Abstract

This research aims at analyzing the occurrence of flouting the conversational maxims in the musical fantasy movie Beauty and the Beast. The study uses qualitative methods and intends to answer five research questions. The first question to answer is how often the conversational maxims are flouted in the movie. The research finds one hundred two conversations that contain flouting of the conversational maxims. The second to answer is what types of conversational maxims are flouted in the conversations in the movie. The research shows that twenty-eight conversations flout maxim of quantity, thirty-six conversations flout maxim of quality, eighteen flouts maxim of relation or relevance, and twenty conversations flout maxim of manner. The third question to answer is who flout the conversational maxims in the movie. The study reveals that sixteen characters flout the conversational maxims. Then the fourth question to answer is the characters’ reasons of flouting the conversational maxims in the movie. The research shows that the speaker flouts the maxim for various reasons according to what maxim that is flouted. Finally, this research also intends to find out the implicatures of the characters’ utterances when they flout the conversational maxims in the movie. The analysis shows that flouting of conversational maxims always generates implicature or hidden meaning. This implied meaning varies based on the speaker’s intention and the type of maxim that he/she flouts.

Abstract

Humour is supposed to create hilarity or amusement either in conversation or in a comedy show. Some strategies are needed to deliver successful jokes. This research intends to recommend sequential organization as a strategy in doing stand-up comedy by analyzing a video that showed Jimmy O Young solo performance, a Chinese descent who has American citizenship. By using qualitative method this research is intended to answer two research questions. The first is which sequential organization proposed by Scarpetta & Spagnolli (2009) do fit Jimmy O Young stand up performance. And the second is how does he perform them in his stand-up performance. The results shows that Jimmy O Young fits all sequential organizations proposed by Scarpetta & Spagnolli (2009), and he performs his show very successfully by using informal registers, use his family and personal life experiencies as topic jokes, and always refers punchline to himself, rather than referring to the audience.

Abstract

This research aims at analyzing violation and flouting the conversational maxims that occurred in the situation comedy 2 Broke Girls: The Two Opening, Season 6, Episode 1. The study uses qualitative methods and intends to answer four research questions, i.e., kinds of maxims that are violated, kinds of maxims that are flouted, characters who violate and flout the maxims, and reasons of violating and flouting the maxims. The theory used is Grice’s theory of cooperative principle, conversational maxims, and implicature. This research used qualitative method. The result of the analysis showed that violation and flouting of the conversational maxims appeared in the 2 Broke Girls. Thirty-one data were found. Twelve data contains violation, and nineteen data contains flouting. All the maxims were violated and flouted, i.e., maxim quantity, quality, relation, and manner. The speaker violated and flouted the maxim for various reasons according to what maxim that was violated and flouted. Almost all characters violated and/or flouted the maxims.

Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) plays a role in criticizing injustice. News that contains injustice can be the object of CDA's research. This study aims to describe language constructions in writing online news related to the Kanjuruhan riots in Tempo.co and Bola.com. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this study intends to answer three problems: first, how the riot events published in the two online media are described from a semiotic aspect according to Norman Fairclough's theory. Second, how is the discourse practice related to the news of the Kanjuruhan riots depicted in Tempo.co and Bola.com. Third, how sociocultural politics related to the news of the Kanjuruhan riots is described in the two media. The results of the study concluded that riots were described as social irregularities, discourse practices describing obstacles in overcoming riots did not represent all related sosial orders, and information on the part of victims was less written in both online media.

Abstract

Mastery of English has become one of the significant requirements for interacting with other individuals, especially in the work environment. This has become a necessity for almost all employees who work in various sectors to use English as a means of communication. The expectation to use English has also been noticed by security officers, especially those who work in busy business areas. This study focused on needs analysis to identify the demand for security guards for English. The Design and Development Research approach was used in this investigation. A survey was conducted to determine the security guards' linguistic requirements. Following that, the statistical data were examined and used to create a syllabus that centered on resources and activities for the students. A semi-structured interview was also done to provide adequate understanding and comments on the materials and activities chosen. The importance of English in the workplace has been discovered. The most important skills they employ to support their profession as security guards are listening and speaking. Roleplaying and text-based language instructions are recommended as stimulating and meaningful strategies for learners to acquire the target language.

Abstract

Writing is important in the implementation of learning. This is one of the main focuses that need to be mastered to create maximum learning. However, the weak writing ability of students can be a problem. Therefore, relevant learning methods are needed in learning activities. Looking at these problems, the researchers uses the project-based learning method to make it easier for students to practice their writing skills. The implementation of this research is to see the development of students' writing skills using the project-based learning method in the 11th class at SMA Pahlawan Toha Bandung in the 2020/2021 academic year. In obtaining the data, the researchers use a qualitative descriptive method. From the data obtained, the researchers obtains the results: (1) the project-based learning method is recommended enough to be used because it is considered effective. (2) the project- based learning method is considered to improve students' abilities, especially in creativity as well as self-confidence and group ability. (3) Students' writing ability is improved. From these results, it can be said that using the project-based learning method in the learning process can improve the writing skills of 11th class students at SMA Pahlawan Toha Bandung.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui kelas kata dan makna yang dihasilkan dari proses pembentukan sufiks -an pada kata terterntu. Data pada penelitian ini berupa ujaran-ujaran pada percakapan sekelompok ibu rumah tangga di kawasan Paseban Tengah, Jakarta Pusat. Penulis menggunakan teori oleh Chaer (2007) dan Muhajir (1992) dalam Burhanuddin, dkk (2020). Hasil penelitian menemukan adanya delapan proses pembentukan kata dengan sufiks -an beserta maknanya, yaitu 1) pembentukan sufiks -an yang diikuti oleh akar kata adjectival bermakna menyatakan sesuatu ’lebih’; 2) pembentukan sufiks -an yang diikuti oleh verbal transitif memiliki makna sebagai pembentuk kata kerja benda deverbal yang sangat produktif dan sebagai pembentuk aspek makna statif kepada kata kerja transitif yang menjadi pembentuk dasarnya dan menyatakan suatu kegiatan terus menerus; 3) pembentukan sufiks -an diikuti verbal semitransitif bermakna sebagai kata kerja resiprokal dan menyatakan suatu pekerjaan yang sudah menjadi kebiasaan; 4) pembentukan sufiks -an diikuti akar kata verbal transitif bermakna sebagai pembentuk kata benda dan sebagai pembentuk kata kerja dengan makna leksikal baru; 5) pembentukan sufiks -an diikuti bentuk dasar nominal yang bermakna sebagai kata kerja intransitif denominal yang menyatakan jenis-jenis penyakit atau menyatakan arti menderita penyakit yang disebut sebagai bentuk dasar, bermakna menyatakan arti arah atau tempat menghasilkan bentuk kata yang berdistribusi paralel dengan kata kerja perintah; 6) pembentukan sufiks -an diikuti pronominal bermakna menyatakan ’seperti’; 7) pembentuk sufiks -an diikuti keterangan waktu yang bermakna penegasan pada keterangan dan nama waktu; 8) sufiks -an diikuti nama bilangan yang bermakna menyatakan ’bersama dalam suatu jumlah’ atau menyatakan satuan jumlah.

Abstract

This journal article is based on an annotated translation research. The object of the research is a text with a title of the ‘Slow Violence’ of Malnutrition in South Africa published by Unicef South Africa. The purpose of this research are: 1) To identify the problems encountered by the researchers during the translation process. 2) To offer the solution to solve the problems during the translation process. This study employed a descriptive qualitative research methodology. The result of the research consists of two main point. First, the findings reveals that from fifteen difficult problems, both in word and phrase levels, the author focused and selected nine items for annotations. Second, those problems were solved by several translation theories from Newmark and Vinay and Darbelnet.

Abstract

This research aimed to see the use of language variety in the Kelompok KCKR Perpustakaan Nasional RI. The data was taken by recording some utterances by the employees during their daily interactions. The method used is qualitative with the theory by Wardhaugh (2006). The result showed that speakers used formal and informal words in talking to different addressees, regarding their age, distance among speakers, and position. There are certain words used to show solidarity, to show the ethnics’ belonging, and to be clear in their conversations.

Abstract

The aim of the research was to describe the tense and aspects of the President’s utterances during his speech at the inauguration ceremony. It was a kind of descriptive qualitative research method. It only focused on describing tense and aspects in a spoken context. The theory used was a theory about tense and aspect by Saeed, Kreidler, and Comrie. Data were taken from YouTube’s official website. The result of the analysis found that the utterances uttered by President Joko Widodo consist of the future tense with the perfective aspect that shows a future situation or condition that does not exist yet, past tense action and the actions that have stopped or finished, and also present tense. In addition, the aspects found in President’s utterances consist of a progressive aspect with complete and incomplete action with future action that aims to be reached in the future, a perfect aspect with accomplishment action and with a complete action; and a progressive aspect with progressive incomplete actions.
