Abstract

Healthy and clean living behaviors are an important foundation for establishing children's health and well-being from an early age. One simple yet highly influential habit is washing hands before and after eating. This habit not only helps prevent the spread of germs and diseases but also instills values of discipline and awareness of personal hygiene. Early childhood is a crucial stage of development; therefore, the practice of clean and healthy living behaviors needs to be consistently encouraged through role modeling, guidance, and education from parents and teachers. The implementation of healthy and clean living practices can support children's physical growth, cognitive development, and character formation, helping them become a healthy and intelligent generation. Therefore, educating children about healthy living habits from an early age is a strategic step toward creating a high-quality and competitive generation in the future.

Abstract

This community service program aimed to determine the profile of total cholesterol levels among older adults and to improve their knowledge regarding strategies to reduce cholesterol levels through health education. The methods included measuring total cholesterol levels using a rapid test based on the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) method and providing direct health education supported by educational media. The target participants were older adults aged 60 years and above residing in Puri Astapada Indah Housing Complex RW 10, Tambak Beras Hamlet, Tambakrejo Village, Jombang District. The results of total cholesterol examination showed variations in cholesterol levels among the 40 participants. Half of the respondents (20 individuals; 50%) had normal cholesterol levels (<200 mg/dL), while 10 respondents (25%) were classified as borderline high (200–239 mg/dL), and another 10 respondents (25%) had high cholesterol levels (?240 mg/dL). Older adults with high cholesterol levels generally had risk factors such as unhealthy dietary habits and insufficient physical activity. The pre-education knowledge questionnaire revealed that the majority of respondents (30 individuals; 75%) had poor knowledge, while 10 respondents (25%) had moderate knowledge. Following the health education intervention, participants' knowledge improved significantly, with all 40 respondents (100%) demonstrating good knowledge. This community service activity had a positive impact on improving older adults' understanding of cholesterol management and is expected to encourage behavioral changes toward a healthier lifestyle. Furthermore, the program served as an early detection effort to identify the risk of cardiovascular disease within the community.

Abstract

Stunting is one of the nutritional problems that can hinder children’s growth and development. Therefore, preventive efforts are needed through the fulfillment of balanced nutrition, one of which is by increasing fish consumption as a source of animal protein. This community service activity aimed to provide education on the importance of fish consumption through the GEMARIKAN (Fish-Eating Community Movement) Program at Kenanga Integrated Health Post (Posyandu), Rempak Village, Sabak Auh District, Siak Regency. The methods used included an initial survey, interactive counseling, an introduction to catfish nuggets as an example of a processed fish product, as well as discussions and question-and-answer sessions. The results showed that participants actively and enthusiastically participated in the educational session and gained an understanding of the benefits of fish consumption, its nutritional content, and alternative ways of processing fish that can be incorporated into family meals. The GEMARIKAN Program serves as an educational medium with the potential to increase community awareness of the importance of fish consumption as part of fulfilling balanced nutrition and supporting stunting prevention efforts.

Abstract

Financial literacy is an important competency that should be instilled from elementary school age so that children develop the ability to manage money wisely. Limited understanding of financial management means that many children have not yet developed saving habits and still tend to use their pocket money consumptively. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of a financial literacy education program through saving habits among elementary school students. The community service activity was conducted using a lecture method on the importance of saving, followed by a practical activity in which students decorated piggy banks as saving containers. Rewards were given to children whose piggy banks had the most creative decorations. The results showed that the children were highly enthusiastic and responded positively by actively listening to the explanations and competing to decorate their piggy banks creatively. This activity is expected to foster a more frugal mindset among children, encourage them to use the pocket money provided by their parents wisely, and develop a consistent habit of saving.

Abstract

Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and tuberculosis (TB) remain major challenges in public health development in Indonesia. Low public awareness of the importance of regular health check-ups, combined with limited knowledge about tuberculosis prevention, may lead to delayed disease detection and increase the risk of complications and transmission. This community service activity aimed to increase public awareness through integrated health screening and tuberculosis education. The activity was conducted in Mayangan Village, Jogoroto District, Jombang Regency, involving 36 community members as participants. Health examinations included blood pressure, blood glucose, total cholesterol, and uric acid measurements using the Point-of-Care Testing (POCT) method, followed by tuberculosis education and health consultations. The examination results showed that most participants had results within the normal range. However, some participants had blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol, and uric acid levels above the reference values, indicating the need for further evaluation at healthcare facilities. The educational session received a positive response from the community and encouraged participants to better understand the importance of early detection of non-communicable diseases and tuberculosis prevention. The integration of health screening and health education represents an effective promotive and preventive approach to increasing public awareness of efforts to maintain and improve health.

Abstract

Limited land access remains a common constraint for households in rural areas seeking to meet their daily vegetable needs, a condition also faced by residents of Pejangki Village, Batang Cenaku District, Indragiri Hulu Regency. Hydroponics offers a practical solution to this constraint, as it requires no soil, uses water efficiently, and can be applied on narrow home yards. This article discusses the implementation of a hydroponic cultivation training program, a community service (KKN) activity carried out by students of Universitas Riau in Pejangki Village in 2026 in collaboration with the non-governmental organization Widya Erti Indonesia. The program was designed as a hands-on workshop introducing the concept, benefits, and basic techniques of hydroponic farming from preparing planting media and seeding to assembling simple pipe installations and mixing nutrient solutions targeting members of the Pejangki Berseri Women Farmers Group (KWT) together with village officials, the village security officer (Babinsa), and community leaders. Data were collected through participatory observation, brief interviews, and documentation during the activity. The results indicate strong enthusiasm and active participation among attendees, particularly KWT members, and suggest that the training has the potential to support household food security, reduce daily food expenses, and open new economic opportunities through the sale of fresh, harvest-ready vegetables.

Abstract

Sungai Salak Village, Tempuling District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, is one of the largest coconut-producing areas in Riau Province, generating abundant coconut shell waste. However, this waste is generally used only as fuel or discarded, resulting in limited economic value for the local community. This community service program aimed to improve the knowledge and skills of community members in utilizing coconut shell waste by converting it into activated charcoal as the primary material for producing Air Fresh Bags, an environmentally friendly and value-added natural odor absorber. The implementation methods included field observation, socialization, product demonstrations, hands-on training, and interactive discussions. The production process consisted of raw material preparation, carbonization of coconut shells, grinding, sieving, physical activation at 110–120°C for 30–40 minutes, cooling in a sealed aluminum container, and packaging the activated charcoal into cotton fabric bags. The program involved 25 participants out of 30 invited community members and successfully produced 10 Air Fresh Bag products as the training output. The results demonstrated that participants improved their knowledge and practical skills in processing coconut shell waste into an innovative product capable of absorbing odors in enclosed spaces, such as wardrobes, shoe racks, drawers, and vehicle interiors. In addition to increasing the economic value of organic waste, this program contributed to community empowerment, the development of local resource-based microenterprises, and environmental sustainability through the effective utilization of coconut shell waste.
