Abstract

This study investigates the dynamics of advocacy and policy communication in the transformation of village administrative identity in Bungo Regency, Jambi Province. Changes in terms such as “Village Head to Rio”, “Village to Dusun”, and “Dusun to Kampung” have triggered tensions between the formal bureaucratic structure and the traditional socio-cultural systems. Employing a qualitative case study approach, the research reveals that community resistance stems not only from the policy content but also from the lack of two-way communication and limited participation of local actors in the policy-making and implementation processes. The study identifies instances of hybrid governance in which formal and customary institutions collaborate in governance practices. The findings underscore the importance of more participatory, community-based, and culturally sensitive advocacy and communication strategies to enhance public legitimacy of administrative identity transformation policies in villages. Keywords: Policy Communication, Village Advocacy, Administrative Transformation, Ethnogovernance.Kata Kunci: Komunikasi Kebijakan, Advokasi Desa, Transformasi Administratif, Etnogovernance, Kabupaten Bungo

Abstract

This research discusses counter-hegemony in satire within the content "Jual Beli Air Doa Para Habib with Guru Gembul – OFFSIDE BERAGAMA," produced by Tretan Muslim on the YouTube channel Tretan Universe. In this content, Tretan Muslim and Guru Gembul use satire and humor as their approach. This study employs a qualitative critical paradigm with a critical discourse analysis method by Norman Fairclough, which enables the researcher to explore how language and symbols in the video construct meaning and create narratives in the satire. YouTube has become a new space for society to access and simultaneously reconstruct religious discourse. The findings from the discourse include mystic rituals in religion, social and health critique discourses, marketing strategy discourse, mystic rituals and local culture, the commodification of religion through the sale of blessings, the legitimization of power through relics, and the discourse of discussion spaces. This research demonstrates that satire is not only a form of entertainment but also a form of resistance (counter-hegemony) against the commercialization of religion. Through satire, humor, and visual symbols, Tretan Muslim and Guru Gembul critique the practice of selling prayer water that misuses religious symbols for various interests. Abstract

Traditional herbal medicine is a cultural heritage product of Indonesia that is currently experiencing a decline in interest, particularly among Generation Z. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of marketing communication on the interest of Generation Z consumers in traditional herbal medicine in Balongsari Subdistrict, Surabaya. The theories used are the Marketing Communication Mix and the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to understand the factors influencing consumer interest. This research employs a descriptive quantitative approach by collecting data through questionnaires, followed by data analysis using SPSS with simple linear regression tests, t-tests, and Friedman tests. The results show that the effectiveness of marketing communication has a positive and significant influence on consumer interest, as indicated by the t-value being greater than the t-table value. It can be concluded that an increase in the Effectiveness of Marketing Communication (X) will help increase consumer interest (Y) among Generation Z in traditional herbal medicine products. In this study, effective marketing communication strategies can have a positive impact in attracting the attention and interest of Generation Z consumers towards traditional herbal medicine in Balongsari Subdistrict, Surabaya. Abstract

This study aims to determine how the consistent branding strategy of Hotel Ibis Styles Ao Nang Krabi is able to shape positive perceptions among Russian tourists and how these perceptions relate to travel agents' interest in partnership. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive type. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation from promotional media and guest reviews on digital platforms. The results of the study show that consistent branding in visual elements, communication style, and hotel service succeeds in creating a professional image that Russian tourists trust. This strengthens their decision to choose a hotel and recommend it. In addition, travel agents find it helpful because the hotel already has a strong brand identity and promotional materials that are ready to be used. Stable branding facilitates the process of cooperation and the preparation of attractive tour packages for foreign tourists, especially from Russia. These findings show that hotel branding not only shapes guest perception, but also becomes an important part of marketing and distribution communication strategies. This research provides practical insights for hotel managers and Communication Science students in understanding the role of brand communication in the hospitality industry. Keywords: Communication Strategy, Hospitality Industry, Hotel Branding, Russian Travelers, Travel Agent.

Abstract

This study analyzes the BBC docu-drama film, Krakatoa: The Last Days (2006), to uncover its strategy of postcolonial representation. Employing Roland Barthes' Semiotics to identify the underlying myth and the concept of The Sublime, the focus is on the narrative markers of Willem Beijerinck (the colonial figure) and Tokaya (the loyal and intelligent native clerk). The analysis reveals that the film strategically leverages the Myth of The Loyal Native (Tokaya) – an intelligent yet subordinate native – to neutralize racial and political conflicts. This representation, paired with the Individual Humanization of Willem, functions to shift the main conflict focus from the Colonial Hierarchy to the Universal Tragedy brought by nature (The Great Equalizer). This ideological neutralization strategy subtly justifies global empathy for the colonial protagonist's narrative and softens overall criticism of the colonial structure. The findings confirm that the Tokaya character serves as narrative 'proof' that not all colonial relationships are cruel, diverting focus from structural crimes toward human helplessness in the face of nature. Keywords: Barthesian Semiotics; The Loyal Native; The Great Equalizer; Krakatoa; Colonialism

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the interpersonal communication practices of operational division employees at PT Formosa Sejati Logistics Surabaya in maintaining good relationships with customers. This research is motivated by the high intensity of interaction between operational employees and customers in logistics service processes, including administrative activities, operational coordination, and the handling of field-related issues, which may lead to misunderstandings, conflicts, and customer dissatisfaction if not managed through effective interpersonal communication. This study employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive research design. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, direct observation, and documentation involving operational division employees and customers of PT Formosa Sejati Logistics Surabaya. The analysis is based on the concept of interpersonal communication, which includes openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality, and is further examined through the lens of the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation (FIRO) theory, which encompasses the needs for inclusion, control, and affection. The findings indicate that the interpersonal communication practices implemented by operational employees are able to create effective and constructive interactions with customers through clear and honest information delivery, the ability to understand customer problems, and professional as well as equal treatment in service provision. These communication practices are proven to fulfill customers’ interpersonal needs in terms of inclusion, control, and affection, resulting in customers feeling accepted, valued, and trusted throughout the service process. The fulfillment of these interpersonal needs contributes to the development of trust, comfort, and customer loyalty, which ultimately strengthens long-term cooperative relationships between the company and its customers. This study emphasizes that interpersonal communication functions not only as a medium for conveying technical information but also as an essential relational strategy for improving service quality and sustaining business relationships within the logistics service sector. Keywords: Interpersonal Communication; Logistics Service; Customer Relations; Interpersonal Needs.

Drug abuse is a significant issue and negatively impacts health and social life. The high number of drug cases in East Java Province demonstrates the need for comprehensive and sustainable treatment. This study examines how counselors use therapeutic communication with drug addicts at the East Java National Narcotics Agency (BNN). This study employed descriptive qualitative research, employing observation, indepth interviews, and documentation as data collection techniques. Subjects included addiction counselors and drug educators at the East Java BNN. Narrative Theory and Health, along with a fear appeals approach, were used to understand the narratives used in counseling. The results indicate that effective therapeutic communication by counselors encompasses the counseling stages of exploring feelings during pre-interaction, self-acceptance, and providing reinforcement and affirmation during the work phase. Counselors use narratives in counseling, which play a role in building awareness, strengthening selfcontrol, and changing the behavior of drug addicts during their recovery process. Therapeutic communication narratives play a crucial role in supporting the rehabilitation process of drug addicts at the East Java National Narcotics Agency (BNN). Warm interpersonal relationships, empathy, and sincerity from the counselor can be key to successful rehabilitation. The use of narratives in therapeutic communication has been shown to contribute to creating meaning, increasing awareness, and encouraging behavioral changes in drug addicts during rehabilitation. Abstract

The film Yuni (2021) directed by Kamila Andini represents the social realities of young Indonesian women living under the pressures of patriarchal culture. It addresses gender issues such as child marriage, limited access to education, control over women's bodies, and the silencing of women's voices in social spaces. This study aims to analyze the representation of gender issues in the film Yuni using the Muted Group Theory perspective. The research method employs a qualitative approach with film text analysis as primary data and literature review as secondary data. The analysis results show that Yuni depicts women as a subordinate group whose voices are often ignored and must conform to the norms and language of the dominant group. The film contributes to building public awarenessregarding gender inequality and the importance of providing space for women to voice their life choices.Beyond mere reflection, Yuni functions as a strategic intervention transforming muted groups into representational counterpublics, compelling audience critical reflection on collective complicity in patriarchy reproduction. This research contributes theoretically to MGT applications in Indonesian feminist cinema and practically to anti-child marriage advocacy and gender education equityKeywords: Gender Issues; Yuni Film; Gender Representation; Muted Group Theory

Abstract

Music videos, as products of popular culture, function not only as a form of entertainment but also as sites of meaning production that represent social relations, including gender constructions. This article examines gender representation in the music video (MV) “Oshibe to Moshibe” by JKT48, one of Indonesia’s most prominent idol groups. Employing a framing analysis approach in conjunction with Standpoint Theory and Muted Group Theory, this study highlights how women’s experiences and expressions are shaped and constrained by an idol industry that remains dominated by a male perspective. The findings indicate that although the MV presents a female-centered narrative with non-heteronormative sexual themes, its representation remains framed by masculine industry standards, resulting in women’s voices being rendered muted and incomplete. The controversies surrounding the MV reveal the challenges involved in negotiating the boundaries of gender expression within Indonesian popular culture, while simultaneously provoking broader discussions on gender fluidity and audience perception.Furthermore, the choreography and bodily gestures are c haracterized by softness and restraint, yet are imbued with strong emotional significance. The female body is represented as the primary medium for articulating inner conflict, while gender relations are naturalized through biological metaphors that position desire as something inherent and inevitable. This study also finds that visual framing and lyrical narratives tend to reproduce traditional gender constructions, in which women are positioned as bearing the moral burden within romantic relationships. Thus, the music video and its lyrics not only reflect emotional experiences but also contribute to the maintenance of dominant gender discourses, particularly those originating from the Japanese idol industry and reproduced within the Indonesian music industry. Keywords: Gender Representation, Idol Industry, JKT48, Music video, Male gaze, Standpoint Theory, Muted Group Theory, Gender Fluidity, Indonesian Pop Culture.
