Rolling Journal is a peer-reviewed academic journal and also open to submissions and responses from any academy who concentrate in media and culture issues. We take seriously the need to move ideas outward, so that our cultural debates may have some resonance with wider political and cultural interests. Each issue is organised around a one word theme and is edited by one or two guest editors with a particular interest in that theme. Rolling Journal provides a forum for the presentation of research and discussion concerning the media within their political, economic, cultural and historical contexts. The journal is interdisciplinary, regularly engaging with a wider range of issues in cultural and social analysis. Its focus is on substantive topics and on critique and innovation in theory and method.

Abstract

In 2003, the competition event began its existence on Indonesian television. Singing competition event is one of the programs compete on Indonesian television until 2018. The television programs has an intense competition are Indonesian Idol Junior 2018 which broadcast on RCTI and The Voice Kids Indonesia 2018 which broadcast on GTV. Both of the programs show their best, especially in the artistic arrangement. Hence, the study will discuss the artistic elements in both of the singing competition programs and try to find out the similarities and differences of the artistic and aesthetic elements through the artistic arrangement. This comparative research uses qualitative descriptive methods to get the deepest and the meaningful data. The data collection includes observation by watching videos. This study aims to find out the kind of the similarities and differences of the elements in artistic order, include the stage setting, decoration, lighting, wardrobe, makeup and the aesthetics of Indonesian Idol Junior 2018 and The Voice Kids Indonesia 2018. Then, Jakob Sumardjo explains that aesthetic contains of 5 elements, these are object, subject, economy, politic or social institution, and context.The study results that both of the programs show many similarities and differences between all elements in the artistic used.

Abstract

The widespread use of social media has also affected the business aspects of creative industries such as film production and marketing. This happens because social media is used as an open public discussion space and brings together social media users with customers and potential customers of creative industry businesses. The film industry is a field that requires special strategies in the promotion process due to its dynamic nature and its competitive scheme that changes every week. This makes pre-consumption opinions made by social media users important as it can affect the sales performance of the released film. This study uses uses and gratification theory to discover how social media users use digital spaces to get satisfaction. This study separates individual engagement and interactive engagement as two important things that determine customer satisfaction in using social media and how it influences the pre-consumption opinions that circulate. This study is also useful for academics who have a focus of study on media studies, communication, business, as well as actors in the creative industry to determine promotional strategies from the time of film release until the product gets its gross profit.

Abstract

AbstrakDiskriminasi ras yang akhir-akhir ini mulai muncul lagi yang bermula dari politik yang memisahkan identitas di era kolonial Belanda. Etnis Tionghoa di Indonesia selalu dianggap pendatang dan sering menjadi kambing hitam dalam masalah social yang ada. Dokumenter dengan gaya pemaparan partisipatory menunjukkan sejarah dan sudut pandang lain mengenai etnis Tionghoa yang sudah turun temurun hidup di Indonesia selama ratusan tahun dan juga telah menjadi bagian dari warga negara Indonesia. Interaksi dalam dokumenter partisipatory diungkapkan langsung oleh subyek film dapat menunjukkan narasi yang jelas dan emosi yang jujur dari subyek sehingga memberikan kesaksian yang meyakinkan bagi penontonnya. Dokumenter Potret Pecinan Surabaya menunjukan sejarah dan realita etnis Tionghoa yang ada di Surabaya melalui gaya pemaparan partisipatory yang memberikan perspektif berbeda. Kata Kunci : dokumenter, partisipatory, etnis Tionghoa AbstractRacial discrimination that lately arise were start out by identity separating politics in the Dutch colonial era. Chinese ethnics in Indonesia are always considered as an immigrants and often become scapegoats in social problems. Documentaries with participatory exposure shows history and other perspectives on Chinese ethnicity that have been hereditary for hundreds of years become part of Indonesian citizens. Interaction in participatory documentaries revealed by the subject of the film, it can shows clear narratives and honest emotions in order to give a convincing testimony to the audience. Potret Pecinan Surabaya documentary shows the history and reality of Chinese ethnicity in Surabaya through participatory exposure that offer a different perspective. Abstract

Penelitian ini membahas tentang teori estetik bobot A.A.M Djelantik untuk menemukan unsur-unsur keindahan dalam film dokumenter Eksotika Meru Betiri di tinjau dari aspek sinematografi. Tujuan penelitian dilakukan adalah untuk mendeskripsikan unsur-unsur keindahan dalam film dokumenter Eksotika Meru Betiri dan mengetahui peranan sinematografi dalam mempertegas nilai estetik bobot, yaitu : suasana, gagasan, dan anjuran yang terkandung. Penelitian ini menggunakan jenis penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode deskriptif. Berdasarkan penelitian yang dilakukan terdapat nilai-nilai keindahan pada film dokumenter Eksotika Meru Betiri, yaitu nilai keindahan alam, keindahan moral, keindahan susila, dan keindahan akal. Aspek-aspek sinematografi yang digunakan adalah berfokus pada aspek framing, yaitu hubungan kamera dengan objek seperti batasan wilayah gambar, jarak, ketinggian dan pergerakan kamera.

Abstract

The Chef film is a Hollywood comedy drama, telling of Carl Casper's career as a chef. This study aims to analyze the editing aspects, especially the application of continuity cutting in supporting the narrative elements in Chef film using qualitative research methods, observation, documentation, library study and interactive model data analysis. The research found that some scenes that apply continuity cutting techniques such as 180º rule, shot/reverse shot, eyeline match, establishing/reestablishing shot, match on action, point of view cutting, crosscutting, Montage sequences, and cut-ins, can support the narrative element in the film Chef, because the storytelling on the movie Chef that is mutually sustainable can be delivered well to the audience.

Abstract

Encret adalah sebuah film fiksi diangkat dari kegelisahan pengkarya terhadap permasalahan sanitasi yang ada di Indonesia. Pengkarya mengemas menggunakan genre komedi pahit dengan konsep segitiga humor menurut Wilson D. M. Konsep segita humor menyajikan tawa pahit di atas kelucuan, yang muncul di tengah pahitnya kehidupan dikarenakan ketidakberdayaan dan ketertindasan seseorang atau suatu kelompok masyarakat. Film Encret memberikan kedekatan informasi tentang kondisi sosial, serta memberi tontonan yang menghibur, edukatif, dan komunikatif.

Abstract

In this era of globalization and digital as now this is one of the media that is still very interested in society is the film. Oneof the films that is still in demand either by adults or children is the animated film, one of which is Coco's animation. A nicemovie built on a plot that is not boring and more interesting if there is a twist plot element in it. Filmmaking takes a specialshooting technique or cinematography to have continuity and can be understood by film connoisseurs. The researchmethods used are qualitative descriptive. Researchers focused on the cinematography approach that would be applied toCoco's animated film with a duration of 109 minutes. The results of this study suggest that cinematography in particularframing (angle, type of shot, movement of the camera) in the sixth twist plot scene can support a twist plot. Not all have adefinite pattern in its use. Not all plot twist are built with camera movements, but are always supported with angle and typeof shot. The use of eye level in the animated film Coco proved to be able to support a plot twist. This is because the eye levelis capable of placing the audience as if it were among the characters in the animated film Coco. The Medium shot used inthe six scenes can support a plot twist in the animated film Coco because it is able to give curiosity, anxiety and surprise tothe audience through dialogue.

Abstract

ABSTRAK Film India merupakan salah satu film dengan artistik terbaik dengan menampilkan emosi cerita bedasarkan warna didalamnya, oleh karena itu warna sangatlah penting untuk memperoleh mood atau emosi cerita yang kuat. Hal tersebutlah yang menjadi landasan penelitian ini dengan objek kajian Film Padmaavat. Masalah dari penelitian yaitu bagaimana komposisi color pallete pada elemen artistik dan pengaruh elemen artistik pada penggambaran emosi cerita dalam film Padmaavat. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui komposisi color pallete pada elemen cerita dan mengetahui pengaruh emosi cerita dalam film Padmaavat. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dan pendekatan teori warna dan teori emosi. Teknik pengumpulan data yang dilakukan dalam penelitian ini adalah observasi dengan menonton film Padmaavat berulang kali hingga mendapatkan hasil sesuai dengan rumusan masalah, studi pustaka dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian ini diharapkan mampu mengungkap bagaimana komposisi color pallete pada elemen artistik dan pengaruh artistik untuk penggambaran emosi cerita dalam film Padmaavat. Penelitian ini menghasilkan 2 pembahasan diantaranya komposisi color pallete pada elemen artistik dan emosi cerita dalam film Padmaavat.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal and determine the role of cinematic elements contained in found footage genre films. The formation of the found footage genre contained in the film, seen from the aspects of mise en scene (setting, lighting, makeup and costumes as well as players and movements), cinematography, sound and editing. The research method used is a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach. The object of research chosen was the Sacred (2009) by director Monty Tiwa. Data in the study were obtained from observation, literature studies and documentation about films. The theory used in analyzing cinematic elements is the theory of cinematic elements by Himawan Pratista based on the theory of found footage by Alexandra Heller and Nicholas. The results of this study showed that 22 scenes were selected as objects identifying cinematic elements in forming the found footage genre. In this film, cinematic elements play an important role in supporting the packaging of found footage horror genre films so that they can build audience confidence in reality and suspense through mise en scene, cinematography, sound and editing. Acting players and subjective cameras with long-duration handheld camera techniques on films, giving greater influence to the realistic impression of found footage genre films. Abstract

Bhâko portrayed the difficulty of tobacco peasant in Jember. The editor took editing as a major theory which using continuity editing. This technique was used to visualize the habit and conflict of tobacco farmer in Jember that the audience could feel those situations. Moreover, The editor applied several aspects of continuity editing such as 180-degree rules, shot/reverse shot, eyeline match, establish, match on action, point of view, cut-in, crosscutting, and montage sequence. In addition, match on look and match on dialogue were used as supporting techniques. Bhâko uses multiple plot lines. Thus, continuity techniques are suitable for editing each situation and atmosphere, also control the mood in each scene.
