Abstract

Teaching practice in real educational environment is an obligation course for student teacher of teacher training and education faculty. This course is believed to be very significant as authentic experience to create professional educator by training. However, student teacher has to follow microteaching program before teaching practice at school as a set of teaching practice preparation (Ismail, 2011) which provided by university to be qualified pre-service teacher. This study was conducted as qualitative research with a case study approach. It was commonly used to understand peoples' experiences and to express their perspectives (Creswell, 1994). Furthermore, this study used triangulation data sources, consisting of: (1) demographic questionnaire, (2) face-to-face interview, and (3) observation that consisted of video as visual data, to conduct high quality research with an excellent way (Christensen & Johnson, 2008). The first, microteaching gave knowledge about teaching technical steps. This finding was relevant with another research that microteaching provided and developed knowledge of methodological teaching skill (Sen, 2009). However, findings in this study provided very specific technical teaching skill that gained by EFL pre-service teachers during the implementation of microteaching, such as a teacher should design lesson plan before coming to class, besides on lesson plan they had to pay attention with several points like material that would be taught and then decided appropriate steps in teaching that material to student on accurate time allocation. Second, the advantages of microteaching were teaching practice which gave opportunities to smoothness pre-service teachers' teaching skill (Ismail, 2011) which been the most important point of microteaching itself. However, not only well preparation that needed by EFL pre-service teachers to be an educator, but also well teaching was also significant.

Abstract

This research aims to find out students' perceptions and the obstacles experienced by students towards the transition of English learning from online to offline after the Covid-19 pandemic in a high school in Batanghari district, Jambi province. This research is qualitative research with a case study approach. The informants in this research were eleventh grade students and English teachers who taught eleventh-grade. The research location is a school in Batanghari district, Jambi province. Data collection techniques through interview. The results of the data analysis showed that all students responded well to the transition from online to offline learning. This perception is shown to emphasize that online learning is not always effective due to the lack of supporting equipment at school. In addition, the students were not fully engaged during online learning and they could not participate as effectively as offline learning. This research shows, all students have felt bored to do online learning at home. Because what students get during online learning is only receiving materials, after that, students do the tasks given by the teacher. When offline students get a real learning atmosphere in class, and can interact directly with friends and teachers. In addition, students still need time to adapt when switching from online to offline learning. Students show the same attitude when studying online even though they have studied offline at school. In this case, the role of the teacher is needed by students at school because it helps to generate learning motivation, direct students in class during the learning process, and improve new students’ activities.

Abstract

The research utilized the qualitative descriptive phenomenological design in analyzing the narratives of the informants. A total of eight participants were selected via purposive sampling and were from each of the nine (9) Southeast Asian countries. Semi structured interview was the main tool for data gathering while results were thematically analyzed and presented. Findings showed that Filipino educators teaching a multicultural class were confronted with diverse, unique, and encompassing challenges but still majority have found their niche in their place of employment regardless of the difficulties, anxiety brought by the pandemic, or uncertainty about whether they will be rehired. Most were resolved to continue to teach for as long as opportunities present themselves to them. From the narratives of the Filipino educators, the following themes were gathered as to teaching interruptions namely difficulties handling the virtual classroom and confronting the challenges of teaching and learning during the pandemic. With regards to challenges on differentiated instructions, emphasizing the differentiated learning assessment dilemma and uncovering the challenges of differentiated learning instruction were the most dominant themes. For the challenges on instructional emphasis, the participants revealed that managing frustrations and expectations along with teaching in a difficult learning environment as their overarching experience. Furthermore, with regards to behavior in classroom to address teacher resiliency and teacher efficacy beliefs to address teacher resiliency in a multi-cultural classroom finding revealed the following themes namely a nurturing figure in the multi-cultural classroom, promoting acceptance and tolerance within the classroom, being a caring teacher in the classroom and establishing one’s place in a multi-cultural classroom. For the most part, most Filipino educators find working with multicultural students whether in their own country or overseas challenging due to the diverse cultural make-up of their students and the pandemic but at the same time fulfilling. Further development of cultural competencies should be included in the curriculum and made part of the courses to be taken in college.
