Abstract

Background: In Indonesia itself, it is estimated that red chilies were brought by traders from Persia when they stopped in Aceh, including large red chilies, cayenne peppers, curly red chilies, and paprika. Factors that influence chili cultivation are less fertile soil conditions due to continuous use, this causes a decrease in soil quality which will affect the growth and production of chili plants and have an impact on reducing the growth and yield of chili production both in terms of quantity and quality, in addition to the use of quality seeds and superior varieties determine the increase in chili productivity. Methods: This research was conducted out from May 2022 to September 2022 in the experimental farm of the Faculty of Agriculture, Padjadjaran University, Jatinangor, Sumedang. With an altitude of about 700 meters above sea level (masl). The purpose of this research is to study the effect of volume combination and technique of nutrient solution administration on growth and yield of large red chilies (Capsicum annum L.) variety Baja F1. Providing nutrient solutions on time is intended to be according to the age of the plant, the right volume is intended to provide nutrient solutions with a certain volume that suits the needs of each plant, while right on target is intended to provide nutrient solutions in the root area or sprayed on the leaves, either fertilizing directly to the land or plant roots or spraying directly on the leaves (foliar feeding). The environmental design uses a simple pattern randomized block design (RAK) volume combination and technique of nutrient solution, with 6 experimental levels (A=volume 225 ml onto the field and without spraying onto the leaves, B=volume 300 ml onto the field and without spraying onto the leaves, C=volume 375 ml onto the field and without spraying onto the leaves, D=volume 200 ml onto the field and spraying onto the leaves, E=volume 300 ml onto the field and spraying onto the leaves and F=volume 375 ml onto the field and spraying onto the leaves), and repeated 4 times. Findings: The application of different combinations of nutrient solution volume and administration techniques significantly affected several growth parameters (such as plant height at 3 WAP, number of leaves at 1, 2, 4, and 5 WAP, and stem diameter at 4 and 5 WAP) as well as yield parameters (including number of chilies and total fruit weight). Conclusion: Among the treatments, the combination of applying 225 ml nutrient solution directly to the field along with foliar spraying produced the most optimal results in terms of both growth and yield of Baja F1 chili plants. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides novel insights into the integrated approach of combining precise nutrient volume and foliar feeding techniques, specifically identifying the synergistic effect of 225 ml root application and foliar spraying in enhancing growth and yield, which has not been thoroughly explored in previous chili cultivation studies.

Abstract

Background: This study aims to analyze the feasibility of honeybee cultivation attractions as an object for developing educational ecotourism and to formulate strategies for developing the “Honey Picking” educational tourism package Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H. Djuanda, Bandung. Methods: This research employed a descriptive method with a qualitative approach. Primary data were obtained through observation, in-depth interviews, and questionnaires distributed to visitors using purposive sampling, while secondary data were gathered from literature reviews and relevant supporting documents. Data analysis was carried out using the SWOT method to identify internal and external factors influencing the development of the tourism package. Findings: The results show that the honey-picking educational ecotourism program has strong internal strengths and favorable external conditions, with IFAS and EFAS scores of 3.03 and 2.89, placing it in Quadrant I. Interactive educational activities, natural attractions, accessibility, and community support drive growth, while improvements in digital promotion, management capacity, and safety standards are required to ensure sustainable development. Conclusion: The study concludes that the “Honey Picking” educational ecotourism package holds strong potential to be developed as a sustainable conservation-based educational tourism model. This activity not only increases visitors’ knowledge and environmental awareness but also provides economic and social benefits for local communities and supports biodiversity conservation efforts in the Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H. Djuanda Grand Forest Park area, Bandung. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in its development of an interactive “Honey Picking” edu-ecotourism concept based on honeybee cultivation, which has not previously been explored in the context of Taman Hutan Raya Ir. H. Djuanda. Additionally, the study offers a strategic, data-driven framework using SWOT analysis to guide the creation of sustainable conservation-based educational tourism packages.

Abstract

Background: Proper household waste management is essential to maintain environmental quality, especially in densely populated areas such as student boarding houses. University students, as part of the educated population, play a crucial role in promoting sustainable waste practices. However, the gap between environmental awareness and actual waste management behavior among students remains a significant challenge. Methods: This study employed a descriptive quantitative survey approach to analyze the awareness and attitudes of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) students living in boarding houses toward household waste management. Data were collected through a self-administered online questionnaire distributed to 53 respondents and analyzed using descriptive statistical methods. Findings: The results revealed that most respondents demonstrated high awareness of environmental and household waste issues, with more than 80% agreeing or strongly agreeing that waste sorting and recycling are essential. Nevertheless, their active participation in implementing waste management practices was still limited, mainly due to lack of facilities and motivation. Conclusion: The findings indicate that while awareness and attitudes are generally positive, the translation of this awareness into consistent waste management behavior remains inadequate. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides a focused analysis of environmental awareness and attitudes within the context of student boarding life, offering insight into behavioral gaps that can inform targeted environmental education and campus sustainability programs. However, this study is limited by its relatively small sample size and descriptive focus, which may affect the generalization of the findings. Despite this, the results provide practical implications for developing targeted environmental programs and waste management initiatives within university student communities.

Abstract

Background: Local wisdom remains a vital foundation for social harmony and moral formation in plural societies, yet its relevance is increasingly challenged by globalization and cultural shifts among youth. One of the most prominent local philosophies of the To Kaili community in Palu City is Nosarara Nosabatutu, which emphasizes unity, brotherhood, togetherness, and collective responsibility. Previous studies have largely positioned this philosophy as a cultural identity or conflict-resolution mechanism, while its role in youth character education has not been sufficiently examined. This study aims to analyze the meaning of Nosarara Nosabatutu in a plural social context, identify challenges in preserving its values, and examine its role in shaping youth character. Methods: This research employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with four key informants consisting of cultural figures, historians, educators, and academics, supported by document analysis and interpretative thematic analysis. Findings: The findings show that Nosarara Nosabatutu functions as a living social philosophy that strengthens solidarity and social cohesion, yet its transmission is hindered by weakening intergenerational communication, diverse linguistic interpretations, limited institutional reinforcement, and cultural transformation driven by modernization. The study further reveals that the values embedded in this philosophy are closely aligned with character education goals, particularly in fostering empathy, cooperation, social responsibility, and peaceful interaction among youth. These results demonstrate a strong correspondence between local wisdom theory and character formation practices within educational and social settings. Conclusion: In conclusion, Nosarara Nosabatutu has a strategic role in youth character education when integrated across family, school, and community environments. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in positioning Nosarara Nosabatutu not merely as a cultural symbol, but as a context-based character education framework that is adaptable to contemporary plural societies.

Abstract

Background: The Mangupa-Upa tradition is part of the traditional ceremonies of the Batak Mandailing people, rich in cultural values, spirituality, and ecological symbolism. Amid global challenges such as environmental degradation and the crisis of cultural identity, an educational approach that integrates local knowledge is becoming increasingly relevant. This study aims to reconstruct elements of the Mangupa-Upa tradition into contextual biology learning resources that align with the direction of the Independent Curriculum and the principles of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD). Methods: The method used is a systematic literature review of various primary sources, including journal articles, scientific books, policy documents, and local cultural texts. The analysis was conducted thematically with a descriptive qualitative approach. Findings: The results of the study indicate that pangupa materials, such as betel, fish from seven rivers, old goats, and banana leaves, have symbolic meanings that can be reconstructed into scientific concepts in biology, such as biodiversity, the digestive system, the excretory system, plant and animal morphology, and the locomotion system. This integration of local knowledge supports the ethnopedagogical and ESD approaches, by instilling cultural values, environmental conservation, and strengthening local identity in the learning process. Furthermore, the reconstruction results indicate that a single local tradition can generate various biology learning topics relevant to the learning outcomes of phases E and F in the Independent Curriculum. Conclusion: The implications of this research suggest that transforming scientific knowledge into local forms such as Mangupa-Upa can be an effective pedagogical strategy to bridge the epistemological gap in formal education. This tradition serves not only as a cultural heritage but also as a transformative learning medium that strengthens students' scientific understanding in a contextual, participatory, and sustainable manner. Novelty/Originality of this article: The novelty of this study lies in reconstructing the Mangupa-Upa tradition into contextual biology learning resources aligned with the Independent Curriculum and ESD, demonstrating how a single local tradition generates multiple scientific learning themes.

Abstract

Background: The widespread waste phenomenon in Indonesia has caused other environmental damage, such as contaminated clean water sourcer, flooding that damages buildings and infrastructure, and even claims lives. This is due to a lack of public awareness of the environment and suboptimal waste management. The aims of this research is to provide education and understanding of environmental care character in children by introducing zero waste management. Methods: The qualitative research used a case study method at ABA Kindegarten Ambarawa. The subjects were the 1 class teacher and 15 students in class A. data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Data analysis was carried out through data reduction, presesntation, and verification. Findings: Educators can develop a caring character for the environment by introducing zero waste management to early childhood. Educational activities have been implemented to instill a caring character for the environment, including introducing young children to various types of waste, instilling the habit of disposing of waste properly, introducing and teaching the management of organic waste into compost, and utilizing recycled plastic waste as a learning medium and creative work for young children. These activities are expectied to instill and foster a habit of caring for the environment. By becoming accustomed to healthy and clean living from a young age, childreen will maintain a healthy environment. Conclusion: Environmentally conscious behavior can begin with the instilling of healthy lifestyle habits in young children. Introducing waste management through recycling and composting. Novelty/Originality of this article: The research discusses three things in waste management, namely habituation, recycling and composting. Few studies discuss these three thing in one article.

Abstract

Background: Soil and microclimatic conditions play important roles in regulating ecosystem processes in tropical forest environments. However, information regarding these environmental characteristics in Tahura Ir. H. Djuanda based on smart sensor measurements remains limited. This study aimed to characterize soil and microclimatic conditions in the conservation area using a smart sensing approach. Methods: A quantitative descriptive field study was conducted in April 2026 at three observation points in Tahura Ir. H. Djuanda, West Java, Indonesia. Environmental parameters were measured using a 6-in-1 Intelligent Soil Tester (Model ST03). The observed variables included soil moisture, soil fertility, soil pH, soil temperature, light intensity, and air humidity. Data were analyzed descriptively through comparison and interpretation of measurements across observation points. Findings: Soil moisture remained consistently high (99%) at all observation points. Soil fertility ranged from 209 to 582 μS/cm, while soil pH varied between 6.5 and 7.0, indicating slightly acidic to neutral conditions. Soil temperature increased from 21.6°C to 26.0°C, light intensity ranged from 628 to 1,304 lux, and air humidity varied from 78% to 84%. These results indicate spatial variability in environmental parameters while maintaining conditions typical of tropical forest ecosystems. Conclusion: Tahura Ir. H. Djuanda exhibits favorable soil and microclimatic conditions characterized by high soil moisture, relatively fertile soils, near-neutral pH, warm soil temperatures, low understory light intensity, and high atmospheric humidity. These conditions support ecological processes and vegetation growth within the conservation area. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides baseline information on soil and microclimatic conditions in Tahura Ir. H. Djuanda using a smart sensor-based approach that supports future environmental monitoring and conservation management.

Abstract

Background: Urban waste management has become a strategic challenge in Indonesia due to increasing waste generation and limited final processing capacity. In Bogor City, 32 Community-Based Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Waste Processing Facilities (TPS 3R) are only capable of processing approximately 22.5 tons of waste per day, equivalent to about 3% of the city’s total waste generation, highlighting a gap between policy targets and local implementation. This study aims to identify variations in TPS 3R performance, analyze factors influencing the sustainability of community-based waste management, and formulate a more integrated and sustainable development model for TPS 3R in the City of Bogor. Methods: The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a comparative case study design across 15 TPS 3R units selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through field observations, in-depth interviews, and analysis of operational documents and policies. Analysis was conducted using a weighted scoring system and thematic analysis, then integrated through a convergent mixed-methods approach. Findings: The results indicate variations in performance among 15 TPS 3R units. Units in the high-performance category demonstrated better operational capacity, community participation, and financial sustainability compared to those in the low-performance category. In general, the contribution of TPS 3R to urban waste reduction remains limited, and most units are still in the early stages of resource recovery. Key factors influencing sustainability include institutional capacity, community participation, governance, and circular economy mechanisms. Conclusion: The sustainability of TPS 3R is determined not only by technical waste processing capacity but also by the interaction between social, institutional, and economic factors. The development of TPS 3R needs to be directed toward strengthening community governance, community participation, and circular economy models based on material recovery. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study offers an integrative approach to the analysis of TPS 3R by combining technical, social, institutional, and circular economic dimensions within a single comparative analytical framework based on empirical learning from 15 TPS 3R units in the City of Bogor.

Abstract

Background: The degradation of river ecosystem quality in Indonesia remains a complex environmental issue caused by domestic waste, urbanization, industrial activities, and ineffective community-based waste management. Technical approaches alone have not been fully effective without behavioral changes supported by environmental education and community participation. This study aims to analyze community participation in river cleanliness education, identify supporting and inhibiting factors, and evaluate the role of environmental education in sustaining river ecosystems in Indonesia. Methods: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method using the PRISMA 2020 approach. Literature was collected from Google Scholar and ScienceDirect using the keywords “public participation,” “environmental education,” “river ecosystem,” and “Indonesia.” From 305 identified articles, 15 articles published between 2015 and 2025 met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using descriptive and thematic analysis approaches. Findings: The results indicate that community participation remains predominantly focused on operational activities, such as river clean-up programs, waste management, and environmental campaigns, while involvement in planning and decision-making remains limited. Participatory environmental education through Participatory Action Research (PAR), citizen science, and community collaboration contributes to increasing ecological awareness, behavioral change, and collective action. Supporting factors include contextual education, local leadership, institutional support, and experiential learning, while barriers include limited information access, insufficient community capacity, weak institutional support, and top-down governance approaches. Conclusion: River ecosystem sustainability is strongly influenced by the quality of community participation and the effectiveness of environmental education programs. Collaborative and participatory education can encourage sustainable environmental practices and strengthen community-based river management. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study provides an integrative socio-ecological synthesis of the relationship between environmental education, community participation, and river ecosystem sustainability. It also develops an evidence-based conceptual framework for participatory river management policies in Indonesia.

Abstract

Background: Indonesia's coastal communities face increasing environmental pressures from climate change and ineffective waste management, threatening ecosystem sustainability and community resilience. Although community-based waste segregation has been widely promoted, existing studies provide limited understanding of its governance dimensions and contribution to coastal resilience. Therefore, this study systematically reviews the literature to identify governance patterns and research gaps related to community-based waste segregation for coastal resilience. Methods: This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) using a qualitative synthesis approach. Data were sourced from peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar via SciSpace, and other additional source. Six eligible studies were selected and comparatively analyzed to examine governance patterns supporting community-based waste segregation and coastal resilience. Findings: Six eligible studies were reviewed. The findings indicate that community-based waste segregation is more effective when supported by polycentric governance involving communities, governments, and other stakeholders. Adaptive governance was reflected in collaborative decision-making, institutional flexibility, and cross-scale coordination, whereas limited institutional support reduced the long-term sustainability of waste management initiatives. Conclusion: Community-based waste segregation contributes to the socio-ecological resilience of coastal areas by strengthening sustainable collaborative governance. Its effectiveness depends on institutional support, cross-scale coordination, and inclusive environmental policies. Strengthening polycentric governance is therefore essential for the sustainability of community-based waste segregation. Novelty/Originality of this article: This study synthesizes existing evidence to explain how polycentric governance and institutional arrangements shape the contribution of community-based waste segregation to coastal resilience, providing an integrated governance perspective that has received limited attention in previous studies.
