Abstract

In recent years, the “Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education” (hereinafter referred to as “Grading Standards”) have attracted worldwide attention for improving the quality of Chinese teaching. However, local Chinese teacher training in Indonesia rarely discusses the role of “Grading Standards”. Many local professional Chinese teachers in universities do not understand how to combine “Grading Standards” with “Chinese + Vocational Skills” courses. This article explains the “Grading Standards” and the methods and directions of local Chinese teacher training in Indonesia. First, we will introduce the requirements and types of “Chinese + Vocational Skills” courses for Chinese language majors in vocational colleges in Indonesia. Secondly, it proposes training content for local Chinese teachers in Indonesia. The final article provides the “Grading Standards” and Indonesian local Chinese teacher training methods based on constructivist theory. The author hopes that it will be helpful to promote the sustainable development of Chinese teacher training in Indonesia and achieve the goals of Chinese teaching.

Abstract

The research title of this article is “An Analysis of Students' Understanding of Chinese Numerical Idioms at the Common Hope Language Institute”. This article explores the comprehension and usage of Chinese numerical idioms among students at the Common Hope Language Institute, aiming to identify challenges and propose effective teaching strategies. Surveys and tests were used to assess students’ understanding and application of these idioms. Results indicate that while students show interest in numerical idioms, their comprehension is limited, with many struggling to grasp meanings and usage. Self-directed learning was found to play a critical role in enhancing idiom mastery, while general Chinese proficiency did not significantly influence performance. The study emphasizes the importance of incorporating idiom-focused teaching strategies, such as contextual exercises and activities encouraging independent learning, to address gaps in comprehension and practical usage. This research provides insights into the learning process of Chinese numerical idioms and offers actionable recommendations for improving teaching methods to support student success.

Abstract

From the intergenerational wealth transfer perspective, this study explores motivations and practical significance of women’s land rights protection in Nanning’s (Guangxi, China) urban villages. Empirical research on Xingxing and Guanguan Villages shows traditional gender norms and institutional exclusion in village rules restrict married women’s land inheritance rights. Besides, "sonless families" see gender-discriminatory policy implementation, and migrant brides/sons-in-law face unequal rights allocation. The study reveals land rights are not just economic assets but core for intergenerational wealth transmission. Women use legal litigation, identity strategies and public advocacy to defend rights, essentially challenging the patriarchal structure. It also finds depriving women of land rights worsens poverty intergenerational transmission ("mothers’ poverty weakens sons’ prospects"). Based on relevant theories, it proposes revising the Law of the People’s Republic of China on Rural Collective Economic Organizations, setting up village rule review mechanisms and promoting gender equality awareness, to support a fair land rights protection system amid urban-rural integration.

Abstract

Against the background of current Chinese language teaching in Singapore primary schools, this study adopts chunk theory as its theoretical framework to examine the effectiveness of chunk-based instruction in improving students’ oral proficiency. A total of 103 students with comparable Chinese language proficiency from five Primary 4 to Primary 6 classes participated in the study. A cross-school teacher team conducted a semester-long teaching intervention. Data was collected through audio and video recordings, classroom observations, and student assignments. The study identified practical procedures for chunk extraction and instruction and provided preliminary evidence that such intervention enhances students’ chunk awareness, as well as their oral fluency and accuracy. The findings indicate that integrating chunk theory into the existing curriculum, supported by digital teaching methods and diversified interventions, can significantly stimulate primary school students’ motivation for oral input and output, and improve the retention and productive use of chunks. This approach is particularly beneficial for improving the oral performance of L2 learners with relatively low levels of Chinese proficiency.

Abstract

In response to the actual needs of Indonesian students in learning Chinese,Sekolah Tinggi Bahasa Harapan Bersama in Pontianak and the College of Chinese Language and Culture of Jinan University have cooperated to open an efficient teaching model of "listening, speaking + reading and writing", in order to quickly improve students' Chinese use ability in a short period of time. This study intends to compare the efficient model with the traditional Indonesian undergraduate teaching model from the aspects of curriculum setting, teaching content, teaching methods and teaching strategies, so as to better meet the needs of different learners. In terms of curriculum setting, the efficient mode adopts the concept of "small steps and fast walking", and the course type is streamlined into two categories: "listening and speaking" and "reading and writing". In terms of teaching content, the study aims to analyze the differences in the content learned by comparing the number of new words taught in one semester and the difficulty level of the two modes. In terms of teaching methods and strategies, the teaching model of "listening, speaking + reading and writing" proposes teaching strategies including "language 'use' for middle school", 'increasing input' and 'running in small steps'". On the basis of teaching practice, this paper evaluates the practical effect of the effective teaching mode of "listening, speaking + reading and writing" for Indonesian students from the aspects of Chinese proficiency test scores, daily homework and activity performance, and then reflects on and improves the teaching practice.

Abstract

Over the last two decades, in many of the countries in Southeast Asia, there has been an exponential growth among their populace an interest in learning Mandarin, the standard form of the modern Chinese language. The reason is mainly due to a deepening of economic ties between China and the 10-nation bloc of political and economic union called ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations). Although the various Southeast Asian states each has their own national language, they have adopted English, a non-native language of the region, as the working language of ASEAN. As a matter of fact, English is an inter-national lingua franca in Southeast Asia. This, of course, is a result of the global political and economic developments that have taken place over the several decades after the Second World War. In view of the recent economic and technological rise of China on a global scale, and the strengthening of economic relations between China and ASEAN, will the Chinese language become another language of wide communication in Southeast Asia? This paper aims to answer the question by first taking a look at the spread of English in Southeast Asia, and through which understand the prospects and challenges of making Chinese a language of wider communication in ASEAN.

Abstract

This study found that the selection of “Xiaolaoshi” not only focuses on language proficiency but also emphasizes personal character, sense of responsibility, and teaching motivation. During the training process, schools use methods such as HSK examinations, class observations, and trial teaching to train or hone the teaching skills. The teaching ability of the “Xiaolaoshi” is evaluated through students’ academic performance, promotion rates, and feedback from students. In addition, challenges such as lack of experience, the dual pressure of studying and teaching, and salary issues are commonly faced by these “Xiaolaoshi”. In summary, the “Xiaolaoshi” training system in Singkawang provides valuable practical experience for promoting the development of Chinese language education.

Abstract

With the opening and development of Chinese language education in Indone-sia, the number of people learning Chinese in Indonesia has also increased significantly. That way the demand for Chinese teachers in Indonesia is in-creasing slowly . In 2004, Hanban launched the "Chinese Teacher Volunteer" project in which thousands teachers are sent to various countries around the world every year to teach Chinese and spread Chinese culture. Most of the volunteer Chinese teachers have been working and living abroad for a long time, and in this long-term foreign cultural atmosphere, they have more contact with the locals, not only from theoretical understanding, but also from practical life, they will continue to face difficulties, especially in terms of cultural ad-aptation, they will experience a kind of culture shock, which will be reflected in these Chinese teachers. The authors randomly selected a Chinese teacher teaching mandarin in Indonesia to conduct an interview survey to investigate how they reflect differently in cross-cultural communication under the collision of different cultures in China and Indonesia. After consolidating interviewees, the authors found that the explicit culture of interviewees in foreign countries includes: language, food, etiquette, systems, and clothing; Implicit ones in-clude: religion, the concept of time, etc. It is hoped that this survey can provide assistance, references and advice to teachers who will volunteer as Chinese teachers in Indonesia in the future, making it more convenient for teachers to work, study, and live in Indonesia.
