Abstract

This study examines the experiences of 32 Indonesian students enrolled in an international business program at a Thai university, focusing on their difficulties, motivation, and attitudes towards learning English. Data were collected through a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire and interviews. The research investigates factors such as language difficulties, anxiety, study habits, and the motivation to improve language skills. The results indicate that students face moderate difficulties in mastering English, but their motivation to learn the language is high. Anxiety related to speaking English is present but not overwhelming. Students’ study habits are slightly above neutral, suggesting room for improvement in learning strategies. Despite facing difficulties, students express a strong interest in improving their English proficiency. They enjoy listening to music and watching films in English. The study points to the need for tailored support to address language anxiety and study habits to help students succeed in language learning and academic work. The findings stress the importance of creating a positive and engaging learning environment that promotes linguistic and personal development.

Abstract

This Research and Development (R&D) study, conducted using the ADDIE model, focused on theAnalysis Phase to address the main learning barrier in Dance Arts in Junior High Schools (SMP):the high difficulty of Phase D students in understanding the Essence of Movement (space, time, energy) and the abstract Laban Notation symbols. Data collected from 20 students and 2 teachers inSerang City indicated an extreme level of difficulty in abstract concepts (85.5% - 87.0%), inverselyproportional to the students' strong interest (92.5%) and readiness for high-tech devices (95.0%) fordigital learning. The goal was to validate the urgency and specify the functional requirements of thesolution. The results confirmed the urgent need for instructional media capable of bridging theabstract (Laban symbols) with the kinesthetic (3D motion). These findings led to the FunctionalSpecifications of Augmented Reality (AR) Media - Motion Literacy. The AR media must specificallyvisualize the interactive and real-time relationship between Laban symbols and 3D motion elements. This AR media is expected to concretize abstract concepts, support the "Create" competency in theIndependent Curriculum, and enable meaningful and enjoyable in-depth learning for 21st-centurylearners. The study concludes with a development plan for the next Design and Development phase.

Abstract

Amidst the pressures of globalization, schools often struggle to balance the demand for globalcompetencies with the preservation of local culture. In music education, the dominance of a Westerncentric curriculum can alienate students from their own musical traditions. This paper utilizes aliterature review method to analyze how an ethnomusicological approach, grounded in localwisdom, can serve as a pedagogical alternative to strengthen students' cultural identity. Bysynthesizing various studies, we argue that local wisdom (which includes the social context, function, and philosophy of music) should be the core of learning, not just supplementary material. Theanalysis suggests that engaging students with music from their own cultural environment has thepotential to support identity formation in three aspects: personal (connecting with heritage),collective (strengthening a sense of community), and intercultural (understanding other culturesthrough the lens of one's own). We conclude that applying this approach could shift the function ofthe music classroom from a mere technical training space to one of cultural dialogue. The practicalimplication points to the need to review curriculum design and teacher training to be more orientedtowards local cultural contexts, in order to foster students who have a deep understanding of theirown roots while being open to the world.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the Ayodyapala Dance Studio as an agent of cultural evolutionin the preservation of Surakarta Dance in Depok City through the perspective of Marshall D. Sahlinsand Elman R. Service's Neoevolutionism theory. Depok City, as a buffer urban area for Jakarta, represents a meeting place between tradition and modernity that triggers the process of culturaladaptation and transformation. Using a descriptive qualitative approach and case study method, thisstudy examines the dynamics of traditional dance preservation amidst the socio-cultural developmentof urban society. The results of the study indicate that the Ayodyapala Studio not only functions as aforum for dance education and training, but also as an agent of cultural adaptation that maintainstraditional values through innovation in form, function, and performance media. This phenomenonreflects the concept of specific evolution and evolutionary potential in the Neoevolutionism theory, where cultural preservation takes place through a continuous process of adaptation without losingits original identity. Thus, the Ayodyapala Studio plays an important role in maintaining thecontinuity of the Surakarta Dance tradition while confirming its relevance amidst the current ofmodernization in big cities.
