Abstract

Background: Patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) undergoing hemodialysis at Arifin Achmad General Hospital in Pekanbaru often experience sleep disturbances and anxiety that require nonpharmacological interventions. One therapy that can be used is the Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique (SEFT). Objective: to analyze nursing care and evaluate the application of SEFT therapy in improving sleep quality and reducing anxiety in CKD patients. Methods: This study used a single-subject case study design (Mrs. W). The instruments used included an observation sheet, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, and the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). The SEFT intervention was conducted outside of the hemodialysis schedule on December 9 and 10, 2025, for 15–30 minutes per session. Results:  The results showed an improvement in sleep quality and a reduction in anxiety after two interventions, with an average sleep quality score of 1.5 and an anxiety score of 2. Conclusion:  SEFT therapy can be considered as a nonpharmacological nursing intervention to help improve sleep quality and reduce anxiety in patients with CKD.

Abstract

Background: The role of head nurse has an important role in determining the quality of nursing services, one of which is the performance of nurses in carrying out nursing documentation. Good documentation is not only an improvement, but is important for the continuity of care, patient safety, and communication between health professionals. Objective: This study aims to determine nurses' perceptions of the head nurse's leadership style with nurse performance in nursing documentation. Method: This study is an analytical survey study with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 46 respondents who are team leaders and nurses with a total sampling method. Data were collected using questionnaires and observation sheets. Results: Based on the results of the study, 37 respondents (80.4%) stated that the head nurse’ leadership style was democratic and 9 respondents (19.6%) stated that the head nurse’ leadership style was authoritarian. A total of 30 respondents (65.2%) did incomplete dormitory documentation and only 16 respondents (34.8%) did complete documentation. The results of the chi-square test showed a relationship between leadership style and nurse performance in nursing documentation with a p-value = 0.001. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the head nurse’ leadership style and nurses' performance in documenting nursing care in inpatient wards. Head nurses need to implement an appropriate leadership style to improve nurses' performance, particularly in documenting patient care, from assessment to evaluation. This can enhance mutual care and minimize service errors.

Abstract

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health issue with high incidence rates in Indonesia, including West Java Province. Patients with pulmonary TB often experience abnormal breathing patterns that lead to decreased oxygen saturation. Non-pharmacological interventions are needed as complementary therapies to help improve respiratory function. The balloon-blowing breathing relaxation technique is a breathing exercise aimed at improving lung expansion and gas exchange efficiency through the mechanism of positive expiratory pressure. Objective: To describe the application of the balloon-blowing breathing relaxation technique as a nursing intervention to improve oxygen saturation in patients with pulmonary TB. Methods: A descriptive approach using the case report method, covering the nursing care process from assessment to evaluation. The study subject was Mr. J (70 years old) with a medical diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis in the Lavender Ward of X General Hospital. The intervention was administered once daily for 15 minutes over three consecutive days. Oxygen saturation measurements were taken using a pulse oximeter before and after the intervention. Results: There was a gradual increase in oxygen saturation from 93% on the first day to 98% on the third day following the intervention. The patient also reported a reduction in shortness of breath and appeared more relaxed. The nursing problem of ineffective breathing pattern was resolved after three days of intervention. Conclusion: The balloon-blowing breathing relaxation technique proved effective as a self-care nursing intervention in improving oxygen saturation in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. This intervention can be recommended as a complementary therapy in clinical nursing practice to support improvements in patients’ oxygenation status.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic syndrome characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired insulin secretion or function. Long-term uncontrolled blood glucose levels carry a risk of triggering microvascular complications such as diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN), which is characterized by nerve damage and reduced sensitivity. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between hyperglycemia status and the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy in Type 2 DM patients at the outpatient unit of RSIJ Cempaka Putih. Methods: A descriptive correlational study design with a cross-sectional approach was used. The study population consisted of all Type 2 DM patients at the RSIJ Cempaka Putih Outpatient Unit, with a sample size of 94 respondents selected via purposive sampling. The research instruments included medical record review for blood glucose levels and the 10-g monofilament test for neuropathy detection. Results: The majority of respondents were male (51.1%), with an average age of 58.73 years, and had had DM for >5 years (56.4%). A total of 53.2% of respondents were in a state of hyperglycemia ( mg/dL) and 70.2% of respondents had peripheral neuropathy. Chi-square test results showed a statistically significant association between hyperglycemia status and the occurrence of peripheral neuropathy, with a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant association between hyperglycemia and the development of peripheral neuropathy. These findings suggest that unstable blood glucose levels are a major determinant of nerve damage in patients with diabetes, underscoring the need for improved glycemic management and foot care education to prevent further complications.
