visitors, field observations, and document analysis. The analysis was conducted utilizing a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats) framework. The findings indicate that Tetebatu possesses significant strengths, including scenic natural landscapes, cultural authenticity, community hospitality, and relatively stable internet connectivity. Nevertheless, structural limitations, including the absence of co-working spaces, limited English proficiency, inadequate transportation infrastructure, and national regulation (visa) constrain its implementation. Externally, the global rise of remote working and increasing demand for sustainable rural tourism present substantial opportunities, while competition from established hubs, environmental risks, and regulatory uncertainties remain key threats. This study contributes to the literature by extending the analysis of digital nomadism beyond an urban context and highlighting the role of rural destinations in the development of sustainable tourism.
