Abstract

This research examines the phenomenon of fishermen's children dropping out of school in the southern coastal area of Jember Regency, East Java, from the perspective of cultural anthropology. The study aims to uncover the social, economic and cultural factors that influence the high dropout rate among fisher children, as well as its impact on the dynamics of coastal communities. Using ethnographic methods, the study collected data through participant observation, in-depth interviews and document analysis over a period of one year. The main findings show that economic factors, such as poverty and the need to help the family economy, are the dominant causes of school dropout. However, cultural factors such as the community's perception of education, the tradition of fishing from an early age, and the lack of highly educated role models also play a significant role. This study also reveals the impact of dropping out of school on the sustainability of the fishing profession, social mobility, and community adaptation patterns to environmental and economic changes. The results of this study provide new insights into the complexity of education issues in coastal communities and highlight the importance of a holistic approach in formulating education policies that are sensitive to the local socio-cultural context. The implications of this study can serve as a foundation for the development of more effective intervention programmes to increase school participation and retention among fisher children, and promote sustainable development.

Abstract

Creativity is a crucial aspect of early childhood development related to imaginative, exploratory, and original thinking abilities. This study aims to examine the effect of using colored corn seed loose parts media on creativity development in children aged 4-5 years. Loose parts media were chosen for their open-ended nature, accessibility, and strong visual and sensory appeal. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a pretest-posttest control group model. The sample consisted of 20 children divided into experimental (n=10) and control (n=10) groups. Data were collected through observation using a creativity assessment sheet based on indicators of fluency, flexibility, and originality. Statistical analysis using t-test showed a significant difference between the experimental and control groups, with t-value of 8.6048 and p = 0.000 (p < 0.05). The average gain score of the experimental group reached 27.7, while the control group only 18.2. These findings indicate that the use of colored corn seed loose parts has a significant positive impact on enhancing children's creativity. This study contributes to the development of environmentally friendly educational media based on local materials that support contextual learning in early childhood education settings.

Abstract

This qualitative study aims to examine the role of the People's School (Sekolah Rakyat) in expanding access to education for children from low-income families in Jember Regency. Despite government efforts to achieve educational equality, socioeconomic disparities remain a significant barrier, limiting access to quality education services, particularly for marginalized groups. Through interviews, observations, and document analysis, this study explores how the People's School—a free, community-initiated alternative school—contributes to addressing resource constraints, inadequate infrastructure, and digital exclusion experienced by students from poor families. The results indicate that the People's School plays a significant role in increasing school participation, strengthening students' basic academic skills, and enhancing community involvement in education delivery. Its flexible, community-based learning approach enables the school to respond to the learning needs of students at risk of dropping out and experiencing social marginalization. However, the sustainability of the People's School still faces challenges such as limited funding and infrastructure, and a lack of institutional recognition. These findings underscore the importance of partnerships between the government and communities to strengthen the function of People's Schools as an inclusive educational alternative to encourage social mobility and break the chain of intergenerational poverty. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This study was conducted with the aim of improving student activity and learning outcomes in ear drum material by applying interactive learning in fifth grade elementary school. This study used a classroom action research design with the Kemmis and McTaggart model, which was carried out in two cycles. There were several stages involved, namely planning, implementation of actions, observation, and reflection. The research subjects consisted of eight students. Data were collected through observation, learning outcome tests, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively to compare developments from the pre-cycle to the end of the action. The results of this study successfully showed a significant increase in both aspects measured. The average learning outcome score increased from 37.5 in the pre-cycle to 55 in cycle I and 77.5 in cycle II, with a learning accuracy rate of 87.5% at the end of the action. Student learning activities also improved from an average of 64.58% in cycle I to 85.42% in cycle II, especially in the indicator of concern for ear health, which experienced the most significant increase. These findings successfully demonstrate that interactive media-based learning can generate higher engagement and help students understand the concept of the eardrum more deeply. Thus, interactive learning can be an effective alternative strategy. Keywords: Interactive Learning, Learning Activities, Student Learning Outcomes
