Abstract

This research discussed the values of the main character in the Chinese movie "The Red Cliff" by John Woo. The goal of this research is to describe the main character's patriotism values as well as the impact that character's patriotism values have on the film. This research is based on Budiyono's patriotism theory. The theoretical basis used is the sociology of literary theory. This research used a descriptive qualitative method and also used listening and note-taking techniques for the data collection. This research also used Miles and Huberman's data analysis method. Based on the analysis of the Red Cliff film, it was found that some data was depicted through the two main characters. Zhūgé Liàng (诸葛亮), the main character, was awarded five data points: self-sacrifice value, courage value, unyielding value, united value, and loyalty value. Zhōu Yú (周瑜), the other main character, received four data points, which were divided into courage value, loyalty value, unyielding value, and unifying value. Thus, John Woo's Red Cliff film proved that the values of patriotism were illustrated by the two main characters.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to prove that modification of the interjection ‘Aiya’ [哎呀] at certain intonation signals a different attitude. As a result, this study focuses on the different emotional expressions that the Chinese word aiya might convey. Re-searchers employed recording methods with the PRAAT application. Furthermore, the researcher presented 40 respondents who were Mandarin students to give a direct as-sessment of the original and the manipulated interjection. The perception test is carried out by playing five interjection utterances without telling the respondent which sound is the initial utterance. The first sentence has the results of happy emotional attitudes. When it is raised and lowered to 4 semitones, there is a balanced variation of emotions. However, when it was raised to 8 semitones, the test results show an emotional attitude of disappointment, and when lowered to 8 semitones, showed an emotional attitude of impressed. An increase of one tone point can create a positive impression. Then, if there is a decrease, it will make a negative impression. However, because of the vast variation in everyone's perception, generating these conclusions is still impossible. This is where the suggestion appears for future researchers to continue this research and make this research a reference.

Abstract

Dictation is one of the techniques used to assess the success of learners in Chinese language education. Through dictation, educators can simultaneously evaluate listening and writing abilities. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of dictation in improving Mandarin listening and writing skills. This research employed a classroom action research design, using observation, interviews, and self-assessment techniques for data collection, which were analyzed using descriptive qualitative methods. The study was conducted over one semester and involved 39 first-year students from Class D of the evening program at Harapan Bersama Language College. The findings indicate that students initially faced challenges such as limited vocabulary, weak listening comprehension, and poor character writing accuracy. However, after the implementation of structured dictation activities, students showed significant improvement. Quantitative results revealed that 89.7% of students achieved scores above 80, indicating a substantial enhancement in their performance. Therefore, dictation is proven to be highly effective in improving Chinese listening and writing skills.

Abstract

With the growing interactions between China and Sri Lanka, the Sri Lankan government has placed increasing emphasis on Chinese language education, leading to a significant recruitment of high school Chinese language teachers. This study investigates the occupational motivation and job satisfaction of in-service Chinese language teachers in Sri Lankan high schools. A total of 120 teachers who participated in a seminar were surveyed, among whom 72 valid responses were collected. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, the study combined quantitative and qualitative analyses. Quantitative data, obtained through questionnaires, were analyzed using descriptive statistics to identify frequencies and percentages, while qualitative data were examined through coding and thematic analysis. The results indicate that most teachers entered the profession voluntarily and expressed overall satisfaction with their jobs, though a considerable number reported an intention to change careers. Stability of employment benefits was identified as a major factor in career choice. Among teachers fully committed to teaching, fewer than half expressed genuine passion for the profession. Based on these findings, the study recommends offering professional training and development opportunities, raising salaries, and enhancing societal recognition of teachers to improve motivation and job satisfaction.

Abstract

This study examines how local mainstream media in China construct “warm power” through localized international communication practices, taking Guangxi’s Thailand-oriented communication as the primary case, with Yunnan’s Myanmar-oriented practices as a comparative reference. Against the backdrop of deepening China–ASEAN relations and the limitations of traditional soft power in the social media era, the study adopts a qualitative case-based design integrating document analysis, qualitative content analysis, and comparative interpretation. The findings reveal that Guangxi’s international communication has evolved from fragmented media operations toward a coordinated warm power ecosystem characterized by strategic hub coordination, platform-based audience segmentation, culturally localized narratives, and sustained affective interaction. Through Thai-localized storytelling, people-centered everyday narratives, and integrated online–offline engagement, Guangxi’s media practices have shifted the logic of influence from symbolic image display to relationship-oriented communication, fostering emotional resonance, trust, and early forms of cross-cultural affective communities. Comparative observations from Yunnan further demonstrate that cultural proximity, audience segmentation, and “warm interaction” are key enabling conditions for warm power diffusion in Southeast Asia. Theoretically, this study advances the concept of warm power as a form of relational influence grounded in affective connectivity and sustained interaction, enriching international communication theory with a regionally embedded perspective. Practically, it highlights the unique role of local media as affective interfaces in China’s international communication system and offers insights for enhancing people-to-people connectivity and cross-cultural understanding in the ASEAN context.

Abstract

The integration of multimodal elements in contemporary writing practices has transformed the way sensory experiences are conveyed and internalized by audiences. This study illuminates the mechanisms through which composite writing shapes the sensory experience of taste, with a particular emphasis on the perception of spiciness. By examining composite writings from various media platforms, we uncover the intricate relationship between media representation and sensory perception. Our theoretical framework is anchored in the concepts of synesthesia, metaphor theory, and media studies, particularly the influential ideas of Marshall McLuhan on media extensions and human experience. The study lies in its exploration of how composite writing not only reflects but also shapes the audience's sensory experiences. We argue that the metaphorical use of spiciness in composite writing extends beyond the gustatory to encompass cultural and personal identities, challenging traditional hierarchies of sensory experience in aesthetic discourse.

Abstract

This study aims to incorporate Chinese culture teaching into Brazzaville high schools' curriculum to enhance China-Congo bilateral relations. Despite progress in Chinese language education there, Chinese culture education has clear shortcomings. Qualitative and exploratory methods were used. Data was collected via interviews with school personnel, student questionnaires, and classroom observations, along with in-depth case analyses of institutions with cultural initiatives. The findings revealed significant challenges: insufficient teacher training in cultural education, a lack of teaching resources, and limited access for students to Chinese culture. However, practical activities like embroidery workshops, kung-fu demonstrations, and costume exhibitions had great effects. They boosted students' interest and deepened their cultural understanding. Integrating such activities into the curriculum is crucial for a more engaging learning experience. Strategic planning, including building a fitting integration framework and providing teacher training, is needed. Based on the results, suggestions for administrators and policymakers were given, stressing more investment in teacher training and resources, and promoting cooperation with Chinese institutions. Future research can assess long-term impacts and explore exchange opportunities. This study endeavors to offer practical strategies to improve Chinese culture teaching quality in Brazzaville high schools.

Abstract

Traditional historical sources generally hold that system of penal nomenclature originated from convict labor types. With gender distinctions in Qin-Han penal nomenclature, this implies a corresponding clear gender-based labor division—for example, chengdan (wall-builder)/chong (grain-pounder) and guixin (gatherer of fuel for the spirits)/baican (white-rice sorter) were assigned different tasks—though traditional texts lack explicit details on lichen (male convict servants) and liqie (female convict servants) specific duties. The Shuihudi Qin bamboo manuscripts partially revealed these convicts’ actual work, showing their labor scope was less restricted than traditionally depicted, not limited solely by penal status. In the past decade, Liye Qin “tubu” (convict labor registers) have further clarified convict labor and its organization: scholarly studies indicate no significant labor intensity differences among lichen/liqie, guixin/baican, and chengdan/chong, with diverse work and common male-female co-labor, though some tasks were gender-exclusive (an understanding subject to new material releases). In summary, while traditional sources emphasize distinct gender-based labor division and “inner-outer” separation for convicts, Liye’s excavated materials—especially tubu—demonstrate gender did not significantly differentiate convict labor, partially challenging the traditional rigid “inner-outer” labor barrier.
