Abstract

This research aims at analyzing swear words found in animated situational comedy Family Guy, Season 15, Episode 15 and 17. The study aims to answer three research questions, i.e., the kinds of swear words, the reasons of using swear words, and the speaker-listener relation that elicits swear words. The theories used in analyzing the data are the theory of Michael Swan (1995) and Andrew Gray (2000). This study uses descriptive qualitative method. Thirteen data that contained swear words were found. Of these data, six kinds of swear words were found. They were exclamation of surprise, exclamation of annoyance, surprised question, insult, rejection, and intensifying adjective. There were two reasons that made the characters use swear words, i.e., to identify certain social class and to express emotion. However, the speaker-listener relation that made the speakers use swear words varied between relatives, friends, and strangers. Keywords: swear word, animated sitcom, Family Guy

Abstract

This research focused on analyzing flouting of maxims that were flouted by the characters in the Se7en movie script and the motivation of the characters flouted the maxims. This research used qualitative research method. The data of the research were in the form of utterances that contained flouting of maxim. The data were collected by downloading the movie and the script, watching the movie, and collecting the data from the script. The data analysis was conducted by organizing the data into narration, analyzing the data, and drawing the conclusion. The results of the research showed what types of maxims were flouted in the movie and what motivation that led the characters to flout the maxims. There are four flouting of maxims in the Se7en movie script; they are maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner.

Abstract

This article discussed the identification of speech acts through several dialogues between characters in Top Gun: Maverick. The aim of this study is to find out the types of speech acts used in Top Gun: Maverick. The data were utterances suspected to have speech acts uttered by this film's characters. The method used in this study is a qualitative descriptive method to classify speech acts used in Top Gun: Maverick. This study found three types of speech acts used in the Top Gun: Maverick film, namely expressive speech acts preferred form found one data and misery found one data, Perlocutionary speech acts form rejection found two data and directive speech acts.

Abstract

This research focuses on translation of idioms in a children's fairy tale with a title of The Ugly Duckling, written by Hans Christian Andersen from Denmark. In this fairy tale there are many interesting idioms to study. However, in the translation process there are challenges faced by the author, namely 1) Idioms do not have a direct equivalent in the target language. 2) Selects the right vocabulary in the target language so that it can be accepted among young readers. The research method in this journal article is a qualitative descriptive research methodology. The results of this study are as follows: produce translations that are commensurate with the source language by using free and communicative translation methods (Newmark, 1988). Even though the grammatical structure of the source text is not the same as the target text, the meaning contained in the target text is commensurate with the source text. Use simple vocabulary in the Target Language that is easy to understand by young age target readers.

Abstract

This research is to discuss Virginia Woolf's views on gender equality as well as the strengths and weaknesses of feminist theory. For feminist ideas, Woolf's debut novels A Room of One's Own and Orlando are crucial works. I'll attempt to focus on Virginia Woolf's book A Room of One's Own, which is regarded as her most significant work, especially in this study. Virginia Woolf produced several books and essays regarding gender discrimination. She focused mainly on equality. Woolf delivered several lectures on women in literature. In 1928, Woolf published Orlando, and in 1929, she published A Room of One's Own, her first work of feminism. She focused mainly on women and literature in this book; also, she described the difficulties they had encountered. In Orlando, she describes the struggle between genders.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to describe the functions of various utterances uttered by the candidates during the debate for the Jakarta Gubernatorial election. The study utilized a descriptive qualitative research approach, specifically focusing on describing spoken utterances. The theoretical framework applied was the theory of speech acts by Austin and Searle. Data were sourced from the Jakarta Gubernatorial debate during the regional election and downloaded from https://www.youtube.com/. The analysis revealed that the candidates used their utterances to inform the public about certain conditions in Jakarta using declarative utterances. They aimed to express their beliefs on various matters, hoping to influence their voters to share the same perspectives. The candidates predicted that they would transform Jakarta into a more modern and secure city, bringing prosperity within the next five years. They also expressed gratitude for favourable conditions while sometimes offering criticisms or complaints. Additionally, they highlighted positive attributes of others, showcasing mutual praise. Their utterances were intended to persuade or call upon the audience to take certain actions and commit to fighting against drug issues in Jakarta.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menjelaskan tentang jenis-jenis tindak tutur yang terdapat dalam suatu kepala berita di surat kabar serta pengaruh apa saja yang ditimbulkan dari suatu tuturan yang digunakan pada kepala berita di surat kabar tersebut. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian bersifat deskriptif kualitatif dengan menggunakan teori Austin dan Leech, sementara data diambil dari kepala berita surat kabar. Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa tidak semua jenis ilokusi digunakan dalam suatu kepala berita. Dalam penelitian ini penulis hanya menemukan tiga jenis ilokusi. Selain itu, penggunaan jargon tertentu juga memberikan perlokusi terhadap pembaca suatu berita.

Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze the interpretation of the Pocari Sweat advertisement 2020. The aims are to identify the interpretation meaning of the sentence in the advertisement itself, to identify the way that makes Pocari Sweat become an effective Advertisement that uses the narrative form, and to identify the effects of advertisement that uses the narrative explanation. The writer uses the theory of Dodd 2012 and Rossalotos 2015 to do the research. This research uses the qualitative method. The result of this research shows confidence, freedom, and spirit. Besides that, the way that makes this advertisement effective is the message, before it is too late and regrets getting old. In the conflict, there is a struggle with character confidence. The character, in this advertisement, is a character who builds and gives the message. The plot, this advertisement gives a sequence from the introduction, the conflict, and the result of the conflict itself. The last, the effects of this research provide a positive effect on teenagers. The research also found the moral values in this advertisement: Persistence, keep strong, and never give up.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze politeness strategies of request found in the utterances in Ballerina movie. It intends to answer three (3) research questions, namely the types of politeness strategies of request, the reason of using the politeness strategies of request, and the relation among the characters that use politeness strategies of request in Ballerina movie. The theory used in analyzing the data is the theory of Brown and Levinson (1987). This research uses descriptive qualitative method. Fourteen (14) cases of politeness strategies of request are found. Five (5) data contain bald on record strategies, four (4) data contain positive politeness strategies, two (2) data contain negative politeness strategies, and three (3) data contain off record strategies. The reasons why the characters use a politeness strategy depend on the type of politeness strategy that they use. The reason why the characters use bald on record strategy is because they want the hearers to do what they want immediately. The reason why the characters use positive politeness strategy is because they do not attempt to keep their distance with the hearers. Then the reason why the characters use negative politeness strategy is because they intend to ask the hearers to do something in a polite way. Finally, the reason the characters use off record strategy is because they want the hearers to be sensitive in order to understand what the speakers want. Regarding the last research question, which is the relations among the characters, the result shows that this also varies. The relations of the characters who use politeness strategy of request can be between close friends, teacher and student, people who have the same age, people who just met, owner and worker, or family who are not close with each other.

Abstract

This study discusses the function of humor in Trevor Noah's Stand-Up Comedy entitled I Wish You Would. The aims of this study are to examine the humor functions applied by Trevor Noah in his stand-up comedy and to contribute in filling the existing gaps . The first question to answer to what extent Trevor Noah’s SUC fit Hay (2000) humor’s function theory. The second question to answer how the utterances of Trevor Noah’s jokes fit the humor functions. The data in this research are oral data which is transcribed into written form. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. According to the study in the stand-up comedy entitled I wish I would, the writer found that Trevor Noah uses almost all aspects of humor function .
