Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the use of Total Physical Response (TPR) method on early childhood English Language Teaching (ELT) at Panti Asuhan Yauma Jakarta and to know the students? response after learning English using TPR method. The method of the research is descriptive qualitative. In this research the researcher describes the activities carried out by teachers and students by using TPR method. The data resources are from teacher and students in Panti Asuhan Yauma Jakarta . The class consist of 6 students which their age was around  5 to 11 years old. The data collected through observation and interview both teacher and students. The instruments were pre-test and post-test with 2 (two) criterion being assessed, namely vocabulary and comprehension. They were divided into 6 (six) elements such as accuracy of word, understanding each word, word choice, understanding the meaning, speaking easily,and intonation. The results showed that there was any improvement on vocabulary score about 26.16 and comprehension score about 27.16. The research finding firstly showed the TPR method was able to be applied to children because they enjoyed and were also very active in learning English. The researcher hopes that the study contributes to the activities of teaching and learning English, especially teaching English for early childhood. It was proved by the score from pre-test and post-test.

Abstract

Slang can not only be found in daily conversation but it also can be found in literary work such as movies, for example in The Expendables 3 Movie which the characters’ use slang quite often in dialogues. The purpose of this paper is to study the function, type, and meaning of the slang terms used by the characters of The Expendables 3 movie. The researchers used descriptive qualitative method to analyze. After doing the analysis, the researchers found fifty-five slang terms and the details are as follows: (1) There are two types of slang, namely primary and secondary slang. The type which more often used is primary slang. (2) There are three types of functions: social, psychological and rhetorical functions (3) There are seven types of meaning of slang namely connotative, social, affective, collocative, conceptual, thematic and reflection meanings. Abstract

This research is used descriptive qualitative method which aims to identify the types and the dominant used of code-mixing in selected episodes on Boy William YouTube channel. The data collected from the dialogues in 3 (three) episodes then identified and classified into types of code-mixing based on the theory of Hoffman (1991). Based on Hoffman (1991) there 3 (three) types of code-mixing, they are intra sentential, intra lexical and involving a change of pronunciation. The result showed that there are 61 intra sentential code-mixing (78%), 9 intra lexical (9%) and 8 involving a change of pronunciation (8%). So, it can be concluded that dominant code-mixing in 3 (three) episodes on Boy William YouTube Channel is intrasentential. Keywords:  Code-Mixing, Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Youtube

Abstract

WhatsApp (WA) is one of the most popular messaging applications which can be accessed by using mobile phone and Personal Computer (PC). Nowadays, most people prefer to use this application for communicating with other. In education field, WhatsApp also give beneficial features such as text, call, send video, audio, links, location, document, and pictures. This research is aimed at observing WA which is tailored to support English Language Learning (ELL) activities.  For gathering data, this study applied case study using observation and questionnaire as main instrument.  A case study is drawn from participants of 5th semester students at English Department Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika. It is found that WA was significant in helping ELL activities since it was used by both teachers and students for ELL related activities. The results are: 1) In the field of technical advantages, WA provides simple operation; 2) WA can enhance learning opportunities outside classroom for students.  In brief, WA facilitated ELL activities as an effort toward MALL (Mobile-Assisted Language Learning) implementation.

Abstract

The data collected through observation in learning activities. The instruments were pre-test and post-test with 2 (two) criterion being assessed, namely vocabulary and comprehension. They were divided into 5 (five) elements such as accuracy of word, understanding each word, word choice, understanding the meaning, and speaking easily. The results showed that there was an improvement in vocabulary score about 27.40 and comprehension score about 28.77. The research finding first showed that when using the TPR method children enjoyed and were also very active in learning English. The researcher hopes that the study contributes to the activities of teaching and learning English, especially teaching English for young learners. It was proved by the score from pre-test and post-test.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has brought many significant aspects of human life, such as health, social, economy, and education as well. Temporarily, most government around the world have closed educational institution in order to reduce the spread of Covid-19. The Indonesian government appeals all elements of education to adapt and continue learning activities through online learning. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) as the newest learning way in the language education where applications or websites are used to facilitate students learning activities. Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) has been studied years by researchers in its connection with education related activities. This research will focus on its main purposes,that is teachers’ perceptions in mobile learning especially English language learning classroom activities. The method of the research was quantitative method which used 70 English teachers as research object. The data were collected through a 5-point Likert Scale questionnaire. The research found; the teachers’ majority had positive perception on the usage of MALL to support classroom activities, especially in learning English language in the middle of Covid-19 pandemic

Abstract

Characters in a film follow the storyline of the film itself. The audience must pay attention to all characters in a film. Those characters play how the story goes. This research aims to explore characters of Amy. Amy is a wife of Nick. Amy is a psychopath in film Gone Girl. The writer will analyze the character of Amy as a psychopath, the causes, and the effect of Amy’s psychopath to her husband. In analyzing the Amy’s psychopath character, the writer refers to McCord (1964) about characteristics of psychopath. They divide psychopath into six categories: Asocial, Uncontrolled Desires, Highly Impulsive, Aggressive, Feels little guilt and a warped capacity for love. Besides analyzing the characteristics of Amy’s psychopath, the writer also covers the causes that makes Amy’s psychopath. In terms of causes, the writer refers to the theory from Page and Coleman (1978). They divide the causes into two: family disruption and economic aspects. The result of the analysis shows that those six characteristics in the theory are found in Amy’s psychopath. While in terms of causes, that family disruption and economic aspects play important role on Amy’s psychopath. The more cause is by family disruption. Related to the effects of Amy’s psychopath to Nick, there are some events that push Nick to follow Amy’s desires.

Abstract

This research is presenting about human values as an element of fiction that applied in a movie entitled Chappie. The analysis is focus on finding how human values of main character that appear in the movie and the human values influence to the characterization of main character in Chappie movie. The methods of this research are descriptive qualitative method and library research to get the data. The data of this analysis are taken from Chappie movie directed by Neill Blomkamp. Furthermore, the researcher takes some theories from several books that related with the title to analyze human value of the main character in Chappie movie. The researcher is also identifies data and information from the theories. Hereafter, the researcher analyse the data to finds the problem to discuss deeply. The researcher uses basic human values theory by Shalom H. Schwartz.  The result of this analysis are human values appear of main character when Chappie has self-direction, tradition, stimulation, achievement, and universalism in his behaviour. Human values influence the characterization of main character when he takes attention, perception, interpretation in situations, and the planning of action in his life. Keywords: human value; main character; movie

Abstract

This research has the objectives proposed by the writers, they are: (1) To identify the types of figurative language used in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry, (2) to find out the meaning of figurative language used in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry, and (3) to know the mostly of figurative language that is used in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry in this research. Figurative language is one of the elements of poetry that has become the poets’ way of expressing the art of his poetry and communicating his language to know the poet’s idea. Figurative language can include many words and phrases, and there are several types of figurative language. The primary sources of data are the research is conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The data sources of this research are taken from the poetry by Kelly Darrow. Then the writersss classify the data using McKenzie’s theory of figurative language that support it. The results of this paper shows there are many types of figurative language in Kelly Darrow’s selected poetry. Kelly Darrow uses metaphor, simile, irony, personification, and hyperbole as figurative language.
