Sinolingua: Journal of Chinese Studies is a scientific periodical published by the Department of Chinese Language and Culture, at Universitas Sebelas Maret which focuses on the development of Chinese studies. The scope of the publication is in the latest studies and research in the fields of language, literature, culture, philology and history. Journal articles are the result of studies and research originating from literature studies, field research, and best practice of literation of the Chinese language and culture. Each article contains the latest information by prioritizing the values of novelty, originality and usefulness. The purpose of publishing is to actively improve the quality and accessibility of scientific knowledge in the fields of Chinese studies. The article will be reviewed by internal and external editors, with at least two reviewers who have related expertise with double-blind peer review. Along with the development of technological systems in the field of literacy, on March 22 2023, the Sinolingua Journal used the Online Journal System (OJS) with E-ISSN numbers: 2986-1969 and P-ISSN: 2986-9773. Sinolingua journal is published twice a year, in March and September. Every article published by Sinolingua Journal has gone through a strict review and editorial process and respects the provisions of copyright law, privacy and scientific publication ethics. The informational content of this journal is open access under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC 4.0).

Abstract

In this study, Chinese songs containing sadness metaphors were used as experimental materials to investigate the relationship between the level of bilingualism and the perception of Chinese sadness metaphors. Native Chinese speakers perceived sadness more highly in songs with lyrics, but Chinese bilinguals' perception of sadness was not affected by the presence or absence of lyrics. Highly proficient Chinese bilinguals perceived the Chinese sadness metaphor to a relatively higher degree. This study suggests that in Chinese language teaching, especially cultural teaching, teachers can use the sadness inducing effect of sad tunes on listeners to assist students from different cultural backgrounds to understand and remember and use relevant expressions with sadness emotion metaphors in Chinese.

Abstract

Translanguaging is one of the foci in international linguistics studies. Recently, there is a heat in learning Chinese with the increasing influence of Chinese language in the international area. The present paper synthesized the developmental trajectory, hotspots and future trend of research on translanguaging in international Chinese education based on SSCI-indexed journal articles sourced from Springer, Cambridge, Oxford and Web of Science. It has been found that 1) there is an incremental trend in translanguaging research in international Chinese language education which falls into three stages; 2) there is no close tie of cooperation among researchers and institutions in terms of space distribution with Macao Polytechnic University, Dublin City University, and University of Copenhagen as the institutions that have the most publication number in this field; 3) a multiple hotspots were identified as follows: the application of translanguaging in international Chinese language education, translanguaging pedagogy and diasporic community, Chinese language teaching and global textbooks, cultural comprehension and language policy, and others; 4) the developing trajectory of translanguaging research in international Chinese language education falls into the exploratory period, slow development period, quickening development period, and rapid development period; 5) the emerging keywords like bilingual education, diasporic community, language choice reflected the changes of attention to translanguaging research in international Chinese language education. These changes might exert far-reaching influence on language education, policy, society and culture.

Abstract

Ai Qing (1910–1996) is one of China’s most celebrated poets, renowned for his deceptively simple yet deeply philosophical verses that resonate with everyday life. His poetic career was interrupted for over two decades due to China’s turbulent political and social upheavals, culminating in his return to literary prominence in 1978. This period marked a stylistic evolution, as scholars have noted, wherein his works increasingly employed symbolism—such as Umbrella, Hope, Mirror, and Fish Fossil—to convey existential reflections.‌ The study concludes that the four Ai Qing poems selected as the corpus employ figurative language—primarily ‌personification‌ and ‌symbolization‌ of everyday objects—to convey profound philosophical messages. These works advocate for: Altruism‌ (being beneficial to others), Resilience‌ (remaining hopeful in adversity), Truth-seeking‌ (expressing reality unflinchingly), and Self-discovery‌ (continuously exploring one’s potential). This aligns with Ai Qing’s 1978 poetic resurgence, where his style evolved to blend simplicity with existential depth, using objects like Mirrors and Fish Fossils as metaphors.

Abstract

The reform of the Chinese Proficiency Test under the New HSK 3.0 framework marks a significant shift in the assessment of Chinese as a Foreign Language (CFL). While previous studies primarily examine vocabulary expansion or standard alignment, the design principles underlying the reform remain underexplored. This study investigates the conceptual logic of the New HSK 3.0 examination system and its implications for CFL education. Using qualitative document analysis and multi-source literature review, the research analyzes key policy documents, including the Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education (CEFCIL) and the HSK Examination Syllabus (2025). The findings identify three core design principles: multidimensional competence construction, communicative authenticity, and receptive-productive differentiation in character learning. These principles are reflected in the expansion to a nine-level proficiency framework and the redistribution of vocabulary and character requirements across learning stages. The study provides insights into Chinese language assessment reform and its implications for curriculum design and language teaching in international Chinese education.

Abstract

The title of this study is “Overview of Traditional Customs of Chinese Winter Solstice Festival in Sambas City”. The winter solstice is a very important solar term in the lunar calendar, it is the 22nd of the 24 solar terms. The winter solstice is also a traditional festival. The Winter Solstice is generally celebrated on December 21st or 22nd of the lunar calendar. The winter solstice was once called “eating glunious rice balls” by Chinese Indonesians. The purpose of the research is to understand the customs and significance of the Sambas city Winter Solstice Festival and the differences between Sambas and Chinese Winter Solstice Festivals. The author chooses Sambas Chinese as the research object. The data collection method used in this article is interviews. It can be seen from the interview results that the Sambas Chinese still celebrate the Winter Solstice Festival, but many people do not understand the meaning, significance and customs of the Winter Solstice Festival. With the development of the times, many traditional customs have gradually changed, and some customs have even slowy disappeared.

Abstract

Since the launch of the “Belt and Road” Initiative, the integration of Chinese language and vocational education has become increasingly important in promoting cross-cultural communication and international industrial cooperation. To comprehensively identify research hotspots and trace the evolution of this field, this study analyzes 319 relevant articles from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) using CiteSpace 6.4.R1 for visualized bibliometric analysis. It examines dimensions including annual publication trends, core cluster groups, and burst keywords to map the developmental trajectory and research focus of “Chinese + Vocational Education.” The findings reveal four distinct stages of development: emergence, slow growth, rapid expansion, and peak adjustment. These stages are accompanied by a thematic shift from policy advocacy and conceptual exploration to textbook development, teacher training, cross-border collaboration, and digital resource construction. Cluster analysis shows that current hotspots center on the integration of vocational Chinese teaching and technology, internationalization of teaching models, regional cooperation practices, and the construction of teaching resources, while burst keyword analysis highlights emerging interests in artificial intelligence, instructional design, and cross-cultural adaptation. Despite growing attention, most studies remain case-oriented, with limited cross-regional comparison and long-term empirical evaluation. Future studies should reinforce comparative and evidence-based approaches, broaden interdisciplinary perspectives, and establish evaluative frameworks with broader applicability. The study concludes by proposing future directions for talent cultivation, emphasizing that the Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) approach offers a viable pathway to developing interdisciplinary, cross-domain professionals.

Abstract

From a syntactic perspective, both Chinese and Khmer are typical subject-verb-object (SVO) languages, and thus their linguistic features often exhibit a degree of symmetry. However, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the usage of "eat" and "drink" in Chinese and Khmer, revealing that despite their shared SVO structure, there are notable differences in verb-object constructions. In Chinese, the verb "eat" (chī) tends to select objects based on the physical form of food and has a broad range of applications, whereas in Khmer, "eat" (nham) encompasses the consumption of all types of food without emphasizing physical form, and its "drink" (phīrk) is strictly limited to beverages. Additionally, the expression of "eat" in Khmer varies depending on the listener’s seniority or social status, reflecting the language’s politeness culture. Nevertheless, the semantic scope of "eat" and "drink" in Khmer remains confined to food-related contexts, exhibiting less flexibility compared to Chinese. These differences often lead to errors among learners, particularly in mastering verb-object collocations. To address this, targeted teaching strategies—such as comparative explanations and contextual practice—should be employed to help students understand the distinctions and similarities in the usage of "eat" and "drink" between the two languages, thereby improving learning outcomes and providing practical support for cross-linguistic comparative studies.

Abstract

The preposition word "给" is a hypothetical word widely used in modern Chinese. In Chinese grammar, the preposition word "给" has many meanings and the functions of using this word vary. Preposition words Indonesian, such as "for", "to", and "by" are similar to the preposition word "给" in modern Chinese. In this paper, we will analyze the Chinese preposition word "给" and the Indonesian preposition word "for", "to", and "by" to find out each of the functions of the word, so that we can also know the similarities and differences between them. And this can cause, Indonesian students who are learning Mandarin are confused and use it incorrectly. Indonesian students have been using their mother tongue since childhood before they learned Mandarin as their second language, so their mother tongue will definitely have an impact on learning Mandarin as the target language.  For example, the order of words in sentences between the two is different, so Indonesian students in the process of learning the preposition word "给", they use it incorrectly. Therefore, for Chinese teachers, we should think about the following points in our teaching: First, as qualified Chinese teachers, we must first understand the difference between Chinese grammar system and Indonesian, so as to remind students to avoid bias at any time in teaching. Secondly, as a teacher, you must be clear about the difficulties and key points in teaching, and repeatedly explain these two points to strengthen students' impressions of these key points and the difficulties to avoid bias in the future. Of course, we must also choose comprehensive textbooks, and for the shortcomings in textbooks, teachers must try their best to make up for these shortcomings.

Abstract

When Mao Zhenxuan, a Chinese poet in the Qing Dynasty, served in Guizhou, he left two volumes of the poetry collection of The Miao Jiang Collection. The study, using literature research and text analysis methods, aims to explore the content and historical value of the Miao Jiang Collection. The paper discusses Mao Zhenxuan's poetry creation during his tenure in Guizhou. This study focuses on the analysis of the creation theme, artistic characteristics and aesthetic paradigm of Miao Jiang Collection, and finally summarizes its historical value. The study shows that the poems of Miao Jiang Collection not only vividly depict the natural and precipitous and folk customs of Miao Jiang, but also recorded the military conflicts and cultural interactions in the border governance of the Qing Dynasty.Moreover, the spirit of self-annotation and factual recording in the poem enhances its value as a historical document. This study holds that Mao Zhenxuan's Miao Jiang Collection is not only a model of literary creation, but also an important historical material for the study of frontier policy and ethnic relations in the Qing Dynasty.

Abstract

Comprehensive Chinese is a core course in the Chinese language education majoring program, accounting for 40% of the total credit load in a single semester. Among the four main components of language, vocabulary plays a fundamental role as both a building block of language and a gateway to learning Mandarin.This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing data collection methods such as classroom observation, interviews with instructors, and student questionnaires. The aim is to evaluate the vocabulary teaching methods used in the second-semester Comprehensive Chinese course within the Mandarin Language Education Program at the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Tanjungpura University. This research is significant in providing deeper insight into the effectiveness of chinese vocabulary instruction and contributing to the development of innovative teaching approaches. The findings indicate that students responded positively to the vocabulary teaching methods and media used, particularly the use of images and slides. It can therefore be concluded that the integration of diverse teaching methods, including more active interaction and in-depth explanations, can enhance students’ vocabulary comprehension in Chinese language learning.
